Federal Government threatens to build gas plant if electricity sector doesn’t replace retiring coal-fired power stations – ABC News

The Federal Government is threatening to build a gas power plant in New South Wales if the electricity sector does not commit to replacing coal-fired power stations that are being retired.

With the coal-fired Liddell Power Station in the Hunter Valley due to shut down in 2023, the Federal Government is worried there will not be enough dispatchable power, given the sector's focus on building wind and solar farms.

The Federal Government will demand electricity generators come up with a plan for 1,000 megawatts of new dispatchable energy in time for the end of 2023.

If it is not satisfied with the private sector's commitments by the end of April next year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison is vowing to intervene directly in the market.

"We won't risk the affordability and reliability of the NSW energy system and will step in unless the industry steps up," Mr Morrison said.

The Federal Government has tasked Snowy Hydro Limited with drawing up plans for a gas generator in the Hunter Valley at Kurri Kurri.

The Federal Government's National COVID Coordination Commission has a lot of gas industry players involved, and it appears to be showing in its policy recommendations.

Mr Morrison will press the Government's case for more non-renewable power generation in a speech to business and industry in Newcastle on Tuesday.

Energy Minister Angus Taylor said the market needed to focus on new, dispatchable power, arguing current plans fall "far short of what is required".

"Over the last decade, the private sector has not built a single new reliable power plant in NSW," Mr Taylor said.

"The Government has always been clear we need to see life extension or like-for-like replacement of Liddell.

"If industry steps up, we'll step back."

The potential for a taxpayer-backed, gas-fired power plant comes as the Federal Government turns its eye to the troubled gas market.

The east coast gas market has boomed under the development of Queensland's coal seam gas fields over the last decade.

But while that has made for a profitable liquefied natural gas export market, Australian commercial and industrial gas users have continued to pay high prices.

The Federal Government will announce a sweep of measures aimed at addressing that imbalance, including:

The Federal Government is promoting the initiatives as moves that will both lower gas prices and create jobs.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has long raised concerns that local commercial and industrial users are paying more for gas than exporters are selling it for on international markets.

A domestic gas reservation policy has not been ruled out, nor has building terminals for importing gas.

The Government's focus on gas is expected to draw the ire of the renewable energy sector and environmental groups, which point to significant improvement in the capacity of wind and solar power to support the nation's electricity needs.

North East engineering company investing in future growth with move to 120000sq ft CA Parsons Works site in Newcastle – OilVoice

Electromechanical engineering specialist Houghton International has agreed a game-changing deal with Siemens Energy which will see it take over the former blade manufacturing factory at the birthplace of the steam turbine, the CA Parsons Works in Heaton.

The 120,000sqft of world-class engineering space will be used to consolidate five of the company's operational sites alongside its existing pump repair facility currently housed on the site, also creating significant room for further growth. The move represents a massive milestone for the company, which has experienced rapid growth over the past five years and will create a best in class facility from which to service its growing domestic and international customer base.

Positioning itself for future growth in emerging markets, the company also intends to retain its large machine facility on Shields Road adjacent to new workshop to service an increased demand for larger repairs from around the UK, providing a total combined footprint over 135,000sqft.

In a further coup, the factory will be named The Ronnie Mitten Works after one of the company's founders, Ron Mitten, who's technical legacy still brings work into the business each day, well over a decade after he sadly passed away in 2007.

Ron Mitten's son, Michael Mitten, the current CEO of Houghton International, said: I am truly delighted and equally honoured to be taking over such a prestigious site, and to be allowed to hoist my dad's name above the door really is the cherry on the cake for me. I want to thank the team at Siemens Energy for having the confidence in us to take on the site and allowing us to name it after my dad. He'd be blown away by the notion that his name will be sat alongside that of Charles Parsons.

I'm also delighted to be able to announce such an exciting phase in the company's development, and some positive news for the North East. It's a massive deal for us, one that cements our home for the next 25 years, and gives us one of the largest rotating electrical machine service centres in Western Europe. Now we need to fill it up with work. We envisage that we will be creating new jobs very soon, and will need great people to help us achieve our mission to be the best in the world at what we do.

