Researchers Think Megastructures Can Help Seed Life Throughout the Galaxy – VICE

When you hear the word "conservation" you might think about newt-counting or anti-fracking actions. What you probably dont think about is blowing up Jupiter and using its raw materials to build a megastructure enveloping the Sun.

But this is exactly the idea suggested by the ingenious astrophysicist Freeman Dyson back in 1960. He suggested that we could construct a swarm of solar panels enclosing our sun, capturing all its energy. Dyson reasoned that as humans use more and more energy, eventually we are going to outrun what can be captured on Earth alone. Only by expanding the energy metabolism of our civilization beyond our planet could we avoid catastrophic resource exhaustion.

Nowadays, scientists dont think this would require demolishing Jupiter. Anders Sandberg, senior researcher at Oxford Universitys Future of Humanity Institute, explains that it turns out making a sphere from thin metal foil made out of asteroids is way easier. One benefit is that we dont need to disassemble planets, he explains over Skype.

Fortunately, it also turns out that there are more than enough asteroids in the Solar System to make that much foil.

Sandberg explains that such ambitious projects would ultimately provide ways to maintain things we value. If we value biology and biodiversity, then we should preserve it from losses, whether caused by mass extinctions or human stupidity," Sandberg said. But this also means encouraging growth. If biodiversity is good, then we want more of it, and for ecosystems to stick around longer. To this end, Sandberg refers to ideas like Dysons as space gardening. Because, in short, they would grant the ability to cultivate life beyond Earth and spread it throughout the Solar System.

Sandbergs plan for gardening space is new, but the idea that humanity should harness more of the sun to increase the amount of living things is an old one. In 1900, the Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla decided that the greatest problem of science is increasing the total energy flowing through human civilization. Because, he thought, with more energy, we could banish scarcity and live fuller lives.

Tesla didnt propose exactly how to solve this, but he knew what the solution would roughly look like. It will, he said, ultimately involve increasing the amount of the suns energy we can put to use. Because, he figured, almost all complex and valuable thingsfrom ecosystems to sentient brainsrun on solar power. Civilization is just like a big plant: consuming sunlight in the indirect form of crops or coal.

A few years before Tesla, a self-taught genius living in a modest shack in rural Russia had already considered the same problem. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, who helped invent the rocket, did the math and estimated that our biosphere intercepts only about 4x10-10 of the suns total output. All the rest is squandered, pumped into frozen space. Thats a lot of waste.

Tsiolkovsky proposed a bold solution. He suggested that, in the far future, humans might rearrange the entire Solar System. At first, we could string together "necklaces of asteroids" into sun-girdling halos that could harvest more outgoing light. Later, we could reshape the mass of the planetsinto "cubes, discs, rings"for the same purpose. Then we could harness almost all the Sun.

Tsiolkovsky wanted to do this primarily because he wanted to spread life through the Solar System. At the moment, biology is stuck on one fragile planet. His motivations were, at heart, green: he thought a Solar System with more ecology was better than the current one which is almost entirely barren. Why not turn void and desert into a garden?

In ensuing decades, other scientistslike Vladimir Vernadskywarned that the only way for humanity to ultimately avoid resource depletion would be to wean ourselves off meat and oil and somehow come to feed off the sun directly. This would phase out the inefficiency and immorality of more indirect methods, such as fossil fuels or food chains, they insisted.

Dyson, writing during the 1960s, was driven by similar motivations. Of course, some people didnt like his suggestion of urbanizing a star. One suspicious journalist at the time complained that Dysons spheres would turn stars into traffic lights. But Dyson himself conceived of them as living systems, or artificial biospheres," not industrial disruptions. He said that bringing the Solar System to life in this way would be the stepping stone towards spreading biology to other stars and ultimately greening the galaxy.

But what about plans for space gardening today? Going through a menu of plausible options, Sandberg points first to what he calls biosphere life extension. Our planets biosphere is resilient, but not immortal: in around a billion years our planet will become uninhabitable by natural causes like the expansion of our sun. However, Sandberg and his colleague Karim Jebari, of Swedens Institute for Future Studies, argue that putting solar shields into orbit could protect the biosphere from being scorched as the sun ages. This could prolong the existence of life on our planet for at least another billion years, Sandberg tells me.

Of course, many people in environmental ethics would say, Wait a minute, this stuff is very extreme: theres a lot of hubris involved in trying to control the climate. But we are already messing with the climate of the planet, so we are already altering it regardless," he said.

Say you are an ecocentrist, or someone who cares about ecosystems (including Earth as a whole) beyond any use or value for humans. Even for the staunchest ecocentrist, the potential for using technology to extend the entire biospheres lifespan provides a great reason to keep humans around rather than hoping they go extinct, because they actually are the only species around that can handle the solar radiation and keep ecosystems alive longer term," says Sandberg.

So "gardening" could involve extending the lifespan of Earth. But what about extending life beyond Earth? A first step would be creating conditions for life to persist in space environments on its own, Sandberg explains. He imagines space stations with hydroponic gardens mining asteroids to build more space stations with hydroponic gardens, and this form of habitat filling up the Solar System.

This would be a revolution in the history of life. Life would now actually have the vacuum of space as an ecological niche. Someone could object that there is an awful lot of steel and plastic, compared to flowers, in that vision, he admits. But it is really just some asteroid material getting turned into protective habitats for life. Thats a form of space gardening.

We can think of grander visions. Since Gerard ONeil, scientists have imagined larger space habitats, housing whole ecosystems. Not just trays of hydroponic plants, but actual functioning forests," says Sandberg.

Fully engineered environments like these would allow not just for copies of ecosystems on Earth but experimenting with alternate ones. Indeed, rather than focusing on making other planets Earth-likeor terraforming themSandberg suggests it might make more sense to simply make other planets amenable to biology without necessarily having humans deciding whats there.

Finally, theres the really radical proposals. How about life that thrives within the vacuum of space?

Dyson once spoke about genetically engineering plants capable of living on comets, without atmosphere. Sandberg said that he is skeptical of this idea, but if anyone did manage it, there might be no stopping it.

They would be bound to spread to other Solar Systems in the really long run. And, at that point, theres of course going to be a greening of the galaxyregardless of whether we are planning it or not," he said.

How long might greening the entire galaxy take? If the spores are left to drift and spread passively by their own accord, this could take around two billion years, which is a bit slow by human standards. But, on the standard of the galaxy itself, thats only around about 8 galactic rotations; thats not an enormous amount of time to go from a galaxy that doesnt have life in lots of corners to one that does," he added.

But it's also possible that intelligent life might intervene and help speed up this greening process. This could take as little as 100,000 years. If that happens, then we could be poised for a "phase transition" between a mostly dead and a mostly living Milky Way. Indeed, Sandberg and others are skeptical that our galaxy is already green or has been greened by anyone else.

Given that we may potentially have the technology to send out spores in a few decades, we had better decide on the ethics of doing so soon, because people may try regardless of if a framework exists or not. We might, say, want to throw in a bit of intelligence and designso its more of a garden than a wilderness red in tooth and clawor it might be that we decide to let evolution take its course, Sandberg muses.

Of course, building sun-sapping spheres and seeding the galactic volume might seem ambitious. But, ultimately, if we want to safeguard a future for ecosystems within the universe in the longer term, then it might just be that gardening space and farming the stars is the only genuinely conservationist route.

