The Army has become, by its own admission, overly reliant on a permissive air environment and the blessings that unfold with close air support, Air Force long-range strike and golden hour capable casualty evacuation.

Those decades of uncontested airspace that previous generations of soldiers enjoyed can no longer be counted upon.

And its not just in the close fight that air is challenged. Advanced, interlocking networks of air defense strung along the borders and beyond by near-peer competitors such as Russia and China mean that at times the joint force can be hamstrung in even gaining access, leaving the Army far from the fight.

To get after that problem set, Brig. Gen. John Rafferty has his team looking at everything from increasing range and accuracy of the tried-and-true base of the artillery 155mm to a new Precision Strike Missile and hypersonic that will put the Army back in the strategic fires game for the first time in a long time.

Rafferty spoke recently with Army Times about those developments and what is headed to fires formations in the coming years.

First, the newly promoted brigadier general had to tip his hat to a combination of efforts in both structure, new organizations such as the CFTs and Army Futures Command, and focused centers that are finding new ways to solve the distance and accuracy problems of expanding how the fires community contributes to the maneuver fight.

Shortly before an interview with Army Times, Rafferty had just been briefed by the Readiness and Analysis Center at AFC at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. They provided a lethality analysis of near peer threats in fires. While he couldnt disclose details of the briefing for obvious reasons, he did say that the renewed efforts on tactical, operational and strategic fires are meeting previously identified gaps.

Rafferty said that developments by adversaries to negate U.S. advantages have meant the development of coastal defense, long range air defense and extremely long range artillery.

The U.S. solution has multiple answers.

Strategic fires include the Armys Space and Missile Commands Long Range Hypersonic Weapon and the Strategic Long Range Cannon.

And while putting steel on target is one method, the future will likely combine the kinetic with cyber and electronic warfare to both disable enemy systems and combine to create windows of opportunity for the kinetic strike and maneuver.

Over the past year, Rafferty said, the joint forces science and technology community has been working with commercial industry and NASA on some specific tech challenges. The Armys Science Board has deemed what theyre trying to do in the hypersonic arena as entirely feasible. Tests coming soon at White Sands will try to get through an early technology gate.

Those efforts could result in a full-fledged Army program before 2023, he said.

He couldnt speak to specific ranges, due to security concerns, but said that hypersonics are looking at ranges in the thousands of kilometers, while the strategic cannon is in the hundreds of kilometers range.

Operational-level fires is focused on the Precision Strike Missile, or PrSM.

The existing Army Tactical Missile System has its limits. It has been in service since the 1980s. While its been upgraded several times and will continue to be upgraded under a service life extension program to keep it in the inventory for another decade, it is seeing the horizon of its usefulness.

And theres the range. The ATACMS pushes out to about 300km. Which was fine under past conditions but cant keep up with current competition.

The PrSM will push its range out past 500km now that the United States no longer has to restrain its systems to under that range due to the break of the INF Treaty.

The PrSM will be cheaper to produce than the ATACMs and provide two missiles per pod where now its only one per pod with the ATACMs, Rafferty said.

That helps logistics, the number of launchers needed for certain mission sets and flexibility for commanders on how to load out their force. They expect initial fielding of some of those systems by 2023, with another add-on technology spiral two years later that will add in ways to hit precision emitting targets and operate more effectively in maritime environments and more contested areas.

Tests later this year will establish which companies will continue to the end of the competition. The next wave of development will push the missiles range past the 650km range, he said.

Were committed to the shape and size and keeping two per pod, Rafferty said. But we have to be a little bit patient with the technology.

Thats, in part, because the pre-existing INF treaty didnt just limit fielding but also limited investment in research and development for improving those systems, especially long range propulsion.

Down at the tactical level, where most soldiers get to hear things go boom, is work on Extended Range Cannon Artillery. The ERCA program is putting a lot of changes to both the self-propelled howitzer system and the round it uses.

The big project is one thats been moving along for more than a year now, thats Paladin Integration Management. The PIM program is modernizing the self-propelled howitzer with a robust chassis, safety improvements, electrical system improvements, an auto-loader and longer cannon for longer ranges.

Rafferty announced that shift earlier this year. The cannon will push from a 39 caliber to a 58 caliber length, extending the barrel from 20 feet to 30 feet. Cannon calibers are also a function of length, unlike with rifle caliber barrels.

And the Paladin now has a sliding block breech, like what the tanks use. That means it can withstand more powerful charges in its round and a higher rate of fire without breaking.

Essentially, its an indestructible type of breech, Rafferty said.

But whats inside that breech is what makes the impact.

The 155mm round is undergoing changes it likely hasnt seen in decades. New propellants, precision guidance kits and other technologies are pushing the round out to the 70km range in testing, thats more than double the standard limit of about 30km.

Rafferty said the team expects the first battalions worth of the new system fully fielded by 2023.

But, there are hurdles. Pushing the limits of physics comes with its own set of challenges.

Theyre having to do more gun hardening work to help the systems withstand the increased pressures and stresses.

Even precision guidance brings novel obstacles to overcome. For example, by firing such long ranges, the 155mm rounds are reaching altitudes they had not previously reached.

That means that their guidance kits mush bear the temperature changes and also move through thinner air, which changes the calculus by which theyre set to hit their targets.

And new propellants are pushing muzzle velocities and chamber pressures to numbers that theyve not had to operate before.

Were on the margin of what cannon artillery can do but were going forward with those margins, he said.

And all of these tech changes are having their own ripple effects as far reaching as how the Army fights.

Sorry, we cant help you, said the Apple store Genius. My AirPods were dying. After just 15 minutes of use, the wireless headphones I use daily chirp a sad little battery-depleted alert. I came to Apple to get them repaired.

The employee said there were lots of people like me, with $159 AirPods purchased in 2016 and 2017 that now cant hold a charge. But even though Apple promises battery service, the store had no way to fix my AirPods. It didnt even have a way to test them.

Cupertino, we have a problem: AirPods are comfortable and convenient headphones that have attracted tens of millions of customers. But each one of those white sticks contains a rechargeable battery marching toward an untimely death in as little as two years. Apples plan to deal with that reality is just to sell us new ear buds. When your AirPods day comes, the only option is to ask Apple for discounted replacements but youll need to know its code word to even get that.

Not long ago, headphones were among the most universal, long-lasting electronics. We shouldnt let Apple turn them into expensive, disposable electronics. Its hurting our wallets and the environment.

Apple doesnt dispute that the lithium-ion batteries inside AirPods wear out. All rechargeable batteries have a limited life span and may eventually need to be serviced or recycled, Apple says on its website. Replacing batteries is very common on phones and laptops. In 2018, Apple stores got deluged when the company offered to replace the batteries in older iPhones for $29.

But with AirPods, Apple offers far less help. First, theres no way to determine the health of the batteries in the ear buds or their charging case. Apple wont even share guidelines on their life expectancy. AirPods are built to be long-lasting, said Apple spokeswoman Lori Lodes, without specifics. Mine went for 34 months; others have reported they die as soon as 18 months.

When your AirPod batteries finally go, even Apples employees are confused about your options. Across three separate support encounters in the store and online, they told me I had to buy a replacement pair for $138, nearly the price of a whole new set. But I remembered Apple had once told me it would service depleted batteries for $49.

After weeks of back-and-forth with Apple I finally got answers:

A $98 battery fix is still mighty expensive. Apple will replace the battery on an iPhone for as little as $49. An Apple Watch battery costs just $79. What makes AirPods so different? Because Apples battery service for AirPods is code for throwing it away. Apple isnt repairing AirPods its just replacing the ear buds and recycling your old ones.

To understand why, I performed an autopsy on a dearly departed pair. Inside, I found the design of AirPods makes them inevitably obsolete.

What could be so hard about replacing the battery in an AirPod? I dont ordinarily go CSI on gadgets, so I sought advice from some folks who do.