The expansion is a huge opportunity for Houghton International and is the result of many years of hard work to grow the business, our workforce and our customer base to get to this point. To do so at such a critical economic time means we'll be perfect placed to take full advantage of the post-Covid economic boom that I'm certain will happen, especially in renewable energy and the shift towards the electrification of mass transportation.

The consolidation will improve efficiency across the business, offer greater opportunities for training and cross skilling staff, enable us to adapt to changing market conditions faster and further improve the service we offer to customers.

This is a huge step change for the business and the investment we are making now will further support Houghton International's reputation as a market leader regionally, nationally and internationally.

The move into the new site is currently underway with the aim of having the whole business relocated by the end of the year. Alongside providing extra space for Covid-19 physical distancing, the additional capacity created by the move will also enable the company to create dedicated R&D and training facilities, further investing in the future.

Specialising in the monitoring, maintenance, repair and life extension of electromechanical assets around the world, Houghton International operates across a range of sectors including power generation, water, oil & gas, rail and industrial and manufacturing. The company has grown incrementally over the past 36 years.

Currently owned by Siemens Energy, the CA Parsons Works work site has been home to world class engineering since the start of the 20th century. Being co-located on the site alongside Siemens Energy presents an excellent opportunity for ongoing collaboration between two complementary companies to reinvest in the vacant facility and continue its strong heritage into the future.

Are Costs the Sole Reason Behind Boeing’s Loss to Northrop? – Yahoo Finance

The U.S. Air Force has selected Northrop Grumman Corp. NOC as its company of choice for replacing the nations aging intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system. Consequently, Northrop secured a $13.3 billion deal for performing the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) phase of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) program.

Notably, Boeings BA Minuteman II ICBM was thus far the United States chosen land-based nuclear deterrent.

Northrop won the EMD award for GBSD program after completing a highly successful three-year technology maturation and risk reduction (TMRR) phase-one effort as part of the competition. Notably, the team of highly-experienced defense majors involved in the GBSD program, including Lockheed LMT, Textron TXT and L3Harris Technologies LHX, has achieved all TMRR design review milestones on time and on cost.

Moreover, per USSTRATCOMs Statement to Congress, the GBSD Analysis of Alternatives provided decisive analysis that continued life extension of the Minuteman III will be more costly than a replacement system. Also, as more modern deterrent systems become the need of the hour, the existing Minuteman II might not address future challenges and threats to the nations current ICBM force.

While the Minuteman has served as the backbone of the nations ICBM force since 1962, its aging infrastructure, and asset attrition require a comprehensive weapon system replacement beginning in 2028. While this heightened the need for replacement, the U.S. Air Force has remained focused on sustaining its ICBM force at the lowest reasonable cost.

So the cost-effectiveness of the GBSD program along with its state-of-the-art features must have persuaded the U.S. Air Force to choose it as the next nuclear deterrent of the country.

Boeing walked out of this ICBM-replacement competition in December 2019, citing lack of cost competitiveness, as stated by a Reuters report. This was because the jet giant felt it to be difficult to submit a bid for the competition, wherein the cost of replacement was being set at $85 billion by the Pentagons Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation office.

In fact, in a letter to the U.S. Air Force, chief executive of Boeing Defense Space and Security, Leanne Caret said that Northrops Orbital ATK takeover in 2018, which strengthened the companys missile portfolio, might have boosted Northrops cost competitiveness compared to Boeings.

While Northrops Orbital ATK acquisition did boost the company to offer its GBSD program at a cost efficient level, lets not forget the fact that Boeing has already been suffering a cash crunch, following the grounding of its 737 Max fleet since March 2019.