Switzerland extends life of CV90s – Jane’s

25 November 2020

by Nicholas Fiorenza

Armasuisse, the Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement, has awarded a contract to BAE Systems Hgglunds (BSH) for the life extension of the Swiss Armys 186 CV9030s, which Switzerland designates as the Schtzenpanzer (Infantry Fighting Vehicle, IFV) 2000, BSH announced in a news release on 18 November. The life extension aims to keep the IFV in service until 2040.

Armasuisse has awarded a contract to BSH for the life extension of the Swiss Armys 186 Schtzenpanzer 2000 IFVs. (DDPS)

BSH said the life-extension programme would modernise the Schtzenpanzer 2000s optical, electrical, and electronic components and include the installation of active damping technology to reduce wear and tear and through-life repair costs, as well as increase the IFVs cross-country speed and comfort.

The Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) said on its website that the vehicles chassis would be reinforced and the following components would be replaced: computer systems and displays, vehicle information systems, the camera system, infrared camera, and electricity generator. The life-extension programme would not increase the Schtzenpanzer 2000s capabilities, according to the DDPS, but the vehicles will be fitted with a 360 surveillance system, which BSH said would increase the vehicles situational awareness, combat effectiveness, and survivability by allowing safer route planning and quicker targeting. Installation of a new electronics architecture would support the adaptation of the IFV to future developments in technology, the company added.

Textile companies are increasingly adopting cold plasma technique in an effort to deliver improved textile finishing.

Cold Plasma Technology Soon to Transform Wound Treatment Space

While cold plasma applications in sterilization and disinfection are currently accounting for maximum revenue in the cold plasma market, rapidly emerging applications in wound healing and adhesion will reportedly create lucrative opportunities for stakeholders.

Coldplasmatech GmbH, a German company, is looking forward to introduce a novel CP technology that could potentially revolutionize the wound care treatment platform, especially in emergency rooms in hospitals. The CP technology involves a patch of cold plasma made of silicone (as a part of the wound dressing), which can be used in treatment of chronic wound infections with the help of UV radiations and ions. This technology is presumed to provide a high-tech, efficient alternative to antibiotics, considering its ability to accelerate the wound healing process. If the trials based on the application of the cold plasma technology in faster wound healing deliver convincing and viable results, industry experts predict that the CP technology could become a widespread method for treatment of chronic wounds and infection, in near future.

Flight Tests to Show B61-12 Will Work on Air Force’s Newest Fighter Jet – I-Connect007

A mock B61-12s strike in the dusty Nevada desert successfully completed the first in a series of flight tests with the U.S. Air Forces newest fighter jet, demonstrating the bombs first release from an internal bomb bay at greater than the speed of sound.

The flight test of the B61-12 with theF-35A Lightning IIthis summer was the first ever at Sandia National Laboratories Tonopah Test Range featuring the fighter jet. It was also the first of a testing series that will conclude with full-weapon systems demonstrations designed to increase confidence the bomb will always work when needed and never under any other circumstances.

Were showing the B61-12s larger compatibility and broader versatility for the countrys nuclear deterrent, and were doing it in the world of COVID-19, said Steven Samuels, a manager with Sandias B61-12 Systems Team. Were not slowing down. Were still moving forward with the B61-12 compatibility activities on different platforms.

In partnership with the National Nuclear Security Administration, Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Air Force, Sandia completed a B61-12full-weapon system demonstrationwith theF-15E Strike Eaglefighter jet in March, and another in July with the Air ForcesB-2 Spiritbomber.

Sandia is the design and engineering lab for non-nuclear components of the nations nuclear stockpile, including the B61-12. In addition to non-nuclear component development, Sandia serves as the technical integrator for the complete weapon, assuring the system meets requirements as a full-weapon system.

Showing the bombs real-world capabilityDuring the Aug. 25 flight test, an F-35A flying faster than the speed of sound dropped a B61-12 containing non-nuclear and mock nuclear components from about 10,500 feet above Tonopah Test Range. The inert B61-12 struck the desert floor in the designated target area about 42 seconds later.

We successfully executed this historic, first-ever F-35A flight test at Tonopah Test Range within the specified delivery criteria, said Brian Adkins, range manager at TTR.

The success of this test, as with all other weapons evaluations, is only possible through the detailed planning, combined with full collaboration between TTR and the program engineers, and the execution of the test evolution by the field operators and recovery specialists in the combined team of Sandia and TTRs operations and maintenance subcontractor, Navarro Research and Engineering, he said. With the multiple phases and operational activities a test involves, the team at TTR is diligent to integrate safety and security into all segments to ensure proper precautions are implemented for mission success.

Coordination between Sandia, Los Alamos, the NNSA and the Air Force made the flight test possible, and initial data shows that all systems and interfaces between the refurbished bomb and the F-35A worked as expected.

Unlike previous fighter jets, the F-35A carries the bomb internally. The recent flight test was the first demonstration of a fully instrumented B61-12 release from an internal bomb bay on a fighter and the first such release at speeds of Mach 1 or greater, Samuels said.

This was the first test to exercise all systems, including mechanical, electrical, communication and release between the B61-12 and the F-35A, he said.

The test also came amidst now commonplace COVID-19 workplace restrictions, which can make planning more difficult but are not slowing down Sandias important mission work, said B61-12 program senior manager Christine Mitchell. Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Laboratory, NNSA and our Air Force partners are working diligently to ensure F-35A major milestones stay on track, despite the challenges presented by COVID-19.

The F-35A is a fifth generation fighter and is described by an Air Forceonline fact sheetas an agile, versatile, high-performance, 9-G capable multirole fighter with stealth technology and advanced sensors. Nine countries the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Netherlands, Turkey, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Australia were involved in the fighter jets development.

The latest test is a critical piece in the F-35A and B61-12 program, Samuels said. Aboard the newest fighter, the B61-12 provides a strong piece of the overall nuclear deterrence strategy for our country and our allies.

Sandia design and engineering is integral to B61-12 Life Extension ProgramThe compatibility testing is an essential part of theB61-12 Life Extension Programto refurbish, reuse or replace components, extend the bombs service life, and improve its safety, security and effectiveness.

A life extension program allows scientists and engineers to address the aging of nuclear weapons components. Some components are requalified and go back into a weapon without change; others that have aged are remanufactured using the original specifications; and sometimes the original technology is no longer available, so Sandia redesigns those parts using modern technology.

The first B61 entered service 50 years ago, and over the decades numerous modifications have been made to increase safety and reliability. The B61-12 consolidates and replaces most of the previous variants. The National Nuclear Security Administration recentlyannouncedplans to manufacture the first refurbished B61-12 in fiscal year 2022.

An F-35A Dropped An Inert B61-12 Nuclear Bomb During Supersonic Flight For The First Time – The Aviationist

An F-35A Lightning II opens its bomb bay doors and drops a mock B61-12 at Sandia National Laboratories Tonopah Test Range. (Screenshot from Sandia National Laboratories video)

Just a few months after the first photos of the F-35 testing the B61-12 nuclear bomb in 2019 for the F-35A Dual Capable Aircraft (DCA) program were released, the Sandia National Laboratories announced that the F-35 dropped for the first time an inert B61-12 nuclear bomb from its internal bomb bay during supersonic flight. According to the press release, the test took place on Aug. 25, 2020 at about 10,500 ft above the Tonopah Test Range, with the inert bomb hitting the target area after a 42 seconds-flight.