Kyle Wiens, the CEO of repair website iFixit, offers instructions on how to disassemble electronics and sells replacement parts. The first time Wiens tried to get inside an AirPod, he cut himself and bled all over it. Another time, the battery combusted in a poof of smoke on his team.

AirPods were never meant to be opened, Wiens warned me.

But I wanted to see for myself. With Wiens watching, I began the operation with the silver cap at the end of the AirPod stick. You might think it unscrews to let you get inside. No such luck. Its glued in there, and I couldnt yank it out even after carefully heating the AirPod to loosen the glue. That meant I had to cut in. To save my fingers, Wiens loaned me a special vibrating knife that slices plastic.

Inside the AirPod, I found so much glue I couldnt even tug out the now-exposed end of the battery with tweezers. So I cut very carefully along the edges of the AirPod stick, to crack open a section like the top of a coconut. There, at last, was the battery, about as thick as a large spaghetti noodle.

I had avoided spilling blood, but after all the cutting I still had a problem: My AirPod was now a Humpty Dumpty in so many pieces Id never be able to reassemble it again. Wiens said hed tried this five times, across both the first- and second-generation AirPods, and awarded AirPods a repairability score of zero out of 10.

The cause of death on my AirPods was clear: bad product design.

Earlier this year, the website Vice called AirPods a tragedy of disposable wealth. I see them as a symptom of Apples preoccupation with thin products. Its the tech-world version of fashions fixation on skinny models, where Apple sets the trend and other manufacturers feel pressure to follow.

Excessive thinness isnt healthy for gadgets, either. Apples desire to shave a few millimeters off designs has resulted in MacBook keyboards that fail, iPads that catch fire at recycling centers and now millions of AirPods that will probably end up in the trash.

Sealing up electronics with glue instead of screws and latches can help make devices lighter and more resistant to moisture and dust. But great ear buds dont have to be impenetrable. iFixit found a way to pop open Samsungs $129 Galaxy Buds, so replacement batteries can slip in kind of like on a watch. Samsung doesnt officially offer this repair option, but iFixit sells a pair of replacement batteries for $29.

Apples disposable AirPod design is expensive for us. But its doing permanent damage to our environment. Thats not how Apple talks about it, though.

Apples products are designed with the environment in mind, said Lodes, the Apple spokeswoman. Everything from the materials we select to the way we approach recycling is meant to leave the world better than we found it.

How exactly are AirPods designed with the environment in mind? Because you can bring them to Apple to be recycled. We work closely with our recyclers to ensure AirPods are properly recycled and provide support to recyclers outside of our supply chain as well, said Lodes.

Thats like saying your daily paper coffee cup habit is good for the environment because you always put it in the recycling bin. AirPods may actually be worse than that: Theyre so small, theres isnt much material that can be recycled from them. Significant energy, water and materials go just into the process of making AirPods.

The golden rule for helping the earth is to produce less new stuff. Electronics companies can do that by making their products last as long as possible through repair and reuse.

In the Greenpeace 2017 Guide to Greener Electronics, Apple got a B- grade overall because of its commitments to using renewable energy and efforts to create a closed-loop supply chain. But the environmental group gave Apple a D in the category of product life extension, because it has consistently made it more difficult for customers to repair their devices, replace their batteries, or upgrade the devices so that they continue to stay in use.

Apple isnt the only tech company guilty of pushing consumption over repair. New $130 headphones from Amazon called Echo Buds contain batteries that cant be repaired, the company told me. (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.) Microsoft says it would also replace an entire unit when the battery fails on its $249 Surface Earbuds.

Before this trend continues, lets agree on a common-sense rule suggested by Wiens: The life span of an expensive, resource-intensive gadget shouldnt be limited to the life span of one consumable component. You wouldnt buy an electric toothbrush where you couldnt replace the brush. Or a car with glued-on tires.

Apple kept fundamentally the same design for AirPods between its first- and second-generation of the headphones, which debuted in March. Now, the Apple rumor mill has lit up with hints of forthcoming third-generation AirPods in pre-release code for iOS 13.2.

Lets hope this time around, AirPods really are designed with the environment in mind. Not to mention our wallets.

On Monday, a fire broke out at TAQA's Tern Alpha platform, located about 90 nm to the northeast of the Shetland Islands in the UK North Sea. One worker was injured and medevaced by helicopter to Lerwick for treatment.

According to local media, a small fire started on Tern Alpha on Monday afternoon. The platform shut down temporarily and the fire was quickly extinguished. One worker suffered an arm injury due to the fire, prompting a medevac request to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. An HM Coastguard helicopter out of Sumburgh flew to Tern Alpha to carry the injured worker to shore.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is under way, and production was expected to resume Tuesday. TAQA told media that the worker has already been discharged from the hospital.

The Tern platform was built by Shell in the late 1980s, and it handles production from its own reservoir and from the nearby Hudson, Kestrel, Cladhan and Falcon fields. It was operated under a joint Shell / Exxon license until 2008, when it was sold to Abu Dhabi state oil company TAQA.Tern and the nearby Eider, North Cormorant, South Cormorant, Kestrel and Pelican fields were in decline, and Shell offered them to TAQA as a package for about $680 million. At the time of sale, the fields produced a combined 25-40,000 bpd, down from a peak of 200,000 bpd in the early 1990s.

TAQA has been investing in both plug-and-abandonment work and life extension measures for its North Sea holdings, including a conversion of the aging Eider production platform to a "utility" support role. Today, the firm's entire European portfolio produces about 40,000 bpd.

Fire breaks out on Heather Alpha

In a separate incident Monday, a fire broke out on EnQuest's Heather Alpha platform, a 1978-built installation about 25 nm south of Tern Alpha. The fire was quickly put out, EnQuest told media, but two workers were injured and had to be evacuated. Both have already been discharged from the hospital.

Last March, several gas detectors were triggered on Heather Alpha after a release from a flare system which was extinguished during operation. Gas detectors picked up the leak, triggering an immediate automated shutdown.The UK Health and Safety Executive determined that the incident exposed 131 workers on Healther Alpha to the risk of a fire or explosion.

The Navy is currently analyzing air frames, targeting systems, AI-enabled sensors, new weapons and engine technologies to engineer a new 6th-Generation fighter to fly alongside the F-35 and ultimately replace the F/A-18.

The Navy program, called Next-Generation Air Dominance, has moved beyond a purely conceptual phase and begun the exploration of prototype systems and airframes as it pursues a new, carrier-launched 6th-Gen fighter to emerge in 2030 and beyond, service officials explained.

Some important areas of consideration include derivative and developmental air vehicle designs, advanced engines, propulsion, weapons, mission systems, electronic warfare and other emerging technologies, Navy spokeswoman Lt. Lauren Chatmas told Warrior earlier this year.

A formal Analysis of Alternatives, expected to complete this year, is weighing the advantages of leveraging nearer-term existing technologies such as new variants or upgrades to cutting edge weapons, sensors and stealth configurations - or allowing more time for leap-ahead developmental systems to emerge.

The current analysis follows a now-completed Initial Capabilities Document detailing some of the sought-after requirements for the new aircraft, or family of aircraft, Chatmas explained.

Anticipated decisions about a 6th-Gen fighter balance themselves upon the as-of-yet unknown maturity of various promising new weapons and technologies nearing a threshold of operational possibility.

For instance, some now-in-development next-gen stealth technologies, including new radar-evading configurations, coating materials and advanced thermal-signature reduction are fast-approaching levels of combat readiness. Yet, absent a clear timeframe when, for example, new stealth or AI enabled sensors can ensure overmatch for decades to come, Navy developers are thinking it may make sense to push the current art-of-the-possible to the maximum extent. This challenge, explored by a Naval Postgraduate School essay called The 6th-Generation Quandry, poses the question as to whether it might be equally if not more effective to postpone formal 6th-generation development until truly breakthrough advances emerge, while pursuing advanced variants of current, yet upgradable platforms in the interim.