Notably, Boeings operating cash outflow was $2.45 billion at the end of 2019 against cash inflow of $15.32 billion at the end of 2018. Its free cash outflow totaled $4.28 billion at 2019 end against cash inflow of$13.60 billion at the end of 2018. So, by December, when the final bid for the ICBM replacement competition was supposed to be submitted by Boeing, its management had a pretty good picture at hand about the companys weak cash position.

Thus, the impact that 737 grounding had on Boeings cash reserve might have also influenced the companys decision to walk out of the bid.

Pringles Minis’ Shelf Life Is Now 11 Months From The Date Of Production – Planet Vending

Pringles Minis Shelf Life: Its fair to say that few product launches in recent years have matched Pringles Minis for impact in the vending sector, writes PV Editor Ian Reynolds-Young. Expectations were high when the introductory announcement was made seven months ago and then in February, when we reported on the initial sales of the product and ARNs Lyndsey Boutflour told us, we have already taken pre-orders for 4,218 cases for Pringles Minis Original and Sour Cream & Onion.

The product was selling through as quickly as it was selling out. Jane McDonald of Excel Vending said, the reaction to Pringles Minis was astonishing. We generated over 1,000 comments on Facebook and around 600 on Twitter in the first 12 hours after going live! I think the success is a good measure of Pringles popularity and the appetite consumers have for the brand-new Pringles Minis.

It was as though Minis Mania had descended on the UK. All was set fair for Kelloggs crowd-pleaser to break any sales record you could name. And then Well, we all know what happened in March.

In May, I asked a vending operator friend of mine how bad things really were and he told me, its not the end of the world, but we can see it from here.

Slowly more slowly than the government would like people are returning to work. Fingers crossed; offices, factories and schools will emerge from isolation in the coming weeks and transport hubs will once again be busy.

But nothing is for sure, nothing is nailed on. Operators and indeed, wholesaler Automatic Retailing Northern, (ARN) are understandably wary of over stocking products, when there remains a danger that Best Before dates will expire. Whilst it may be some time before Pringles Minis delivers the level of sales through vendings favourite wholesaler that it achieved in Q1, the news that, after an exhaustive series of tests, Pringles Minis Shelf Life is now 11 months from the date of production, should give buyers a much-needed confidence boost as they consider their orders.

Well take any good news right now, Lyndsey told us. Pringles Minis already had the edge on the traditional crisps brands with 9 months of shelf life, so with Pringles Minis Shelf Life extended for an extra couple of months its as though the insurance policy has been improved. Sales in Q1 were out of this world but those numbers seem irrelevant now. We see Pringles Minis as one of the products that will bring consumers back to vending machines and kick-start the industry

As the gradual return to work or education continues, the one thing we can be sure of is that, however difficult the circumstance may be, consumers will once again make their favourite drinks and snacks part of their day; and Pringles Minis Shelf Life extension gives operators a welcome additional safety net in trying times.

Northrop’s ‘life extension’ spacecraft heads to the rescue – UPI News

Sept. 11 (UPI) -- A second spacecraft designed by Northrop Grumman to extend the life of satellites in orbit is headed toward a rescue some 22,200 miles above Earth.

The spacecraft is part of Northrop's new in-orbit services. Analysts and observers predict such services will grow into a multibillion-dollar market over the next 10 years.

Northrop is the first commercial service to enable private space companies to extend the life of large, expensive satellites past their life expectancy as designed.

"Satellite operators have few options when a satellite is aging, and they are all expensive [options]," said Joe Anderson, a vice president with Northrop subsidiary SpaceLogistics based in Dulles, Va.

The company's rescue satellite, Mission Extension Vehicle-2, or MEV-2, was launched Aug. 15 from the European Space Agency's Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, South America.

The launch began a seven-month journey to a rendezvous with a communication satellite, Intelsat 10-02. Sent aloft in 2004, the satellite provides service to customers of for Intelsat Corp., whose administrative center is in McLean, Va.

Once it clamps onto the Intelsat, the MEV will become a new engine for the satellite, which is running low on fuel. The Northrop spacecraft will keep the satellite in the proper orbit and pointed toward Earth, Anderson said.