The test was the first performed by Sandia, the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the U.S. Air Force over the Tonopah Test Range with the F-35A and the first of a testing series that will conclude with full-weapon systems demonstrations designed to increase confidence the bomb will always work when needed and never under any other circumstances. Sandia oversees the design and engineering for the non-nuclear components of the United States nuclear stockpile, including the new B61-12, and of the integration of the complete weapon on the aircraft.

We successfully executed this historic, first-ever F-35A flight test at Tonopah Test Range within the specified delivery criteria, said Brian Adkins, range manager at TTR. The success of this test, as with all other weapons evaluations, is only possible through the detailed planning, combined with full collaboration between TTR and the program engineers, and the execution of the test evolution by the field operators and recovery specialists in the combined team of Sandia and TTRs operations and maintenance subcontractor, Navarro Research and Engineering. With the multiple phases and operational activities a test involves, the team at TTR is diligent to integrate safety and security into all segments to ensure proper precautions are implemented for mission success.

Earlier this year, the team completed a B61-12 full-weapon system demonstration with the F-15E Strike Eagle and the B-2A Spirit, completing the integration of the bomb aboard the two aircraft. Differently than the Strike Eagle, the F-35 transports its B61-12 internally, and according to Sandias previous press releases, it seems that the F-15E did not attempt a supersonic drop of the bomb, simply stating that the aircraft was flying near Mach 1 in at least two tests at 1000 ft and 25000 ft. Steven Samuels, a manager with Sandias B61-12 Systems Team, confirmed that the F-35 test was the first demonstration of a fully instrumented B61-12 release from an internal bomb bay on a fighter and the first such release at speeds of Mach 1 or greater.

The F-35A DCA, according to public information, should achieve the nuclear certification in January 2023, pretty much in line with earlier reports that scheduled the completion of the integration works between 2020 and 2022. Regarding the delivery of the new weapon, the B61-12 could be first delivered to the U.S. Air Force starting from 2022, after significant delays were caused by some faulty electrical components. Around 480 bombs will reportedly be upgraded to the new configuration.

As already explained in a previous article here at The Aviationist:

The B61-12 represent the latest LEP (Life-Extention Program) upgrade to the B61 line of nuclear weapons that has already been extensively tested with theF-15E Strike Eaglesof the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron, back in 2015.

The Life Extension Program or LEP, will replace the B61 -3, -4, -7, and -10 mods, with the -12 that, along with the B83, will become the only remaining gravity delivered nukes in the inventory.

The B61-12 gravity bomb ensures the current capability for the air-delivered leg of the U.S. strategic nuclear triad well into the future for both bombers and dual-capable aircraft supporting NATO, said Paul Waugh, AFNWCs Air-Delivered Capabilities director in a U.S. Air Forcerelease dated Apr. 13(more or less when the world learnedabout the first use of the famous MOAB in Afghanistan). The B61-12 will be compatible with the B-2A, B-21, F-15E, F-16C/D, F-16 MLU, F-35 and PA-200 aircraft.

The LEP increases the B61s accuracy so much that it will have the same capability against hardened targets as the much more powerful weapons it is replacing.

Here below you can find the video released by Sandia. After the bomb drop at the beginning of the video, you can also see, at about the 30 seconds mark, the spin rocket motors firing to improve stability during the bombs descent. If you cant see the embedded video below, heres the link to the declassified footage.

Traditional launch services may not suit the needs of the future Space Force – SpaceNews

The Space Forces launch enterprise is trying to gain better insight into the next wave of space innovation and figure out how the military could acquire those capabilities.

WASHINGTON SpaceX and United Launch Alliance were selected as U.S. national security launch providers based on their ability to deliver spacecraft to specific Earth orbits. How the Pentagon buys launch services in the future could change, however, as the military considers using emerging technologies and services known as space mobility and logistics.

Col. Robert Bongiovi, the director of the Space Forces launch enterprise, said his office is trying to gain better insight into the next wave of space innovation and figure out how the military could acquire those capabilities.

The Space and Missile Systems Center Launch Enterprise issued a request for information Nov. 10 asking companies to submit by Jan. 15 details on planned investments that would support space mobility and logistics.

Space tugs that move satellites to different orbits or within orbits, satellite refueling and servicing vehicles, and in-space manufacturing are some of the capabilities mentioned in the request for information as examples of the future space ecosystem.

These are all new space missions and capabilities that the military doesnt currently do. Bongiovi said last week at a Mitchell Institute event that the information submitted by the industry will help the Space Force decide on future investments in space access, mobility and logistics.

The Space Force in its vision document mentions space mobility and logistics as core competencies of the service.

Bongiovi said there are currently no plans to change the structure of the national security launch program, which relies on two launch providers to fly military and intelligence community satellites to multiple orbits. But he said the Space Force is doing market research that could inform the requirements for launch providers for the next national security space launch competition in 2024. Industry has a view of the future that is very expansive, he said.

We have to have honest conversations with industry on where theyre going and why, said Bongiovi. We also have to talk to our satellite providers and understand the demand.

Point-to-point transportation

One potential future use of space vehicles contemplated by the military is for cargo delivery on Earth. The U.S. Transportation Command, which is responsible for moving personnel and cargo around the world, is studying how space launch vehicles might be used to transport supplies and people in emergencies .

The idea has fascinated senior officials like Will Roper, assistant secretary for acquisitions for the Department of the Air Force. Using suborbital space vehicles for point-to-point delivery opens up intriguing possibilities, he told reporters Nov. 24.

My personal view, from what I see industry developing, is that logistics is a really interesting capability to rethink, he said. You can put mass quickly to the other side of the world. Special operations forces could be on the ground halfway around the world in minutes, said Roper.

Bongiovi seemed skeptical, however.

The Space Force launch enterprise, he said, supports studies on the use of space vehicles for cargo delivery. On whether this could actually be done, Bongiovi said, I dont think in the launch enterprise we have insight to answer this.

Launch companies will provide us the opportunity to take advantage of new uses for their systems, he said. I dont know that this is going to be one of them.

Lt. Gen. John Shaw, deputy commander of U.S. Space Command, suggested the military will wait and see how these technologies are employed in the private sector before it commits to fund programs.

Asked to explain how the military sees space mobility and logistics, Shaw said: Ive been intrigued by that concept for a long time.

I think we will watch it closely to see how effective it becomes on the commercial side, and in parallel see if we can introduce that into our architecture as a possible resilience measure or life extension measure, Shaw said Nov. 20 at an online event hosted by the Air Force Associations Schriever Chapter.

Shaw said the Space Force has to carefully analyze these options and figure out what parts of the space architecture benefit from that service.

Natural sleeping pills: What are they? – Medical News Today

A person who has difficulty falling or staying asleep may find that they benefit from using natural sleep aids, such as melatonin, to help them get the sleep they need.

This article will look at five natural sleeping aids and suggest when a person should see a doctor for sleep issues. It will also discuss some research that focuses on the effectiveness of natural sleeping pills.

People should be aware that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not regulate natural sleeping pills because they are supplements.