The 2016 paper, from the Naval Postgraduate School Acquisition Research Program, cites a handful of current systems showing significant long-term promise. The paper sites new models of the F-35 optimized for air combat, the emerging B-21, drone-launching C-130 mother ships and weapons truck arsenal planes are positioned to optimize current technological progress.

These systems, including a B-52-like arsenal plane, unmanned fighter jets, AI-empowered sensors and new weapons with unprecedented range are designed to accommodate new iterations of AI, processing speeds, software upgrades and other incremental improvements.

According to this logic, there simply might not be enough of a margin of difference in performance between the best upgraded platforms of today - and something entirely new which could be built in the next 10 years or so.

Could these upgradable systems, fortified by new-iterations of stealth technology now being woven into the B-21, themselves be sufficient to propel naval aviation superiority for decades? This would alleviate the risk and expense of pursuing something truly breakthrough in the near term, potentially freeing up funding and resources to explore paradigm-changing air-fighter technologies for the long term.

Furthermore, current sensors, avionics and weapons systems are increasingly AI-reliant, a circumstance which makes it easier to greatly improve performance by integrating new algorithms, analytics or processing speed. In effect, all of this raises the question as to whether an entirely new airframe is truly needed to achieve overmatch in coming decades? By 2030?

These questions seem to be informing the current Navy rationale, which is to look at both new airframes as well as adaptations of the best of whats available. The latter option brings its own advantages, because various industry developers are already building prototypes of 6th-Gen fighters with newly designed, stealthier airframes. Looking at applications of AI, miniaturized long-range sensors, targeting technology and drones operating with ever-increasing levels of autonomy - some contend that perhaps some of the most essential ingredients of long-term transformational technologies are, in effect, already here. This would be the basis upon which a nearer-term aircraft, drawing from some off-the-shelf-items, would be pursued.

Some of these decisions are also expected to be impacted by the success with which the Navy is able to keep extending the combat service life of the F/A-18. The Navys F/A-18 Service Life Extension Program has already extended the aircrafts initial plans to fly 6,000 flight hours to 8,000 hours through a series of upgrades. Now, looking at the airframes and the state of cutting-edge avionics, the service is hoping to push its fleet of F/A-18s to 10,000 hours.

Navy officials tell Warrior these upgrades are significant and, in many cases, can bring the F/A-18 combat performance well into the future. Some of the adjustments start with the airframes themselves; Service Life Assessment Programs look to possibly replace the center barrel of the airframe and analyze the fatigue of the Nacelle (engine coating or skin), service officials say.

The F/A-18 upgrades also add new navigation technology, digital memory devices, mission computers, helmet-mounted cueing systems, Electronically Scanned Array Radar and an advanced targeting sensor called Infrared Search and Track, As a passive sensor, IRST enables better targeting while not emitting a signal, making it vulnerable to enemy electronic warfare attacks.

All Paths Point to 6th-Gen AI

There is widespread consensus that applications of AI appear to provide the framework for the most defining expected technological progress. In fact, a 2017 paper from a 16-nation NATO conglomerate of analysts, called the Joint Air Power Competence Center, raises questions about when, and how, AI may outpace the human ability to keep up. The essay, titled Air Warfare Communication in a Networked Environment, quotes Air Force Acquisition Executive William Roper from his previous role directing the Pentagons Strategic Capabilities Office, saying AI is progressing beyond the human ability to interface with it.

For instance, smart sensors able to gather, analyze and organize vast volumes of combat information in milliseconds, using AI-fortified algorithms, are now being built into airframes themselves to combine new sensing technology without increasing an aircrafts radar signature. The absence of an external antenna, pod or structured array of some kind removes otherwise more radar-detectable structures from an airframe.

Smart sensors and smart antenna arrays with adaptive properties would be embedded into the structure of an aircraft, an essay from Jain Universitys International Institute for Aerospace Engineering states. ( Sensor Technology and Futuristic Of Fighter Aircraft, Jain Univ).

At the same time, while massive increases in sensor ranges, data-sharing and long-range connectivity will continue to bring as-of-yet unprecedented advantages to warfare operations, there are also challenges which emerge as combat becomes more networked. Referring to this phenomenon as creating clusters of embedded ISR, the Joint Air Power Competence Center paper warns of security risks and what it calls hyper-connectivity.

New much-longer range sensors and weapons, incorporating emerging iterations of AI, are expected to make warfare more disaggregated, and much less of a linear force on force type of engagement. Such a phenomenon, driven by new technology, underscores warfare reliance upon sensors and information networks. All of this, naturally, requires the expansive "embedded ISR" discussed by the paper. Network reliant warfare is of course potentially much more effective in improving targeting and reducing sensor-to-shooter time over long distances, yet it brings a significant need to organize and optimize the vast, yet crucial, flow of information.

Not everybody in the network needs to see and hear everything. There needs to be a hierarchy, and a backup architecture for degraded network operations, the paper writes.

These types of challenges, wherein vast amounts of ISR data needs to be aggregated, analyzed and organized, are precisely what AI and high-speed processing can address. Using advanced algorithms and real-time analytics, computing power can instantly identify and disseminate key moments or items of combat relevance, thereby establishing priorities and massively quickening the human decision cycle.

AI-informed combat decisions, enabled by accelerated real-time analytics, allow human decision makers to draw upon otherwise inaccessible pools of data. Algorithms can integrate new information, instantly compare it against vast amounts of stored data, and come to informed conclusions without requiring human intervention. Often referred to as easing the "cognitive burden," AI and iterations of man-machine interface, can perform time-consuming or otherwise impossible information-analysis tasks, all while a human functions as ultimate decision-maker in a command and control role. While AI is quickly advancing toward being able to discern and organize seemingly subjective information, there are many decision-making abilities and problem solving faculties regarded as unique to human cognition.

One of Chaskas most noticeable landmarks has had the wind knocked out of it.

A turbine, located near Pioneer Ridge Middle School and just off of Highway 212, has been shut down and bladeless since Sept. 10 for refurbishment, according to a Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (MMPA) official. The repair of the blades is part of a refurbishment and life extension project.

It is scheduled to be fixed over the next couple months and will regain its gusto in November, according to City Administrator Matt Podhradsky.

The turbine is connected to Chaskas local distribution system and produces up to 160 kilowatts of energy per hour from the wind.

The agency owns and maintains it, and each city has their own turbine that exists within their city, Podhradsky said. There are 11 other cities in the MMPA.

Last year, the agency started providing energy to Elk River, which is the only city that still needs a wind turbine built, Podhradsky added.

The turbine in Chaska has been in operation for almost a decade and now needs to be refurbished as part of its maintenance cycle, according to an email from Krystal Knutson, a senior associate at MMPA. The project includes replacing the hydraulic hoses and pumps, replacement of all control systems, and cleaning and painting of the turbine tower.

The 10 other turbines in the other member cities are also down for routine maintenance, according to Podhradsky.

Turbines have a six-month maintenance schedule and the one in Chaska works during the winter. However, it is turned off occasionally because of ice buildup or if it is below approximately -4 degrees, according to Knutson.

The wind turbine was built near Pioneer Ridge so students could learn about wind power. It is located near a trail for residents to check it out. An informational sign explains how wind is converted to energy.

Additionally, MMPA (Chaskas wholesale electric provider) sponsors an energy education program that buses fourth-graders from member communities to MMPAs Faribault Energy Park power plant every May. At the plant, students rotate through three stations that provide educational information about energy efficiency, renewable energy (including visiting an on-site wind turbine), and power generation and distribution, according to Knutsons email. Students from both Clover Ridge Elementary and St. Johns School in Chaska participated in the program this year.

The maintenance cost of the turbine is covered by MMPA, according to Knutson. When asked what the price of the maintenance would be, Knutson wrote in an email, MMPA does not want to provide to this information.

The cost would not be directly billed back to the city, Podhradsky said, adding that it is supported by rates paid by residents in the member communities.

MMPA also has 24 turbines in Blooming Prairie and 39 in Sauk Centre.