The first MEV spacecraft, launched in October 2019, is operating successfully as a new, supplemental engine for another Intelsat satellite, Intelsat 901, which was launched in 2001, according to Northrop and Intelsat.

That satellite reached the end of its lifespan and had been moved to the so-called graveyard orbit, which is about 300 miles higher than any functional satellites.

The incentive to rescue such large communications satellites is their high cost -- between $150 million and $300 million, Anderson said.

While he declined to reveal the cost of Northrop's MEV units, Anderson said the company intends to sell in-orbit services at a price that is attractive to satellite companies.

Intelsat previously reported in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it would pay about $13 million per year, or $65 million for five years, for MEV-1.

If a company can put off the cost to build and launch a new satellite for five years, it can invest that money in other projects, making the life-extension service a valuable route, Anderson said.

Northrop will own and operate the MEV craft through SpaceLogistics. After the five-year missions for Intelsat, the MEV units can extend their work or move to other missions, Anderson said.

The MEVs are powered by electric engines energized by solar panels to raise their own orbit and control the Intelsat satellites, along with hydrazine chemical propulsion to rendezvous with their target satellites, Anderson said.

The electric thrusters are considered more efficient for such orbital missions, but they take longer to reach high orbit than bigger chemical propulsion engines.

Despite the success of MEV missions, Northrop won't build more similar satellites, but rather develop a new version with more capabilities. It will be known as a Mission Robotic Vehicle, or MRV, Anderson said.

The MRV would carry several life extension "pods" -- small electric engines that can be dispersed among multiple satellites per mission, Anderson said. He said Northrop believes that will boost the cost efficiency of each mission.

Northrop also will design the robotic mothership, the MRV, to inspect satellites and possibly conduct limited repairs, providing more value, he said.

Such expanded robotic spacecraft could be valuable to Intelsat, as well, said Jean-Luc Froeliger, vice president of its space systems engineering operations.

"We are definitely interested in the robotic vehicle under development, although nothing is signed yet," Froeliger said. "We're making revenue from the MEV life extension already, but in the long term, MEV doesn't make sense financially."

The robotic version, MRV, should be more fiscally attractive if it can extend the life of multiple Intelsat satellites for each launch, he said.

"We got the rebate of being the first customer to help get the program started," Froeliger said. "I don't think, long term, it makes good financial business for Northrop or for us to make more MEVs. If it was, we'd have signed up for 10 more."

Extending the life of multiple satellites with one MRV could address Intelsat's aging fleet of 51 operational satellites more efficiently, Froeliger added. That's because it will carry multiple engines -- or pods -- that can be dispersed and attached to multiple Intelsat satellites per mission, not just one.

"Life extension of our satellites is just one more tool in our toolbox to handle our fleet," he said.

Such life extension missions haven't been available in the private sector before, said Dallas Kasaboski, an analyst with Northern Sky Research, based in Cambridge, Mass.

"Governments have repaired or repositioned spacecraft in space for decades, but these Northrop missions are the first truly commercial in-orbit missions of their kind," Kasaboski said.

Spacecraft that extend the life of satellites are just one part of an emerging sector in commercial space known as in-orbit services, Kasaboski said.

The commercial market for such in-orbit services should generate about $3.1 billion over the next decade, based on an analysis his firm released in February.

Many other types of in-orbit services are expected in the coming years, he said.

Those services include "relocation, or repair, especially as governments grapple with the problem of space trash and thousands of new satellites being launched," Kasaboski said.

Although growth is likely for all in-orbit services, life extension itself may remain only a small niche market for years, said Joel Sercel, a technology entrepreneur and founder of Trans Astronautica Corp., a startup based in the Los Angeles area.

"Life extension for satellites might make sense for large communication satellites, an exquisite spy satellite, or a billion-dollar space telescope, but it could be too expensive for smaller satellites," Sercel said.