When a person is shopping for natural sleeping pills, they should check for third party testing and read the product labels carefully.

It is also important that they speak with a doctor before taking any supplements, especially if they have any underlying health conditions or are taking any prescription medications.

Below, we review five natural sleeping pills and discuss how they could benefit a person who is struggling to sleep.

Please note that the writer has not tested any of these products. All information is research-based.

Proponents of valerian root say that it may help relieve symptoms of anxiety and help people sleep.

Older research suggests that valerian root could be an effective sleep aid that people tolerate well. Indeed, a 2020 analysis of several studies also found it effective in the promotion of sleep.

People should remember that studies looking into the effects of valerian root are limited and conflicting, so further research is necessary to support their findings.

One valerian root-based supplement a person may want to try is Best Rest Formula, which contains a blend of valerian root, lemon balm, passionflower, and chamomile.

Best Rest Formula is available for purchase online.

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone in the human body. The hormone helps people relax and fall asleep.

The levels of melatonin in the body rise and fall naturally during the day and night. Because light blocks melatonin production, its levels are highest at night. However, if a person has exposure to light at night, it could block melatonin production.

A small 2016 study suggests that melatonin supplements are effective in helping improve the onset of sleep in people who work shifts.

However, a 2014 review suggests the opposite. That said, the reviewers do note a weak relationship between taking melatonin and a reduction in sleep disruption from jet lag.

As a result, people should be aware that studies investigating the effect of melatonin supplements on sleep are conflicting, and more research is necessary to fully understand how they work.

One melatonin supplement a person may want to try is Melaton-5 from Thorne. Thorne say that they test all their products at least four times as part of their quality control procedures.

Melaton-5 is available for purchase online.

Proponents of lavender suggest that it has relaxing and antianxiety properties.

One systematic review from 2019 concludes that lavender in either capsule or aromatherapy form not only helps people get to sleep but also provides some anxiety relief.

Another 2019 review found that when people took silexan lavender capsules in 160-milligram doses, they scored lower on an anxiety score questionnaire.

However, both reviews acknowledge that more studies are necessary to understand the effects of lavender when a person takes it in either capsule form or as an aroma.

One lavender supplement a person may want to try is the Be Grounded supplement from Happy Healthy Hippie. According to Happy Healthy Hippie, they use non-genetically modified organism (GMO) and vegan ingredients in their products.

Be Grounded is available for purchase online.

Magnesium is an essential nutrient responsible for various physiological functions within the body. Magnesium occurs naturally in some foods, while manufacturers add it to some others.

According to an older study, magnesium supplements may help with improving various aspects of sleep. The researchers identified significant increases in sleep time and quality.

Newer studies are also finding that magnesium supplementation is effective in helping relieve insomnia.

However, more studies are necessary to understand how magnesium supplements exert their effect on the body.

One magnesium supplement a person may want to try is magnesium+ by mindbodygreen. This supplement also contains jujube and pharmaGABA. According to mindbodygreen, they have state-of-the-art laboratories and conduct four rounds of testing.

magnesium+ is available for purchase online.

Glycine is an amino acid that may help people fall asleep.

According to one 2015 study, glycine improves sleep by helping modulate the circadian rhythm, which governs the sleep-wake cycle.

One glycine supplement a person may want to try is from Life Extension. Life Extension claim that this supplement is vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free.

Glycine is available for purchase online.

Adagio Therapeutics COVID-19 Antibody Demonstrates Best-in-Class Breadth and Potency Against a Range of Coronaviruses that Pose Human Threat |…

DetailsCategory: AntibodiesPublished on Thursday, 19 November 2020 14:46Hits: 632

-Lead antibody expected to advance to clinical studies for treatment and prevention of COVID-19 in early 2021-

WALTHAM, MA, USA I November 18, 2020 I Adagio Therapeutics, Inc., today pre-published in vitro and in vivo data demonstrating its lead antibody candidate, ADG2, shows similar or higher potency against SARS-CoV-2 compared to monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in clinical development, while also uniquely offering broad neutralization against a range of sarbecoviruses that pose a threat to humans. Adagio expects its half-life engineered version of ADG2, called ADG20, to enter clinical studies in early 2021. The manuscript summarizing the Adagio findings has been accepted for review by the journal Science and was made available on the bioRxiv.org pre-print server.

These studies demonstrate our lead antibody shows comparable or higher neutralization potency against SARS-CoV-2 than most leading antibodies currently in development for COVID-19, and yet maintains its ability to potently neutralize SARS-CoV and additional pre-emergent SARS-like coronaviruses currently circulating in bats, said Laura Walker, Ph.D., chief scientific officer of Adagio. All of the antibodies currently in clinical development trade-off breadth for potency. They either show broad activity against other sarbecoviruses but lack neutralization potency, or they show high neutralization potency against SARS-CoV-2 but lack activity against other coronaviruses. These data suggest that ADG20 holds the promise of being a broadly protective agent against SARS-CoV-2 as well as future SARS-like coronaviruses that are likely to emerge.

Data highlights:

Potency and breadth of coverage

Viral escape variants

Other enhanced attributes

As we look to the future, it is clear we will need potent treatment and prevention for not only COVID-19 but also for future coronaviruses, which we can now say with near certainty will continue to emerge, said Tillman Gerngross, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Adagio. Based on these data, we believe ADG20 has the potential to offer unsurpassed treatment and prevention for COVID-19 while serving as a potent and broadly protective countermeasure to protect against resistant strains of SARS-CoV-2 as well as future sarbecovirus threats. Importantly, we took our time to develop ADG20 without sacrificing duration of effect, manufacturability, and affordability. We look forward to advancing ADG20 into the clinic in 2021 to learn how it may provide protection from the greatest pandemic of our lifetime.

About Adagio Therapeutics

Family fight to make more memories with daughter after pandemic robs them of precious time – North Wales Live

The family of a 10-year-old girl fighting an inoperable brain tumour have told how the pandemic has robbed them of precious memories with their daughter.

But they say the generosity of donations are helping to prolong her life.

Paul Slapa and Carran Williams were given the devastating news on New Years Eve that their daughter, Eva, had diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG).

The tumour sits in the brain stem, making it impossible to remove.

The rare and aggressive disease only affects a small number of children each year, and as a result, little progress has been made to identify ways to treat children with the diagnosis.

The family, from Marford, Wrexham, were told the best thing to do was to go and make memories as a family.

But as the pandemic struck, not only were plans for family holidays and special days out restricted - clinical trials in the US were also put on hold.

Once they eventually reopened in July, the trials only began accepting US patients because of travel restrictions.

Evas dad, Paul, who works in finance, said: The diagnosis was hard enough.

But to then miss out on treatment and to be able to go places together and go on holiday is tough.

Youre just waiting around, and now that shes in a position where things are more difficult for her, we cant do these things anyway because shes unable to.

Were lucky to live in a rural area, but its not quite the same as doing the fun stuff.

Its those things that have been affected from a memories perspective.

Weve just missed out on this period of time, and that has been tough.

He told how Evas last scan in October revealed the tumour has progressed, meaning the ability to move her face and her balance has become worse.

There are no more treatment options in the UK - shes had her last radiotherapy in August which was just to stabilise things, Paul said.

Thats all finished now.