The 80-foot turbine was one of 11 shipped to Minnesota from California, for $300,000 each in 2009.

In 2009, parts for the wind turbine were delivered to Chaska and after delays from the cold winter, it was up and operational the next year.

Initially, energy from the wind turbine was spotty. The turbine had to be repaired three times in 2010. Once because it was creating loud noises, and again almost four months later after a malfunctioning brake at the Faribault site triggered the shutdown of all MMPA turbines.

Last year, MMPA installed solar panels near Clover Ridge Elementary as part of its Hometown Solar Energy program.

The idea was to put the panels near a school so teachers could tie it back to their science curriculum, Podhradsky said.

The purpose of the grant program is to provide an educational asset to our member communities and to help teach local youth first-hand how sunlight is converted into electricity, as well as the unique characteristics of solar power, according to MMPAs website.

Currently, 11 of the 12 member communities have solar panel installations.

MMPA is mandated to have a quarter of its electric utilities supported by renewable energy by 2025. Currently, the agency is on track at about 21-22%, Podhradsky said.

The employee said there were lots of people like me, with $159 AirPods purchased in 2016 and 2017 that now cant hold a charge. But even though Apple promises battery service, the store had no way to fix my AirPods. It didnt even have a way to test them.

Cupertino, we have a problem: AirPods are comfortable and convenient headphones that have attracted tens of millions of customers. But each one of those white sticks contains a rechargeable battery marching toward an untimely death in as little as two years. Apples plan to deal with that reality is just to sell us new ear buds. When your AirPods day comes, the only option is to ask Apple for discounted replacements but youll need to know its code word to even get that.

Not long ago, headphones were among the most universal, long-lasting electronics. We shouldnt let Apple turn them into expensive, disposable electronics. Its hurting our wallets and the environment.

Apple doesnt dispute that the lithium-ion batteries inside AirPods wear out. All rechargeable batteries have a limited life span and may eventually need to be serviced or recycled, Apple says on its website. Replacing batteries is very common on phones and laptops. In 2018, Apple stores got deluged when the company offered to replace the batteries in older iPhones for $29.

But with AirPods, Apple offers far less help. First, theres no way to determine the health of the batteries in the ear buds or their charging case. Apple wont even share guidelines on their life expectancy. AirPods are built to be long-lasting, said Apple spokeswoman Lori Lodes, without specifics. Mine went for 34 months; others have reported they die as soon as 18 months.

When your AirPod batteries finally go, even Apples employees are confused about your options. Across three separate support encounters in the store and online, they told me I had to buy a replacement pair for $138, nearly the price of a whole new set. But I remembered Apple had once told me it would service depleted batteries for $49. I reported that, along with my recommendation to buy AirPods. So what gives?

After weeks of back-and-forth with Apple and refusing to take no for an answer at the store I finally got answers:

If your AirPods are less than a year old and the battery is not performing up to the promised five hours of listening time, an Apple store will replace them at no cost.

Apple recently began selling its AppleCare+ warranty for $29, which covers the battery, too. But this extended warranty lasts only two years which wouldnt have been long enough to save my AirPods.

If your AirPods are out of warranty, Apple will replace them for $49 per stick so in reality, $98 total. A replacement for the charging case, which doesnt wear out as quickly, is also $49. The key phrase to say is battery service. (Apple is providing additional training to customer service representatives on that point, but if you still have trouble, show them this link or this column.)

A $98 battery fix is still mighty expensive. Apple will replace the battery on an iPhone for as little as $49. An Apple Watch battery costs just $79. What makes AirPods so different? Because Apples battery service for AirPods is code for throwing it away. Apple isnt repairing AirPods its just replacing the ear buds and recycling your old ones.

To understand why, I performed an autopsy on a dearly departed pair. Inside, I found the design of AirPods makes them inevitably obsolete.

What could be so hard about replacing the battery in an AirPod? I dont ordinarily go CSI on gadgets, so I sought advice from some folks who do.

Kyle Wiens, the CEO of repair website iFixit, offers instructions on how to disassemble electronics and sells replacement parts. The first time Wiens tried to get inside an AirPod, he cut himself and bled all over it. Another time, the battery combusted in a poof of smoke on his team.

AirPods were never meant to be opened, Wiens warned me.

But I wanted to see for myself. With Wiens watching, I began the operation with the silver cap at the end of the AirPod stick. You might think it unscrews to let you get inside. No such luck. Its glued in there, and I couldnt yank it out even after carefully heating the AirPod to loosen the glue. That meant I had to cut in and to save my fingers, Wiens loaned me a special vibrating knife that slices plastic.

Inside the AirPod, I found so much glue I couldnt even tug out the now-exposed end of the battery with tweezers. So I cut very carefully along the edges of the AirPod stick, to crack open a section like the top of a coconut. There, at last, was the battery, about as thick as a large spaghetti noodle.

I had avoided spilling blood, but after all the cutting I still had a problem: My AirPod was now a Humpty Dumpty in so many pieces Id never be able to reassemble it again. Wiens said hed tried this five times, across both the first- and second-generation AirPods, and awarded AirPods a repairability score of zero out of 10. There is no way we can feasibly understand taking the battery out without completely destroying the AirPod, he said.

I asked Apple whether that was true. It didnt answer.

The cause of death on my AirPods was clear: bad product design.

Earlier this year, the website Vice called AirPods a tragedy of disposable wealth. I see them as a symptom of Apples preoccupation with thin products. Its the tech-world version of fashions fixation on skinny models, where Apple sets the trend and other manufacturers feel pressure to follow.

Excessive thinness isnt healthy for gadgets, either. Apples desire to shave a few millimeters off designs has resulted in MacBook keyboards that fail, iPads that catch fire at recycling centers and now millions of AirPods that will probably end up in the trash.

Sealing up electronics with glue instead of screws and latches can help make devices lighter and more resistant to moisture and dust. But great ear buds even ones tiny enough to sit in your ears dont have to be impenetrable. iFixit found a way to pop open Samsungs $129 Galaxy Buds, so replacement batteries can slip in kind of like on a watch. Samsung doesnt officially offer this repair option, but iFixit sells a pair of replacement batteries for $29.

Apples disposable AirPod design is expensive for us. But its doing permanent damage to our environment. Thats not how Apple talks about it, though.

Apples products are designed with the environment in mind, said Lodes, the Apple spokeswoman. Everything from the materials we select to the way we approach recycling is meant to leave the world better than we found it.

How exactly are AirPods designed with the environment in mind? Because you can bring them to Apple to be recycled. We work closely with our recyclers to ensure AirPods are properly recycled and provide support to recyclers outside of our supply chain as well, said Lodes.

Thats like saying your daily paper coffee cup habit is good for the environment because you always put it in the recycling bin. AirPods may actually be worse than that: Theyre so small, theres isnt much material that can be recycled from them. Significant energy, water and materials go just into the process of making AirPods.

The golden rule for helping the earth is to produce less new stuff. Electronics companies can do that by making their products last as long as possible through repair and reuse which are all but impossible with AirPods.

In the Greenpeace 2017 Guide to Greener Electronics, Apple got a B- grade overall because of its commitments to using renewable energy and efforts to create a closed-loop supply chain. But the environmental group gave Apple a D in the category of product life extension, because it has consistently made it more difficult for customers to repair their devices, replace their batteries, or upgrade the devices so that they continue to stay in use.

Apple isnt the only tech company guilty of pushing consumption over repair. New $130 headphones from Amazon called Echo Buds contain batteries that cant be repaired, the company told me. (Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.) Microsoft says it would also replace an entire unit when the battery fails on its $249 Surface Earbuds.

Before this trend continues, lets agree on a common-sense rule suggested by Wiens: The life span of an expensive, resource-intensive gadget shouldnt be limited to the life span of one consumable component. You wouldnt buy an electric toothbrush where you couldnt replace the brush. Or a car with glued-on tires.