Husky review of $2.2B West White Rose a plea for government help, analyst says – Daily Commercial News

ST. JOHNS, N.L. An announced review by Husky Energy Inc. of its $2.2-billion West White Rose project off the coast of Newfoundland could be interpreted as a call for the province to take an equity stake to ensure it is built, an analyst says.

Under a worst-case scenario, it could also signal the Calgary-based companys option to eventually shut down or sell the currently producing White Rose offshore oil project itself, added analyst Phil Skolnick of Eight Capital in a report.

Constructionon the project expected to produce up to 75,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) was suspended in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic and Huskys refocusing of priorities because of the global economic downturn and low oil prices.

A full review of scope, schedule and cost of this project is critical, given the minimum one-year delay to first oil caused by COVID-19, and our priority of maintaining the strength of our balance sheet with ample liquidity, said Husky CEO Rob Peabody in a news release on Sept. 9.

Unfortunately, the delay caused by COVID-19 and continued market uncertainty leaves us no choice but to undertake a full review of the project and, by extension, our future operations in Atlantic Canada.

The West White Rose project is about 60 per cent complete, with about $1.1 billion in work left to be done in Newfoundland and Labrador and an expected $11 billion in future capital and operating expenditures over its life, Husky said.

We fully appreciate that this project represents billions in government taxes and other anticipated public benefits. Without it, these will not materialize, Peabody said in the release.

It states Husky has discussed the projects challenges and risks with the provincial and federal governments and has proposed ideas designed to protect jobs and the economic benefits the project will deliver.

We need to find a solution now, Peabody added.

Husky is the operator of the White Rose field and satellite extensions, which are located in the Jeanne dArc Basin approximately 350 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland and have been producing oil since 2005.

Huskys recent messages concerning next years capital plans suggest cutting debt is taking priority over funding West White Roseconstruction, Skolnick said.

Essentially, we believe that HSE is messaging to the Newfoundland and Labrador government that given the importance that this project has on tax revenues and associated employment, if the government wants to take on a working interest to help put certainty intoconstruction, the company is open to negotiating that, he said.

He added that if the new project doesnt go ahead, it raises questions about asset life extension projects on the SeaRose FPSO (floating production storage and offloading) unit, which is to be used at West White Rose.

If Husky decides those projects arent worthwhile to preserve the 20,000 bpd it currently gets from its share of the existing project, it could lead to a scenario where it attempts to sell or shuts down the project entirely in 2022, he said.

Newfoundland and Labrador is the third-largest oil producer in Canada and its offshore oil industry has been hit hard by crashing global oil prices.

In mid-March, Equinor and Husky announced an indefinite deferral of the Bay du Nord project, slated to be the provinces first deepwater operation.

Drilling on the Hibernia platform was suspended in April, as was a refit for the Terra Nova floating production storage and offloading vessel.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has been imploring Ottawa to help the sector out, even holding a news conference in late May to appeal for federal aid.

West White Rose is expected to create about 250 full-time platform jobs.

Husky has a 60 per cent working interest, which would result in net output of up to 52,500 barrels per day if the project is completed.

Due to the short offshore weather window needed forconstruction, the suspension in March meant that West White Rose is delayed for at least a year.

Saab Makes New Gripen Fighter Offer to Croatia – Aviation International News

Saab has submitted a formal proposal for 12 new-build Gripen C/D multi-role fighters to Croatia. The proposal is a government-to-government deal, and was handed over on September 9 by representatives from Swedens FMV (defense material administration)and the countrys embassy in Zagreb. The proposal also includes a parallel strategic cooperation package that is tailored to the development of Croatian industrial and technological capability.

Sweden and Saab are offering a comprehensive and long-term solution for Croatian homeland security thatwill protect Croatias people and borders for decades to come, said Jonas Hjelm, the head of Saabs Aeronautics business area.If Croatia chooses Gripen, Saab is ready to transfer know-how and technology and establish a Regional Aeronautical and Support Service Centre in Croatia. This would develop long-term cooperation with local defense industry as well as the academic sector, generating some 500 high-tech jobs.