As a result, the family is desperate to continue raising money that will help fund private medication that is hoped will prolong Evas life until medication with a known positive effect becomes available.

After starting a fundraising campaign at the beginning of the year, they hit their initial 250,000 target.

But with ever-growing private medical costs and with the hope of finding more effective treatment, the target has now been increased to 500,000.

The worst scenario is that we get access to something, but then we cant afford to do it, Paul said.

Not having the money shouldnt be an issue - so thats why we carry on.

They are currently paying 12,000 every 12 weeks for a private German medication, which Eva has been taking since June.

They are also trying to access further medication in the hope of prolonging their daughters life at a cost of around 10,000 a month.

Its all cost that adds up because the NHS will not allow us to have them over here, which is frustrating, Paul added.

If we were to continue with the treatment over the next 12 months, were talking 160,000 euros - and that doesnt include European hospital care.

It means weve got to keep fundraising because those amounts of money are just astronomical.

Paul said they dont know if the medication is having a positive effect on Eva, but say they will continue with the treatment in the hope that it is.

The reality is there is no cure for DIPG, so life extension is your goal, he said.

We hope during that time as trials launch that something does prove to have an effect.

We have to act now because we dont know what the future holds.

Paul added: The NHS is brilliant in terms of free access to healthcare and thats fantastic - but where it doesnt work as well is when you have to pay thousands of pounds to access a drug because the NHS wont prescribe it because its not part of a trial.

My attitude is that if its potentially going to help a child whos ill to the point where they don't necessarily have that amount of time, then you should try these things.

Weve been really lucky that lots of people have supported us, but I know of other families who havent had that same success.

How is it fair that they then just dont get access to treatment?

It doesnt make sense to restrict a child from having a chance - its wrong.

But since the pandemic, Paul told how it has become very difficult to raise money with coronavirus restrictions in place.

We had all these ideas in the pipeline to hold events, but even thats been difficult because of the restrictions, so weve had to find different ways to do it.

Theres only so many times you can ask people to keep giving.

Locally so many incredible people have donated already, but how many times can you ask that same person to put their hand in their pocket for us?

Thats why Children in Need was fantastic because it raised awareness of Evas situation nationally.

He added: You have to try to remain focused on making things happen and moving forward, otherwise it all consumes you.

You dont think about the future, you just have to deal with the here and now.

A lot of people tell us were so strong, but what is the alternative? We cant be anything else because it doesnt help Eva.

In a bid to further raise the profile of Evas case, the family appeared on BBC's Children in Need last week, which highlighted Evas journey so far.

In an emotional video played to the nation, her parents told how she had lost the ability to smile which they said has been pretty tough.

Up until recently, shes coped well with the physical side of things, Paul said.

A lot of the frustration for Eva is the psychological side of it.

She sees the appearance change and it sparked a reaction after watching the Children in Need video.

There were pictures and videos running on the beach and pictures of her when she was younger smiling, and its that which knocked her.

She turned to Carran and said she wanted to be normal again.

Its that bit that really gets to you, because theres nothing you can do to help her.

NY Power Authority Announces First Milestone of Project to Extend Operating Life of New York’s Largest Power Plant – Automation.com

Summary

The New York Power Authority today announced the first milestone of its 15-year modernization and digitization program to significantly extend the operating life of its Niagara Power Project, the largest source of clean electricity in New York State and one of the country's largest hydroelectric projects.

The New York Power Authority today announced the first milestone of its15-year modernization and digitization program to significantly extend the operating life of its Niagara Power Project, the largest source of clean electricity in New York State and one of the country's largest hydroelectric projects. As part of the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plants life extension and modernization program, called "Next Generation Niagara," 13 turbine units in the project's main generating facility will be upgraded. An outage to allow for the overhaul of the first unit began recently and digitization and modernization work commenced earlier this month.

The digitization of the first hydroelectric generator at the Robert Moses Power Plant is significant because it will set the course for work on the remaining twelve units, said Gil C. Quiniones, NYPA president and CEO. We have been planning this work for many months, but as the old saying goes, this is where the rubber meets the road.

Next Generation Niagara was launched in July 2019. Next Gen improvements include replacing aging equipment with the latest machinery reflecting advanced digital technologies for optimizing the hydroelectric project's performance. The initiative encompasses four major phases. 1) A comprehensive inspection of the Robert Moses plant's penstocksthe 485 foot tubes that are 24 feet in diameter along the face of the project that carry water from the forebay to the turbine generators; 2) refurbishing the 630-ton crane that enables mechanical work on the turbines; 3) upgrading and digitizing control systems; and building a new back-up control room and 4) overhaul and/or replacement of mechanical components that have reached the end of their operating life.

This first major outage will allow for the installation of new digital controls on the first (one of 13) turbine generator unit and its connections to the control room and the plants substations. Panels in the control room corresponding to the turbine unit also will be digitized as part of the plants overall Control Room upgrade and redesign. The turbine unit outage aligns with another outage for work on NYPAs transmission life extension and modernization program taking place in the plants switchyard.

Thiswill allow new digital controls to be installed on the transformers and circuit breakers corresponding to the upgraded turbine. (This animation describes the digital connections between the generating unit, the control room and the substation). The work on this first unit is part of a design build contract NYPA trustees awarded to Burns and McDonnell earlier this year which includes subcontracts to Emerson and Ferguson Electric of Buffalo. The first-unit outage is expected to last approximately 7 months.

Following the collapse of Niagara Mohawk's Schoellkopf Power Station in 1956, and the elimination of tens of thousands of jobs in the Niagara region and nearly 25 percent of the city's tax base, the Federal Power Commission issued a license in 1957 to the New York Power Authority to redevelop Niagara Falls' hydroelectric power. The Power Authority employed 11,700 workers and within three years, 12 million cubic yards of rock were excavated. The herculean effort led to the construction of a massive main structure that is 1,840 feet long, 580 feet wide and 384 feet high. When the Niagara Power Project produced its first power in 1961, it was the largest hydropower facility in the Western world and President John F. Kennedy called it "an example to the world of North American efficiency and determination." After 60 years of operation and its obtaining a new 50-year federal operating license in 2007, the Niagara Power Project remains the crown jewel of New York's power infrastructure.

NYPA is the largest state public power organization in the nation, operating 16 generating facilities and more than 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines. More than 80 percent of the electricity NYPA produces is clean renewable hydropower. NYPA uses no tax money or state credit. It finances its operations through the sale of bonds and revenues earned in large part through sales of electricity.

Minot’s weather radar will be out of service for approximately one week for scheduled upgrades – Minot Daily News

Kim Fundingsland/MDNThis weather radar site that covers the Minot area will be out of service today until Friday, Nov. 20, for scheduled upgrades. The radar is located north of Granville.

GRANVILLE The radar the National Weather Service uses to provide informational coverage and help in compiling forecasts for Minot and the surrounding area is off-line today and will be until at least next Friday. The reason why is to allow for the installation of updated equipment.

The NWS, U.S. Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration have invested $150-million in a Service Life Extension Program for a network of 159 operational radars in the United States. The radar serving Minot, KMBX WSR-88D, is due for a generator replacement over the next seven days. The project will include fuels tanks and accompanying components.