Apple kept fundamentally the same design for AirPods between its first- and second-generation of the headphones, which debuted in March. Now, the Apple rumor mill has lit up with hints of forthcoming third-generation AirPods in pre-release code for iOS 13.2.

Lets hope this time around, AirPods really are designed with the environment in mind. Not to mention our wallets.

In many industries, theres usually one or two companies that become nearly synonymous with their particular market. One of the most obvious examples is Coca Cola (KO). Think about it: We still refer to a soda as a coke, even though the soft drink manufacturer allegedly abandoned using cocaine in its formulation long ago. In emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, its more difficult to pinpoint a clear leader in many cases. Nvidia (NVDA) is still the obvious choice for AI chips. After that, there are very few household names that represent anything close to a pure play in AI technology. However, one name has emerged in the last few years that has become the face of AI drug discovery: Insilico Medicine.

Regular readers will certainly recognize the startup as a key player in the longevity industry. Weve profiled the company on several lists here and here related to drug discovery, as part of our ongoing coverage of life extension science. September was a particularly good month for the Rockville, Maryland startup. At the beginning of the month, it published a paper in Nature Biotechnology that detailed its efforts to design and validate a drug candidate for treating fibrosis and other diseases in just 46 days, shaving off months if not years from the discovery process, not to mention saving millions of dollars. A week later, the five-year-old startup completed a $37 million Series B, bringing its total disclosed funding to $51.3 million.

We recently caught up with Insilico Medicine co-founder and CEO Alex Zhavoronkov, who is on a crusade to prove that automation will be a big part of the future of healthcare. We talked about the companys recent achievement in accelerating the drug discovery process; its open challenge to big pharma; Insilicos numerous partnerships and joint ventures; the difficulties in getting funding for longevity therapy research and development; and the AI hype surrounding healthcare in general.

We wont spend too much time dissecting Insilicos latest achievement, as thats already gotten plenty of press. You can find a good deep dive into the paper and its significance by Margaretta Colangelo, a managing partner at Deep Knowledge Ventures, which made some of the first investments in the company about five years ago. It wasnt just the fact that Insilico Medicines new AI platform, called Generative Tensorial Reinforcement Learning (GENTRL), accomplished the feat of designing and validating a drug in such a short timeframe. It was also the first time anyone had combined two AI techniques known as generative adversarial networks (GANs) and generative reinforcement learning for drug discovery. Both Colangelo and Zhavoronkov refer to the achievement as pharmas AlphaGo moment, referring to Google DeepMinds defeat of a professional Go player.

Zhavoronkov first presented the paper at a conference in Basal, Switzerland, hometown to two of big pharmas biggest players Roche and Novartis. The choice of venue was obviously intentional, as Insilico has actively sought the spotlight since it was founded in 2014 in order to prove the value of AI to improve human health and quality of life. In 2015, for example, a group of Zhavoronkovsstudents and colleagues founded, Youth Laboratories, listing him as an adviser. It was a machine vision company that focused on aging and skin health which made headlines in 2016 for hosting an online beauty contest, Beauty.AI, that was judged solely by machines and attracted a bit of controversy for picking mostlyfair-skinned people. That led to yet another project, Diversity.AI, an effort to use machine learning to make sure we all have an equal opportunity to be spied on marketed to. Last year, the company was named to CB Insights prestigious AI 100 list.

But back to Insilicos primary focus: defeating age-related disease. Zhavoronkov believes his companys AI platform has advanced to the point where it could automate drug pipeline development from end to end and produce a marketable drug within 24 months or less with the right kind of backing. So while its efforts have focused on pre-clinical activities like identifying drug targets and developing therapeutic molecules around those specific disease targets, Insilicos AI also boasts predictive powers.

We also work with some of our pharma partners on predicting clinical trial outcomes; we also analyze clinical trials data, said Zhavoronkov, who is looking to partner with a major pharmaceutical company on an XPRIZE-type challenge where Insilico races against the clock to develop the first drug fully developed using artificial intelligence and one that targets a rare disease. If no contenders emerge, Zhavoronkov said he still believes it will be possible to develop a viable drug using AI within four or five years.

He noted that investment banks are also interested in Insilicos AI predictive analytics around clinical outcomes. The reason for the attention is obvious: If investors can leverage a tool that can better predict the chance of success or failure of a particular drug, that would surely influence how much money if any they are willing to put into a particular project or company. Weve noted previously that venture capitalists are increasingly turning toward AI to guide their investments into the hottest startups.

While Insilico awaits to see what big pharma company will emerge to take up its challenge, it has plenty of other partnerships and ventures to juggle. In fact, the company just announced today a new collaboration worth up to $200 million with one of Chinas biggest pharmaceutical companies, Jiangsu Chia Tai Fenghai Pharmaceutical Co. The goal of the collaboration is to accelerate drug discovery for triple-negative breast cancer using artificial intelligence.

We actually started making those kind of advanced partnerships where we would plan to take products into [clinical trials] only recently, Zhavoronkov said, for about the last year or so.

He noted that his company has about 16 ongoing collaborations, including several with one of the key players in the longevity industry Juvenescence. One of the more advanced joint ventures with Juvenescence is with a company called Generait Pharmaceuticals that is targeting senescent cells, which are cells that have stopped dividing but continue to secrete inflammatory molecules that damage nearby cells and tissues, leading to disease and an earlier death. Generait has already identified several disease targets but Zhavoronkov could not go into details at this time.

Another joint venture between Juvenescence and Insilico, which also includes the nonprofit Buck Institute for Research on Aging, is Napa Therapeutics. Insilico has already done its part and Napa is now working on several potential drug molecules that could help boost the levels of an oxidized compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is involved in getting the power plant of the cell called the mitochondria revved up again. So far, the molecules look very good, Zhavoronkov said.

Many [partnerships] are with smaller companies, you know, where we do get less money up front, but we do get the data, he noted. We need their pre-clinical data so we can train [our algorithms].

While Zhavoronkov is obviously pleased to have just pocketed $37 million from investors like Chinese AI tech giant Baidu and a pharmaceutical firm like Eli Lilly and Company, he feels that respect for the longevity industry is still lacking. For example, few of Insilicos major investors backed the company because they are specifically interested in life extension science, according to Zhavoronkov.

They invested not because of longevity. I actually need to divest of some of my longevity-focused programs, he explained. They invested because of the generative chemistry. It works; they know it works. Thats a major disruption. So thats why they invested. They didnt consider longevity; longevity is not being perceived as credible in financial circles yet.

Legitimacy is also difficult to build when there is so much hype around artificial intelligence.

There are lots and lots of scientific charlatans very often re-positioning very old technology as AI, he said. Suddenly, every statistician within big pharma became an AI scientist.

In terms of direct competitors, Zhavoronkov noted that he deeply respects the work being done by San Francisco-based Atomwise, but the technology from others is mostly smoke and mirrors. Thats why Insilico is focused on publishing its work in peer-reviewed journals in order to back up its claims. The company has published about 60 papers in the last five years.

Thats because Zhavoronkov believes that there is nothing more important than longevity, whether youre talking about the big-picture economics of healthcare or living more productive, healthier years in the twilight of life.

The goal is to create the longevity economy, he said. So, in the next couple years, as we ingest a little bit more data and develop more advanced algorithms, we will be able to go after more complex problems.

If the longevity industry does live up to its lofty goals of becoming the biggest industry in human history, Insilico Medicine will likely play a major role in that success. Even if we dont all end up living as old as Moses, the potential to cure some of humanitys most debilitating diseases is too good to ignore. And, right now, no one is ignoring Insilico Medicine.

Before this trend continues, let's agree on a common-sense rule suggested by Wiens: The life span of an expensive, resource-intensive gadget shouldn't be limited to the life span of one consumable component. You wouldn't buy an electric toothbrush where you couldn't replace the brush. Or a car with glued-on tires.

Apple kept fundamentally the same design for AirPods between its first- and second-generation of the headphones, which debuted in March. Now, the Apple rumor mill has lit up with hints of forthcoming third-generation AirPods in pre-release code for iOS 13.2.