Since the late 2000s Croatia has been seeking a Western fighter to replace its fleet of 20 aging MiG-21bis/UMs. Half of the fleet underwent a limited life extension in Romania in the early 2000s. From 2013 seven of them subsequently received further refurbishment and basic NATO compatibility upgrades in Ukraine, which also supplied five additional aircraft to a similar standard from its own stocks. Comprising eight MiG-21bis and four MiG-21UMs, the survivors operate from Zagreb-Pleso with the Croatian air force's191 Eskadrila Lovakih Aviona fighter squadron, but serviceability is low.

An effort to procure a fighter of Western origin was launched in 2017, resulting in bids from Saab for the Gripen, and from Greece, Israel, and the U.S. offering F-16s. A batch of 12 ex-Israeli Lockheed Martin F-16s was selected in March, but this deal foundered in January 2019 due to U.S. objections regarding third-party technology transfer.

This led to a new fighter requirement being raised in July 2019, with new-build Gripen C/Ds and F-16 Block 70/72s being offered, along with various second-hand aircraft, including F-16s and Typhoons. A decision was expected in August 2020 for service-entry in 2022, but in early April 2020, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovi announced that the fighter procurement program would be postponed while the government concentrated on handling the Covid-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the March 22 earthquake that damaged parts of the capital.

While Saab has concentrated its development efforts on the Gripen E/F, the C/D remains an important part of its export offerings, and in its latest Meteor missile-capable MS20 software iteration represents a very capable fighter that is ideal for countries with limited budgets and with defensive military requirements. In 2017 Saab announced that it had begun production of a batch of long-lead items so that it could respond rapidly to any orders, promising an 18-month contract-to-delivery timescale. The Gripen C/D is in service with neighbor Hungary, with whom Croatia established a number of defense co-operation agreementsincluding air policingin April 2019.

Key life extension equipment delivered to Armenian NPP – Nuclear Engineering

Equipment required for reactor pressure vessel annealing has been delivered to the Armenian nuclear power plant.

The annealing will be carried out as part of the project to modernise and extend the life of unit 2 of the Armenian NPP. The plant will be prepared for the final part of the work on extending its service life, which will take place in 2021 - the reactor will be annealed, which will allow it to return to 80-85% of its original state by, the press service of Rosatom reported on 4 September.

This is an important science-intensive work to improve plant safety. Annealing will restore the characteristics of the metal of the reactor vessel, which will allow it to be safely operated in the future, said Yuri Sviridenko, manager for the life extension project.

The vessel will be annealed after the fuel assemblies have been unloaded into the used fuel pool. The vessel will be inspected and the equipment installed in the reactor. Using an annealing unit, the reactor vessel will be heated to a temperature of 475 degrees Celsius, kept at this temperature for several days, after which it will slowly cool down.

The procedure will be carried out by several Rosatom organisations, each of which is responsible for its own segment of the work.

This technology for recovery annealing of the reactor vessel metal was first applied in 1987 at Novovoronezh 3. Now this procedure is carried out at all plants requiring service life extension. Reactor pressure vessel annealing has already been completed at VVER-440 reactors at Kola in Russia, Rovno in Ukraine, Kozloduy in Bulgaria and Loviisa in Finland.

Unit 2 of Armenian nuclear power plant was reconnected to the grid on 1 September after being closed for scheduled repairs, Rosatom said.

The work performed has made it possible to significantly increase the level of safety and reliability of the power unit. Preventive maintenance at the Armenian NPP was completed 12 days ahead of schedule, Rosatom said. This was possible due to the efficient organisation of the process, the focus of the personnel of the Armenian NPP on results, as well as mutual understanding and effective business relations with the involved organisations that were developed during the joint work."

Rusatom Service, part of Rosatoms electric power division, was the general contractor for the work. For the fifth year now, the Armenian NPP has been combining maintenance work with the implementation of a programme to extend the life of the plant, since most of the activities in this direction are technologically available only when the unit is shut down, Rosatom noted. After completion of the maintenance activities, life extension work continues.