When completed, the upgrade will support that radars operation during periods of commercial power outages which often occur during times of hazardous weather. The current upgrade is not the last on the schedule. Refurbishment of the pedestal that supports the radar and adjacent equipment shelters will complete the Service Life Extension Program. Those improvements are scheduled for completion in 2023.

Minots weather radar is viewed by many on cell phones, laptops and the like, especially during times of inclement weather such as rain or snow events. While Minots radar will be down during the current maintenance period, the NWS advises weather watchers to monitor adjacent radars at Bismarck, Mayville (Grand Forks), and Glasgow, Montana. The NWS Radar Operation Center is located in Norman, Oklahoma.

Inside The Navy’s Top Aggressor Squadron That Is About To Trade Its Hornets For Super Hornets – The Drive

One of the U.S. Navys dedicated adversary squadrons, VFC-12, the Fighting Omars, is about to get a massive increase in capability as it trades its Legacy F/A-18A+ and C/D model Hornets for early examples of the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The War Zone can exclusively reveal that the squadron is expected to make the transition by October 2021. It marks the latest phase in the Navys divestment of original F/A-18A-D variants of the Hornet and the Fighting Omars will be the first Navy aggressor squadron to be fully equipped with the type.

The inclusion of early-batch Super Hornets in VFC-12s adversary mission will alleviate the increasing burden of maintaining older Hornets, many of which have extremely high flight hours, plus it will add some notable enhancements to meet increasing demands for more robust bandit threat training. It follows news that the U.S. Air Force is to similarly enhance its aggressor capabilities by using early examples of the F-35A and younger F-16C/Ds to equip the 65th Aggressor Squadron.

Were hoping that the daily availability of the Super Hornets will make it easier for everyone on the squadron to keep their flight hours up, says VFC-12s Lieutenant Commander Ian Bro Hutter. The Super Hornet also carries more fuel, so it can stay airborne longer, which will also reduce the burden in terms of the actual number of sorties we have to fly, he adds.

VFC-12, which is home-based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia, and uses the radio callsign and nickname Ambush, looks set to receive some of the oldest Super Hornets previously in use by the fleet. These are examples that were originally assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 27 Royal Maces since 2004. This unit, assigned to Carrier Air Wing Five in Japan, swapped its original Block I F/A-18Es for new Block II examples.

Super Hornets will herald a welcome boost in the way the Fighting Omars fly their critical fleet support missions. Its not currently clear if the jets destined for VFC-12 will be modified under the Boeing Service Life Modernization life extension program, which you can read more about here.

U.S. Navy

VFC-12 received F/A-18Cs in recent years to replace its F/A-18A+ Hornets.

Transitioning VFC-12 to the Super Hornet is the latest in a succession of moves by the U.S. Navy to remove the 1980s-era Legacy Hornets from its inventory. It also reflects a need to evolve adversary technology and employ more advanced training techniques to meet growing threats abroad.

While the Marine Corps continues to operate the Hornet, original A-D models have all beenretired from the front line Navy units, and the Blue Angels flight demonstration team is also now receiving Super Hornets, as well. Along with VFC-12, the River Rattlers of VFA-204, the U.S. Naval Test Pilots School (TPS), and the Naval Fighter Weapons School, better known as Topgun, are the only remaining Navy units that still fly the Legacy Hornet.

Lieutenant Commander Hutter spoke to The War Zone while deployed for a month with VFC-12 to Naval Air Station Key West, in Florida, supporting unit-level work-ups for fleet Super Hornet squadrons under the Strike Fighter Advanced Readiness Program, known as SFARP. One of the Fighting Omars' main taskings is to provide high-end red air adversary threat presentations to fleet aviators in order to help them prepare for combat deployments.

SFARP typically involves two fleet squadrons coming here for two weeks. They then leave and another two new squadrons rotate in here, Hutter explains. SFARP is an initial phase in deployment work up preparations for Carrier Air Wing (CVW) strike fighter squadrons.

If you break down our level of priorities at VFC-12, the highest would be what we call core events, which are related to the Optimized Fleet Response Plan [OFRP]. This starts about a year before a carrier air wing deploys. The first step of this is SFARP, which is squadron-level tactics, and is what we primarily support, Hutter explains. Squadrons typically conduct these events at Key West for air-to-air SFARP, and NAS Fallon for air-to-surface phases. VFC-12 provides threat aircraft presentations to give the fleet pilots a credible adversary to contend with during these periods.

U.S. Navy/MCS2C Brian Morales

Super Hornets detached to Boca Chica Field, NAS Key West, during SFARP.

We also support COMPTUEX [Composite Training Unit Exercises] in the latter part of the work-up, right as the units get ready to deploy on the carrier as an air wing. This typically means we deploy to NAS Jacksonville, Florida, for the East Coast, or to NAS North Island, California, for the West Coast. So we have four main detachment locations for us. SFARP and COMPTUEX trump everything else if theres a requirement for us to support either of those, we will drop everything and go.

Next down the priority list is a relatively new mission known as Legacy Transition Training, or LTT. We started this last year, says Hutter, explaining how LTT is a training role the squadron picked up to convert existing aviators to fly the Legacy Hornet after the designated Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS), VFA-106, the Gladiators, ceased flying training for Hornets in October 2019. VFC-12 now supports the pilot and maintainer training requirement to supply the handful of units in the Navy that still operate the F/A-18A-D.

Its going to be relatively short-lived, because we are scheduled to be transition-complete to the Super Hornet this time next year [November 2021], says Hutter. LTT is for staff instructors going to fly the C/D at Topgun, at VFA-204, or at TPS. We do their training and last year we had over 50 people come through for the five hours of flying training to get the charlie qual.

The Omars also provide red air training for the Oceana-based units in what the squadron refers to as fleet support but Hutter acknowledges this third tier responsibility is, unfortunately, on an as-available basis due to the myriad of more pressing demands.

Jamie Hunter

VFC-12 provides "fleet support" for home-based training from NAS Oceana when schedules allow.

Like VFC-13, the Fighting Saints, at NAS Fallon, and VFC-111, the Sundowners, at NAS Key West, both of which fly the F-5N/F Tiger II, and aforementioned River Rattlers at Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, Louisiana, VFC-12 is part of the Tactical Support Wing (TSW), a wing belonging to the Naval Reserves. The U.S. Navy closed down its active-duty adversary squadrons in the mid-1990s, and in doing so (aside from Topgun instructors), it handed responsibility for red air over to the Reserves.

Hutter is the only Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) currently on staff at VFC-12 and, like most of the aircrew here, he is a highly experienced Topgun graduate. Everyone here is technically a full-time reservist. Our current Skipper is full-time support staff, we also have four full-time support department heads. As far as pilots go, the rest are Selected Reservists [SELRES]. This means they have regular jobs away from the squadron, but provide a certain number of days per month. VFC-12s maintainers are all U.S. Navy sailors, a mix of active-duty, full-time support, or the more traditional reservists, unlike the two F-5 squadrons, which have their maintenance undertaken by contractors.

U.S. Navy/Danette Baso Silvers

An F-5N of VFC-111 "Sundowners."

The great thing about VFC-12 is that we get to hand pick our staff for the most part. All our SELRES pilots are Topgun graduates with the blue patch. Probably 80% of our guys have gone through that syllabus and the experience here provides the ability to quickly transition between missions to lead a flight at the last minute. Everyone in the squadron is of a very high caliber, and the importance of having that network of people, who can coordinate pretty much anything, cannot be overstated.