Lets hope this time around, AirPods really are designed with the environment in mind. Not to mention our wallets.

The Li-ion technology is currently the best performing technology for energy storage based on batteries. Li-ion batteries are used in small electronics (smartphones, laptops etc) and are also the best options for electric cars.

In the 1970s as the world stared at oil crisis, Whittingham from Binghamton University in the US, American professor and solid-state physicist Goodenough (currently at the University of Texas at Austin) and Japanese chemist Yoshino advanced the development in the field through the 1980s.

Since Lithium is the lightest metal, using lithium ions made batteries lighter.

The lithium-ion batteries were launched commercially by Sony and Asahi Kasei Corporation in 1991.

Today, the race is on among the stakeholders to find a battery that can let users enjoy time on their devices without worrying about the charge.

Researchers from the University of Alberta recently developed a new battery technology that could provide 10 times more charge capacity compared to the lithium-ion power packs.

This battery technology utilizes silicon nanoparticles as an electrode for the lithium-ion batteries. Silicon is abundant, and the substance only costs around a third of the price of high-purity graphite, which sells for more than $10,000 per metric ton.

By adjusting the temperature of the battery pack, Tesla is able to ensure that cells are operating in their most efficient and optimal states, thereby maximizing battery longevity as well as performance.

It has been argued that lithium will be one of the main objects of geopolitical competition in a world running on renewable energy and dependent on batteries.

Current research areas for lithium-ion batteries include life extension, energy density, safety, cost reduction and charging speed, among others.

Research has also been under way in the area of non-flammable electrolytes as a pathway to increased safety based on the flammability and volatility of the organic solvents used in the typical electrolyte.

Eight Chromebooks in total will now receive software updates until June, 2025 rather than the original 2022 Auto Update Expiration date.

New Chromebooks come with a guarantee from Google of regular automatic updates for Chrome OS, but only for 6.5 years, and only for the underlying hardware platform. However, some Chromebooks are having their life extended by three years.

Purchasing a Chromebook may be cheaper than a laptop, but it will have an end-of-life date built in due to Google's Auto Update Expiration (AUE) 6.5 year time limit. Chromebooks will continue to work after their AUE, but won't get updates anymore or receive technical support. If you purchase a Chromebook the day it laucnhes then you get updates for 6.5 years, however, buying an older model means you may only get two or three years of updates.

What makes the situation more complicated is the fact Google attaches the AUE to the hardware platform rather than individual Chromebooks. So if a manufacturer uses Chromebook hardware that's a couple of years old in a new Chromebook, the AUE will be two years shorter. Google even advises manufacturers to always choose the newest platform so as to ensure the longest support.

As Chrome Unboxed reports, some Chromebooks now have a life extension courtesy of Google. There's eight in total, all except one are made by Lenovo. They include:

All eight Chromebooks were due to reach their AUE in June, 2022, but Google has extended the date so they will now continue to receive updates to June, 2025. The one caveat to continued support being that it relies on third-party component suppliers continuing to work with Google to support the devices for the next five years.

With the extended support in place, it makes these Chromebooks look a lot more attractive for anyone after a cheap, internet-focused laptop. For example, the Lenovo S330 is a 14-inch 1080p Chromebook with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for just $269.

We can only hope that this limited extension turns into a more general extension of the AUE for all hardware platforms. If Google could extend support to 10 years, then all Chromebooks would be much better value for money, even if you are buying a model that's a couple of years old.

WASHINGTON, D.C. For the next several years, the Coast Guards only heavy icebreaker will lead the annual Antarctic resupply mission as the service develops its new class of icebreaker.

Called the McMurdo Breakout, the Coast Guards heavy icebreaker, USCGCPolar Star (WAGB-10), starts the journey to Antarctica every year at the end of October or early November. Once there, Polar Star breaks a channel through the sea ice so resupply ships can reach McMurdo Station, the National Science Foundations 164-acre research facility perched on the volcanic Ross Island in the Ross Sea.

In about a week, Polar Star is expected to leave drydock in Vallejo, Calif., return to its homeport Seattle for some final preparations, then in about a month, depart for the McMurdo Breakout, Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Brickey, a Coast Guard spokesperson told USNI News.

Typically, the breakout involves a fuel ship and a container ship a lifeline arriving once a year with the material needed to keep the station and field research operating for the year, said Scot Arnold, a senior advisor for the National Science Foundations Office of Polar Programs. Arnold was speaking recently at the American Society of Naval Engineers Arctic Day 2019 conference.

The Polar Star, it clears a channel for the two ships, Arnold said. You have to have the heavy icebreaker there to clear ice. It can be up to a 70-mile channel.

When all turbines on Polar Star are running, the icebreaker is an incredible machine, said Capt. Michael Davanzo, the Coast Guards chief of Cutter Forces, at the Arctic Day conference. The problem with Polar Star is its more than 40 years old and a challenge to keep operational.

In April, the Coast Guard awarded the $745.9 million contract to build its first of three planned Polar Security Cutters, the new class of heavy icebreaker to replace Polar Star. The Coast Guard expects delivery of the first PSC in 2024.

With Polar Star, our goal is to keep the cutter running through the delivery of the second PSC and to do that we have to do a service life extension which we think will take three to five years, Davanzo said. We have to try to do without missing a mission down to Antarctica.

Weather conditions in Antarctica and the expense of sending ships to the bottom of the world give the Coast Guard and the National Science Founding one chance at making the annual resupply mission. The McMurdo Breakout is timed for the height of the Antarctic summer at the end of December when high temperatures barely rise above freezing, but the sea ice can be broken, Arnold said.

The fuel tanker arrives with close to 10 million gallons of a special fuel mixture designed for use in Antarctica. The container ship arrives with bulk goods such as food, scientific equipment, vehicles and other material.

This year, and for several more, the container ship will also deliver the construction material used to build a massive new $355 million research facility that will fold the activities performed in 104 buildings into a condensed campus of six main structures, Arnold said.

Called the Antarctica Infrastructure Modernization for Science project, work is starting now and is expected to finish in 2026. Weather conditions limit the construction season to between October and April. Then the long, frigid Antarctic night sets in, halting outside work.

Antarcticas weather conditions also create a logistics challenge for such a large construction project. With supplies arriving once a year, in the middle of the construction season, Arnold said builders have to collect supplies a year ahead.

Were collecting materials now for the 20 season. Theyll be put on a ship and delivered to Antarctica in January, Arnold said.

Without the Coast Guards heavy ice breaker, though, these supplies cant reach McMurdo station, which would severely delay the carefully timed build. As sections of the new facility are built, work will migrate into the new structure. Crews will then demolish older structures, which in some cases are standing in the way of the projects final sections.

Once the materials arrive, the builders only have enough time to unload the ships and move most of the material to a storage field. When the construction season ends in April, the team will start sorting and prepping next years building supplies.

It gets off-loaded then dumped because we dont have the space to go through everything nor the manpower, so it all goes to a central receiving field, he said.

When finished, the new McMurdo station will save the National Science Foundation millions of dollars in operations and maintenance costs while also improving the living and working conditions for staff, with a relatively open and flexible floorplan to accommodate future research projects, Arnold said.

Its basically taking our old facilities, which have been around, in some cases since the fifties, from what really represents more of an expeditionary type construction, and bringing it into the future, for the next 50 years, Arnold said.

The idea of paying a company hundreds of thousands of dollars to freeze your body or brain in the hope that they will one day bring you back to life initially may seem farcical.

The mere fact that this notion has featured in several movies and television shows suggests this is make-believe, something that would probably not happen in real life.

Who could forget that fantastic scene from Austin Powers when doctors successfully thaw out Mike Myers so that he can live in another era?

Well, this is no movie. And no joke.

And interestingly, Alcor CEO Max More isn't bothered by cryonics being trivialised for entertainment.