Armenias state programme provides for the extension of the operating life of the existing NPP unit until 2026, as well as the phased commissioning of new units. Funding was provided by a Russian state export loan of $270 million and a grant of $30 million for up to 15 years. However, earlier this year Armenia refused to extend the loan preferring to finance further work at its own expense. The Armenian government provided a budgetary loan to the Armenian NPP in the amount of $131.38 million for 2020-22, while the cost of the agreement with Rusatom Service is limited to $40.255 million.

The two-unit Armenian nuclear plant was built in the 1970s, but was closed following the Spitak earthquake in 1988. Metsamor 2 restarted with Russian assistance in 1995 in the face of severe energy shortages.

Committee rejects owner’s case to throw out 15 year landfill site life extension plan in Milton Keynes – MKFM

A landfill site owners plan to add 15 years to the life of its contentious commercial and municipal waste tip has been thrown out.

FCC Environment runs the Bletchley Landfill Site, near Newton Leys, and it applied to Milton Keynes Council to add another 15 years to its operational life.

The tip is due to close in 2022 under permission granted in 2002, but the application would see it taking commercial and council waste until 2037 with another two years to finish off restoration work.

One of the objectors, resident Ethan Kelly-Wilson told Thursdays development control committee that he would be nearing retirement, and his child would be grown up before the site would be returned to nature.

Other objectors also made the case that residents, especially in Newton Leys, had brought their new homes on the understanding that they would only have to put up with the site for a few more years.

Adding 15 years would have a devastating impact, said Bletchley and Fenny Town councillor Ed Hume.

Mat Nicholson, the estates manager for owner FCC Environment, said he had concerns over the manner which some of the information was presented to the committee.

He claimed that it was in a manner not to give the full picture.

He said that the site, which employs 15 people, is regionally important, making up one quarter of the landfill space that is left in the whole of the south east of England.

Mr Nicholson said none of the statutory consultees had objected but that was not highlighted to the committee.

He claimed that consultees like the Environment Agency and the councils own environmental health officers were not given equal weight to other issues.

He admitted there had been a large number of recent complaints but claimed there is a disparity between complaints and reality.

Mr Nicholson added that if the life of the site was not extended then it would not be possible to restore the site as agreed. And he said it would cause issues with site gases and water.

But Tracy Darke, the councils director of economy, growth and culture, said councillors had to make a judgement on where the planning balance lies by taking everything into account.

Residents expected to have a country park in 2023 but in 2035 we could be in exactly the same position.

There is no clarity around when we get to the end date anyway.

Ward councillor Emily Darlington (Lab, Bletchley East) said having a landfill site in Milton Keynes until 2037 would go against the citys aim to be the greenest city.

And other speakers said they did not want Milton Keynes to be an exporter of other peoples rubbish when the council is aiming to send nothing at all to landfill.

Cllr Paul Trendall (Lib Dem, Campbell Park & Old Woughton) said: MK isnt everyones dumping ground.

Councillors voted unanimously to reject the application. FCC Environment will have the opportunity to appeal to the Government to get an inspector to overturn the committees decision.

The most recent research released provided interesting results. Quite interesting.

Of all of the countries in the world all of them where do you think the United States ranks with respect to the increase in human longevity? That is, in which countries are people living longer. (This came out pre-virus.)

It might be significant to point out that both individually and in the aggregate, the U.S. ranks first by a healthy margin in money spent on health care. Then, it might not.

You see, as a country we rank 45th overall in life extension.

Of utmost significance, experts say the primary cause of this less than stellar ranking is, in a word diet.

Thats right, diet. What we eat. How its prepared and seasoned. (Think animal fat, fried, fast foods.) And individual amounts. How much, that is.

Just look at us, folks. Overweight or obese is almost standard. Especially is this so in places such as where we live. In rural areas. In the South. Not an opinion. A fact.

Lets not just say diet and leave it at that. It is estimated that 68 percent of adults are overweight and 34 percent are obese.