The coveted blue patch is awarded to students who complete the main Topgun course, which is dedicated to friendly (Blue Air) tactics. Topgun also oversees a Navy adversary course that results in a graduate being awarded a red Topgun adversary patch. In order to lead a core OFRP event, you have to be a Level 4 adversary, explains Hutter. Individuals who graduate from the Topgun red air course are designated as a Level 5 adversary, the highest standard, and a training officer can then train Level 4 adversaries at the respective VFC units.

Jamie Hunter

The red Topgun adversary patch.

Hutter elaborates that Level 4 is essentially an adversary mission commander. It means you can provide a high-quality threat representation and meet fighter training objectives in threat simulation. It also means that you are able to manage a lot of airplanes in the airspace.

VFC-12/13/111 and VFA-204 all send pilots through the red class at Topgun, then they come back to the squadron as training officers and qualify us. We have constant discussions with Topgun and we fight based on how they assess current threat capabilities. For VFC-12 specifically, our work is all about that high-end threat replication. When the fleet squadrons need a more benign 'radar reflector' for beyond visual range type engagements, they tend to use the F-5s. Those guys also support the FRS training units, but we typically dont.

SFARP is managed by both the East and West Coast Strike Fighter Weapons Schools and it is designed to offer the most challenging division [4-ship] level fleet tactics. Were doing that here at Key West right now; four blue air fleet Hornets against up to 20 bandits. Theres no contract red air at this SFARP, but its not unheard of for them to be here. As a squadron, we have 11 Hornets here now, and we are flying three 'gos' a day.

VFC-12 offers the Navys highest level of threat replication, and its not just about a generic presentation. We study threat pilot tactics and how threat nations operate, says Hutter. We understand how threat nations of interest operate, this isnt red air between fellow JOs [Junior Officers]. Our threats are very specific. In SFARP its always Russian or Chinese aircraft. Its not targeted at those countries, but they just have the most capable airplanes. So, its targeted at those top tier airframes.

Jamie Hunter

A VFC-12 F/A-18D in "splinter" scheme.

Describing a typical SFARP mission out of NAS Key West, Lieutenant Commander Hutter says: You take off over the turquoise sea and fly over fishing boats, and do some cloud dodging. We fly in the Whiskey 174 range complex, which essentially runs between Key West and out towards Texas. The bandits flow out to the west, and the fighters start in the east. We need to get anywhere between 8 and 20 adversary aircraft together. Everyone checks in and we start our plan to confuse the fighters. The hardest part is keeping track of who is who.

We send a pilot to the TCTS [Tactical Combat Training System] range control center and they can work with the Range Training Officers on the radio to help ensure the objectives are met. Hutter clarifies that the use of a Ground Controlled Intercept (GCI) controller very much depends on how much is going on. They are there to provide additional situational awareness on the evolving skirmish. With the potential of over 20 fighters merging, the range/training safety officers are there to help avoid a collision. The VFC F-5s are now flying with Red Net. This works with the TCTS and, on an iPad in the cockpit, they can now see the whole air picture. Its a capability that VFC-12 expects to build upon when it receives its Super Hornets thanks to their Multifunction Information Distribution System (MIDS).

We use a standard height block structure [broken down within each 10,000ft block]. The blue air fighters are usually in the 5,000-9,000ft block and the bandits are 0-4,000ft. The higher and faster the shooters fly, the better the kinematics of the missiles. If we are up at 45,000ft and flying at Mach 1.2 indicated airspeed, we present a much harder problem for them. In the more complex exercises like Red Flag, you might hold for 30 minutes, fly towards the Blue guys, get told youre dead, and never see another jet. The great thing about what we do in our division level tactics is that we can get a lot closer.

U.S. Navy/MCS2C Brian Morales

VFA-204 "River Rattlers" Hornets taxi out at Key West during an SFARP.

Merging and getting into a close turning fight very much depends on the mission that we are supporting. The fighters have some missions where their acceptable level of risk is low, so we, therefore, have very few merges. In fact, they will avoid the merge at all costs, preferring to run away. The higher their acceptable level of risk for the mission is, the more merges we will have. Well have flights where everybody merges! Typically thats when theres a lot of electronic attack out there, a lot of bandits and a lot of fighters. The higher the risk their mission is, the more willingness they have to go to the merge. Unless there are Raptors joining the fight. If Raptors are there, we never get to the merge, smiles Hutter, emphasizing the U.S. Air Force fighters prowess in fighting at long range.

Approaching the merge, if we don't see the fighters then we will be at the bottom of our block height, and they will be at the top of theirs. That gives us a 1,000ft avoidance. If we see them, and were high on situational awareness, we can see everyone visually all wingmen and tally all the fighters then we are clear to come out of our block [and start Basic Fighter Maneuvers, BFM, aka dogfighting]. The contract red air providers are not permitted contractually to dogfight with fleet aircraft, and are often limited to level 180 degree turns. The Navy contract for contract air support does not allow them to BFM, Hutter confirms.

Red air tactics are so advanced now. As a JO [junior officer] I remember the bandits flew slow, they stayed level, and maneuvered very little. Today, as red air, we are making sure we are as testing to the fighters as possible. Its definitely not easy to do anymore. We are being asked to give the fighters increasingly robust presentations.

Jamie Hunter

Topgun instructors currently fly a mix of Hornets and Super Hornets in the adversary role.

As fleet units field increasing capabilities, the Navy adversaries are having to up their game. Currently, the use of simulation and synthetic training has not found its way into the VFC-12 world its all about live flying. Every day we see contractors working to make simulations better. Until its really good, seamless, we arent going to use it. In the workups towards SFARP, there is a simulator portion where we sit at the consoles and direct the red air simulation for the fighters. Until the synthetic training is seamless, it can be negative training or a waste of time if its not as good as the real thing.

Hutter says VFC-12 has seen some change with the advent of the F-35 Lightning II, but mainly in the realm of security. There are currently no separate training objectives for the F-35 than there are for the Super Hornet we test them the same way, but that will change Im sure. We are here to be threat representative and I dont think any threat country knows how to truly deal with stealth technology yet, but it takes a long time for feedback to get to us.

Having enjoyed a subtle upgrade by trading some of its F/A-18As for F/A-18C/Ds a couple of years ago as they were handed down from fleet units, Hutter says the move to the Super Hornet will have significant benefits.

Jamie Hunter

VFC-12 is expected to receive early Block I F/A-18E/Fs.

The cost per flight hour of operating just a few units of C/D Hornets is significant, and the Navy wants to remove them from the inventory fast, consolidating on the Super Hornet. This means Topgun is likely to lose its handful of adversary Hornets flown by its instructors, meaning it might receive additional adversary Rhinos. In addition, the River Rattlers too are set to convert to a new type. Rumors have said this could see the VFA-204 receive secondhand F-16s, but nothing is publicly confirmed.

For VFC-12, its new jets will be pre-Lot 25 Block I standard Super Hornets. Examples from Lot 25 and beyond are Block II standard aircraft that use high-order language (HOL) software and are equipped with the AN/APG-79 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. F/A-18E/Fs prior to Lot 25 use X-series software, which mirrors that of the Legacy Hornet. Hutter explains that a Super Hornet fleet all equipped with the Block I's AN/APG-73 mechanically scanned array radar and MIDS will be a huge advantage over the older Hornets. The current VFC-12 Hornets have a mix of AN/APG-65 and -73 radars.