"I don't think it stigmatises it, I think it actually makes it seem more plausible," More says when I asked him about this at his Arizona Headquarters.

He shares the building with about 170 frozen bodies and brains all suspended upside down in liquid nitrogen-filled vats.

As I walked through the room where all these cryopreserved people are, it feels eerie and weird, quite frankly.

But there are more than 1250 Alcor members who've signed up for the same fate from all over the world Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Portugal, the UK, the US, Italy, Israel and more.

These members all have the choice of freezing their whole body for about A$300,000 or just their brain for A$118,000.

That is, needless to say, a lot of cash to hand over for a service the company can't even promise will eventuate.

"There's no guarantee but it seems like it's worth a shot," More says.

Alcor founder Linda Chamberlain explains that members sign a nine-page consent form.

"We tell people everything that could possibly go wrong and that's extremely important because what we are doing is still experimental and people need to know that," she says.

"The Alcor Life Extension Foundation is the world leader in cryonics, cryonics research, and cryonics technology," their website reads.

"Cryonics is the practice of using ultra-cold temperature to preserve a human body with the intent of restoring good health when the technology becomes available to do so."

The hope or as they prefer to call it, "probability" is that one day science will have been developed that is capable of reviving frozen patients.

They would come back to life as the same person, with the same DNA.

I was wildly sceptical about this upon arriving at their Scottsdale building in the hot desert of Arizona.

I was worried members may be vulnerable to handing over thousands of dollars on false promises.

But it was quickly evident that those running this business whole-heartedly believe the plausibility of cryonics recreating life in the future.

The reality is not many people can afford to become a member and embark on such a thing.

But, if you were a millionaire, even if you thought this was questionable, what have you got to lose? When you're dead, you're dead.

Or are you? That's the question.

Even the masterminds behind this concept don't have the answer. Hence the consent form.

The House Science, Space and Technology Committee said it is drafting its own nuclear energy bill, which two people familiar with the matter said will imperil passage of the Nuclear Energy Leadership Act in its current form. But people in talks with the committee say that it is likely to draw heavily from the premier advanced nuclear energy legislation in Congress.

House Science Committee majority staff said in an email Thursday that the committee is still in the process of drafting its legislation. Our bill wont be identical to NELA, but we expect it will comprehensively authorize and guide DOE nuclear energy R&D activities, the committee staff said.

Jeremy Harrell, managing director of policy at the conservative energy nonprofit ClearPath, said the science committees move does not necessarily extend the timeline or complicate passage of much of NELA, which would call on the federal government to establish a 10-year national strategy for nuclear energy and to demonstrate multiple advanced nuclear reactor concepts over the next several years, among other things.

He said the committee appears supportive of NELAs reactor demonstrations provision, for example, through which the Energy Department would need to demonstrate between four and seven advanced nuclear reactor designs by the end of 2035.

I think when push comes to shove, Science and Tech wants to make sure that they have their own bill within their circuit, Harrell said. Theyve got their own ideas; theyre not going to just take something from Lisa Murkowski, the Alaska lawmaker who chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and sponsored the bill in the Senate.

Science moving forward with its own bill means that another vehicle will need to be found to enact an industry-favored provision of NELA to extend the federal power purchase agreement length from 10 to 40 years for nuclear, since the provision falls outside the committees jurisdiction.

I cannot envision any legislation on power purchase agreements coming out of the House any time soon, said a person familiar with the matter, who said there has been no sign from Energy and Commerce that they intend to work on power purchase agreement legislation.

The person, who said the plan appears for the committee to circulate a working draft of the bill to stakeholders before Thanksgiving, said that the science panel is considering including some language on high-assay low-enriched uranium fuel which multiple advanced reactors would require to operate from NELA as well as from the McNerney-Flores HALEU bill that recently passed the House.

The House Science measure, which is intended to lie under the panels sole jurisdiction, means that movement on NELA in the House is now more unlikely, according to two people familiar with the developments.

Alyse Huffman, the committees American Nuclear Society Glenn T. Seaborg congressional fellow, is the lead author of the new legislation. It remains unclear whether the panels nuclear bill will be folded into a broader energy package out of the committee.

In a brief interview Friday morning, House Science EnergySubcommittee Chairman Conor Lamb (D-Pa.) said the committee is considering a possible parallel to the Senate version of NELA, while somewhat separately considering legislation for advanced nuclear research in areas such as the national labs and ARPA-E program. He did not yet have a sense of when the committees legislation might come out and said that talks were ongoing with House Science Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas).

Were looking at things for life extension of the existing plants, which is important, Lamb added, as NELA instead focuses on newer reactor concepts.

It is not yet clear whether the House Energy and Commerce Committee will take separate action on NELA. The bill has also been referred to the House Armed Services and Oversight and Reform committees.

The only thing Im aware of is the positive news that Representative Clyburn is very interested in advancing it, Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.) said in a brief interview Friday morning, referring to the Democratic representative from South Carolina. Luria introduced NELA in the House on June 18. Were working with his staff to help that happen.

Lamb said Luria had asked him to champion NELA within the science committee.

An Energy and Commerce Committee spokesperson said in an email Friday that there have been staff-level conversations between it, Luria and others.

David Blee, chief executive of the U.S. Nuclear Industry Council, cautioned that NELA has not yet passed the Senate a difficult feat in the current political climate.

Harrell said that the current expectation is that senators will try to pass NELA as part of a larger energy package, with potential floor time in January or February.

Blee said that the preference is usually to have it as part of a package, since both parties want action across the energy and environmental space, and the House will likely want balancing legislation for renewables and other energy sources if it moves on a nuclear bill.

To the extent the House Science panel comes up with that recipe, thats helpful, Blee added.

Even if NELAs provisions are not enactedquickly, there are promising signs from the Senate that bolstering federal support and development of advanced nuclear technologies is a priority. The Senate Energy and Water appropriations subcommittee, led by NELA co-sponsor Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), has slated key funding for provisions within NELA without cutting other federal nuclear energy R&D efforts, as had been feared. Harrell said the House is also likely to be supportive of nuclear energy funding.

But a lot remains up in the air on the budget and appropriationsas a whole, and it remains useful to pass legislation authorizing the provisions of NELA outright, said Harrell, especially since the demonstration portion runs through 2035.

We think its critical that were demonstrating new technologies in that time frame, Harrell said. Otherwise, nuclears going to get left behind.

Its an exciting time for queer readers: Although we have a long way to go toward diversifying the publishing industry, more of our stories are being given space to be told. Here are some highlights coming up.

Elissa Altman, Motherland(Ballantine, 8/6)

Elissa Altman is the author of two previous memoirs, including Poor Mans Feast: A Love Story of Comfort, Desire, and the Art of Simple Cooking, born of her James Beard Award-winning blog of the same name. In this new memoir, Altman explores her codependent relationship with her mother, a glamorous Manhattan singer named Rita. Kimberly King Parsons, Black Light (Vintage, 8/13)

If you pay attention to best-of book lists, Black Light has probably come across your radar.The prose in this debut short-story collection is richly detailed in describing both the characterswho are weird, flawed, and so humanand the settings theyre in; its lyricism feels like a delicate dance and a gut-punch at once. The book isnt marketed as queer, but there is a lot of queer content here; Parsons is particularly strong in writing about the complicated intimacies between teenage girls.

Carolina de Robertis, Cantoras (Knopf, 9/3)

The new novel from the author of The Gods of Tango (which also features a protagonist who explores their fluid gender and sexuality), Cantoras begins in 1970s Uruguay as five young queer women come together on an island for a getaway. Over the course of about 40 years, it follows their lives together and apart, including under the Uruguayan dictatorship during the 70s and early 80s. This is another multi character-driven epic, both painful and beautiful to read, with vivid prose. Also, it has one of the best opening paragraphs this reviewer has seen in a while.