Some of our missions get really complicated, and in our current Hornets we might have low situational awareness. Its not so much about being as lethal, here it's also about herding a lot of cats, says Hutter, who adds that its routine for Ambush aircrews to spend too much time being distracted by troubleshooting radar issues, and with no MIDS data link it makes the job of threat presentation work far more difficult while the pilots are busy trying to work out who is who, and where everyone is.

VFC-12 will not be the first to use the Super Hornet in the adversary role, with Topgun already operating a handful of early examples. VFC-12 should receive its first Rhino in February, with a dozen due to be on the flight line by October as it completes a staggered transition, which will enable it to continue its important mission in the meantime.

U.S. Navy/VFC-12

Proposed VFC-12 schemes designed to represent a Russian Su-57 and a Chinese J-11.

According to Hutter, the Super Hornets will give Ambush aircrews a better ability to detect targets at range, but also they will be harder to detect themselves, due to some of the low observable design features of the Super Hornet. The Hornet is easier to see than a Super Hornet, he says. There are negatives though. Seeing a different aircraft at the merge is helpful for fleet aviators. Most squadrons only ever see Super Hornets when theyre fighting.

To make its Super Hornets look like realistic bandits, some remarkable special adversary schemes are being lined up for the new VFC-12 jets. Painting these aircraft differently compared to standard gray fleet jets will be more important than ever to help distinguish the bad guys. With a host of incredible suggested Russian and Chinese liveries on the drawing board, VFC-12 is well placed to retain its position flying some of the coolest-looking jets in the Navy, as well as upping its game to retain its standing as the Navys premier adversary squadron. We will be featuring a full set of the proposed VFC-12 Super Hornet schemes as a follow up to this exclusive story very soon.

Regardless of how they end up being painted, the Super Hornets will breathe new life into the Fighting Omars and will go a long way when it comes to keeping fleet pilots ready for any potential threats they could encounter while cruising some of the world's tensest waters.

Why Blade Runner is the best sci-fi movie of all time – Looper

A casual viewer can soak in Blade Runner, more or less accept it as a visually breathtaking sci-fi action tale, and walk away satisfied. Deckard is the protagonist, played by an actor we recognize from previous heroic roles. He kills the criminals he's told to kill at the beginning of the story, and then he gets the girl. From that perspective, Blade Runner follows a familiar, comforting formula.

But wait. Deckard is ordered to execute Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer) and all of his friends on sight without any due process, for the sole crime of existing on a planet they're not supposed to be on. That doesn't quite seem fair, does it?

Why can't Roy sue the Tyrell Corporation for a life extension? Why can't he hire an attorney to help him make a case before a jury of his peers? Well, he can't because replicants don't have rights. Under the law, they're not considered people. But who gets to decide who counts as a person?

In this case, humans function as a metaphorical majority that, by the mere unchallenged virtue of being the majority, dictates the norm. This social paradigm leaves those who fall outside the norm replicants, in this case open to exploitation and abuse. It's almost as if Deckard, by working to uphold unjust laws, is a trooper in some sort of empire, and Roy is rebelling against that empire. In fact, Roy is part of a whole entire alliance of rebels. Hmmmm.

Column: Just How Old Is ‘Old Age’ in The Future? – Southern Pines Pilot

Play like you have this decision to make: Worldwide, in developed nations, people max out on average at 80 years. If you could have your life extended 40 years beyond that, would you go for it? Simply answer yes or no, please.

Genesis 6:3 might help. My spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal, it quotes the Lord. Their days will be a hundred and twenty years. Some scientists agree that 120 is about our limit.

Some doubt there is a life limit. So, lets add a scenario: What if you could choose to live forever? You go for that?

Is either 120 or immortality even possible? Answers: yes and maybe, well see.

Its yes because Jeanne Calment of Arles, France, lived to a now verified 122 years and 164 days. Jeanne stopped smoking at 117, but never gave up her nightly port wine. She took up fencing at 80 and bicycled into her 100s. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected from the future, she said, I expect a short one. Jeanne was born in 1875 and died in 1997.

Many scientists use Calments age as sort of a doable goal for extending life. According to Woody Allen, You can live to be 100 if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be 100. But 100 aint 120. And Woodys quip doesnt answer whether we can end The End for humans. Could other species shed light?

Some species might suggest there is no life-limit. Tortoises live to 255; an invertebrate Quahog clam clocked in at 507; Greenland shark, 512; and one bristlecone pine dubbed the Methuselah, is 4,852 years old. But according to Aging Research Reviews as reported in National Geographic, the winner is a deep-sea sponge. Age: at least 11,000 years.

So, whats up? Human age is up. This year, the United Nations expects the number of centenarians, worldwide, to exceed 573,000. For perspective, eight years ago, the United Nations estimated that there were only 316,600 living centenarians worldwide.

But beyond 100, Mother Nature hits the brakes. The number of supercentenarians, those making it into the 110 club, though not known for sure, is estimated to be about 600, worldwide.

What is known is that as of Oct. 21, there were 50 supercentenarians (18 from the U.S. and 11 from Japan; 90 percent female.) The aging curve changes between 100 and 110.

According to British actuary Benjamin Gompertzs predictions, the mortality rate for adult humans roughly doubles every additional eight years. However likely you are to die in 2020, youll be twice as likely in 2028, four times as likely in 2036. The death curve goes up like that, sharply till 100.

So, while reaching 100 is still unlikely at present, if you do reach it, things begin looking up. The sharpness of Gompertzs mortality curve flattens out at about 100.

Some scientists have explained that the deceleration of the death rate beyond 100 could suggest that there is no fixed limit to the human lifespan.

Traditionally, aging has been viewed as inevitable as death. But what if age isnt inevitable, but a curable disease? What about death then?

British gerontologist Aubrey de Grey, chief science officer at a California research foundation, says aging is not unavoidable, its simply a medical problem that science can solve. While de Grey does consider life extension a health issue eliminating age-related diseases like cancer, stroke, Alzheimers, heart disease, etc. he views it from different lenses.

Treating and beating age-associated diseases has always been approached discreetly. Tackle this, tackle that. But thats precisely because aging has never been regarded as a disease. If it were, and were conquered, then age-associated diseases would no longer exist. Win-win.

David Masci, a researcher for Pew Research Center, says life extension is no longer the realm of cranks and science fiction writers. Heavy hitters are pouring serious money into tackling aging at its root.

From 1997 to 2013, Oracle co-founder billionaire Larry Ellison contributed $45 million annually to his Ellison Medical Foundation, which focuses on the aging process while simultaneously lowering and eliminating age-related diseases.

Ellison stopped contributing in 2013 because Google founded California Life Co., which seeks to reverse-engineer the biology that controls lifespan and devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives essentially Ellisons goal.

Life extension approaches vary, from ways to eliminate decrepit (senescent) cells, to pursuing Metformin, the closest now to a drug that appears to target aging, to extrapolating from discovery that a single-gene mutation doubles the lifespan of certain roundworms.

So maybe well see. Meanwhile, remember that Lucille Ball said, The secret of staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.