Carley Moore, The Not Wives (Feminist Press, 9/10)

In this debut novel, Carley Moore (author of the essay collection 16 Pills) transports the reader right into the heart of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Brimming with details that will bring anyone who remembers the early 2010s right back to that era (from fashion, to the way people talked about politics and queerness), this story follows a sprawling cast of characters, almost all of whom are queer: the protagonist, Stevie, her young daughter Sasha, her friends Mel and Jenny, a young runaway named Johanna, and a number of others. Moore deftly captures the atmosphere of Zuccotti Park as well as the political atmosphere around the movement, which spurred people all over the world to renew discussions about class, race, gender, and social structures.

Gabby Rivera, Juliet Takes a Breath (Penguin Teen re-release, 9/19)

This debut novel from Gabby Riverawho also wrote Marvels Americawas originally published in 2016. An instant queer YA classic, it is now getting the wide distribution it deserves with a reprint from Penguin Teen. It follows maybe one of the best characters ever written, Juliet Milagros Palante, a young queer Latinx woman from the Bronx who spends a summer interning for fictional white feminist icon author Harlowe Brisbane in Portland, Oregon. The ways in which Juliet grapples with coming out, unlearning colonialist and white supremacist ideas, and discovering her own values give this novel teeth. But the real joy of this story is Juliet herself, a character whose self-doubt is rivaled by her self-confidence; whose big heart and book-nerd brain envelop the reader; and whose relationships with the fascinating characters around her make for one of this falls most satisfying reads.

Jacqueline Woodson, Red at the Bone (Riverhead, 9/17)

Jaqueline Woodson is an award-winning author of many YA novels, including Another Brooklyn and Brown Girl Dreaming. Shes now bringing her signature spare and poetic prose to this adult novel set in Brooklyn. The book opens with the seemingly lighthearted scene of 16-year-old Melodys coming-of-age ceremony, which happens to the orchestral tunes of Prince. From there, the story moves back and forth in time, spanning the events faced by three generations of Melodys family. Red at the Bone has one explicitly queer character, but isnt really about being queer. In that way, its a beautiful example of queerness being a part of everyday life, in families and friendships. The book touches on class, gender, sexuality, age, race in the United Statesall within a tender story of love in its many forms. Its a perfect one- or two-sitting read for a crisp fall day, one that will stay with you long after its over.

Jeanette Winterson, Frankissstein (Grove Atlantic, 10/1)

Jeanette Winterson is well-known to many queer readers from her prolific work, notably Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Written on the Body, The Passion, and Why Be Happy When You Can Be Normal? Her latest novel delivers a reinterpretation of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. Multiple Frankensteins are being produced and experimented with in this novel:Shelley is creating her novel in the fictionalized chapters about her; scientist Victor Stein is creating an AI in the very near future, while trans nonbinary scientist Ry is falling in love with him; a creepy foundation in Arizona called Alcor Life Extension is scheming to create live humans from body parts; and a man named Ron Lord is creating the next generation of sex dolls. Its a wacky ride about what it means to be human and what it means to be alive, and it will not disappoint Winterson fans.

Natalie Daz & Hannah Ensor, eds., Bodies Built for Game (University of Nebraska Press, 10/1)

You might recognize Natalie Dazname from her professional basketball career, or her poetry collection When My Brother Was an Aztec (shes also got one forthcoming in March called Postcolonial Love Poem); and Hannah Ensors from her collection Love Dream With Television or her recent Lambda Literary 2019 Judith A. Markowitz Award for Emerging Writers win. But if you dont, rest assured that they are a dream team for bringing together this unique and innovative anthology of sports writing. With an array of writers (including Danez Smith, Fatimah Asghar, and Hanif Abdurraqib, among others), this book picks apart the meaning of sport from the perspective of people who are not cis straight white men. From participation in sports (team or otherwise) to sports fandom; from analyzing the metaphor of sport to examining modern sports oppressive, exploitative, and colonialist roots; from exploring the intersections of identity (including gender and sexuality) and sports to grappling with the corporeal demands of athletics; his anthology breaks all kinds of barriers. And although it includes essay, fiction, and creative nonfiction, the book centers poetry as the dominant form, which is unusual for sports anthologies. This is definitely a must-read before that NFL game on Thanksgiving Day.

Edie Windsor and Joshua Lyon, A Wild and Precious Life (St. Martins, 10/8)

Edie Windsors case against the United States led to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned the Defense of Marriage Act. This, in turn,paved the way for Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized marriage equality nationwide in 2015. But Windsor was more than these headlines, and more than her constant presence at rallies and protests. This memoir, begun by Windsor and completed by her co-writer Joshua Lyon after her death in 2017, chronicles her life beginning with her childhood in Philadelphia and moving through her young adulthood in 1950s Greenwich Village, her life with her partner of 44 years, Thea Spyer, and her fascinating rise in the ranks of computing at IBM. Windsor was a queer woman who believed in her right to take up space and be seen, which makes for an uplifting and inspiring story in which Lyons does an excellent job of making sure Windsors stirring and joyful voice shines through.

Jaquira Daz, Ordinary Girls (Algonquin, 10/29)

Every once in a while a truly electric debut memoir comes along, and this fall, Ordinary Girls is it. As a young person, Dazlife was upended many times by physical and emotional violence. Longing for family and sometimes finding itin her sister, her grandmother, her friendsDaz writes her story in a musical prose that plays with future and past tense, putting the reader in the narrators shoes as she navigates unreliable memories and unknown futures. Daz narrative starts in Puerto Rico, goes to Miami Beach, into schools and juvenile detention centers, into stronger-than-blood relationships with friends, lovers and family; it goes into the navy, into familial legacy and colonial history. Its the story of an ordinary girl; its the story of all of the extraordinary girls. Daz is a skilled writer who strongly layers micro details with the macro structures of identity, white supremacy, colonialism, and brown, queer, and femme resilience and resistance.

Cyrus Grace Dunham, A Year Without a Name (Little, Brown, 10/15)

A Year Without a Name, an honest account of one persons journey with gender, identity, and mental illness, is Cyrus Grace Dunhams snapshot of a recent two-year span in which they become a changing adult in a changing world. Its a quick read, but punchynearly every sentence is sharp, full of importance, at once deeply intellectual and ethereal. Dunham navigates how confusing gender is: how useless it can be while also existing as an essential facet of identity. Theyre extremely self-aware, which at times feels like more of a burden than a gift. Dunham stays true to their unfinished story by packing a lot of meaning into just 176 pages but never reaching concrete conclusions. But the concrete would be antithetical to the story; Dunham lives in the truth that all of us are unfinished, forever growing and learning. This in itself is a very queer frame of thought.

Carmen Maria Machado, In the Dream House (Graywolf, 11/5)

Carmen Maria Machado became everyones gay aunt, thank goodness, when she Mary Poppinsd into our hearts with her genre-bending, brutal, gorgeous, queer, wild debut story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, in 2017. Her debut memoir, In The Dream House, is a firecracker of a follow-upa story that is as scary as it is playful, as intellectual as it is emotional, as personal as it is universal. Its the story of Machados relationship with an abusive partner and how it, along with her upbringing and beliefs imposed by society, affected her growth as a person. It brings to the page something that is sorely lacking in mainstream literature: the reality of abuse in queer relationships, especially lesbian ones. Machado uses her characteristic wit and fearlessness to shed light on love, terror, history, culture, narrative structure, and representation from multiple angles. Its a must-read, haunting story for the dark months ahead.

Tommy Pico, Feed (Tin House, 11/5)

The final installment of Tommy Picos Teebs tetrology (preceeded by IRL, Nature Poem, and Junk), this collection from the superstar queer Indigenous writer-hero returns us to the character of Teebs, a kind of alter-ego. Like his previous volumes, Feed is full of irreverent humor, razor-sharp stanzas, and stream-of-consciousness philosophy. Pico explores uncertainty and seasonality, the horror and ubiquity of todays headlines, friendship and dating, food and aliens, and of course, a few signature dick jokes. Nothing is quite like the experience of reading Picos workits a simultaneously heady and grounding adventure.