An ideal heart-healthy diet as defined by the American Heart Association entails that saturated and trans-fat should be limited to less than seven percent and one percent of your daily calories, respectively Additionally, physical activity can help control weight and improve cardiovascular health. It is recommended to exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week. (Rony L. Shammas, MD, FACC, FASE, FSCAI, Vidant Medical Center)

Smoking? We dont even need to go there. We all know that it is a strong risk factor for heart attack, stroke and cancer.

Then, we could cite grim warnings about cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, of course. But most of us have long known about all of this. Some are in denial, and some are going to do what they want to do, all information and warnings be damned. And that includes those now who also dont respect the coronavirus.

A good friend of mine would often say that You cant save people from themselves.

And that, friends, is the way it is.

Face-Off In The Aegean: How Greek And Turkish Air Forces Stack Up – The Drive

Greece and Turkey have a long history of animosity despite both being NATO members. However, theres a real concern that the current spike in tensions mainly related to control of oil and gas reserves and maritime rights in the eastern Mediterranean could escalate. If they do, the respective air arms of the two countries are likely to be heavily engaged, so its a good time to take a detailed look at their respective assets and how their capabilities compare.

Its worth noting here that the Hellenic and Turkish Air Forces regularly spar over the Aegean Sea. Turkey and Greece broadly have a long history of confrontation, including an all-out war fought in support of competing factions in Cyprus in 1974. That independent Mediterranean island, which is still divided between areas under the control of ethnic Greek and Turkish Cypriots to this day, remains a focus of antagonism between the two countries. However, current developments in the region have caused alarm in both NATO and the European Union.

The background to the current dispute surrounds the race to exploit energy reserves in the eastern Mediterranean. The two countries have claims on overlapping areas containing undersea oil and gas fields. In July, Turkey announced it was sending its research vessel Oru Reis to carry out a drilling survey in disputed waters off the coast of southwest Turkey, but close to the Greek island of Kastellorizo. The Greek military was put on alert and the vessel eventually left port on August 10, 2020.

NormanEinstein/wikicommons

The illegal and provocative behavior of Turkey has a serious backlash not only to peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean but to the cohesion of NATO and to its relations with the European Union, said Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, in response to the Turkish drilling mission.

Greece claims 40,000 square kilometers of maritime jurisdiction area due to this tiny island [Kastellorizo] and attempts to stop the Oru Reis and block Turkey in the eastern Mediterranean, declared aatay Erciyes, Director General at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The build-up to the latest phase in the standoff included a collision between Greek and Turkish frigates on August 12, 2020. The Turkish warship involved was one of five escorting the research vessel OruReis. The Greek frigate Limnos made contact with its Turkish counterpart Kemal Reis and the resulting damage was apparently confirmed by photos published soon afterward in the Greek media.

Complicating matters, some of the recent exercises in the area have involved foreign participation, including French Air Force Rafale fighter jets that arrived at Souda-Chania Air Base on Crete for joint training with Greek F-16s on August 13, 2020. The French Ministry of Defense described the deployment as a temporarily strengthening [of] their presence in the eastern Mediterranean. Souda then received four F-16E/F Desert Falcons from the United Arab Emirates, which had touched down at the Greek base by August 27 to take part in further joint exercises.

On August 26, Greece began a naval exercise south of Cyprus involving forces from Cyprus, France, and Italy. At the same time, warships from Turkey and the United States were taking part in separate drills in the same area. The U.S. Navy has taken part in maneuvers with both the Greek and Turkish navies in recent weeks, including involvement from Greek F-16s and the U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill.

U.S. NAVY/MASS COMMUNICATION SPECIALIST 3RD CLASS LOUIS THOMPSON STAATS IV

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) executes drills with the Hellenic Navy frigate Aigaion (F 460) in the Mediterranean, August 24, 2020.

As well as a war of words and aggressive acts between ships, there have been other examples of direct posturing, too. The Turkish Ministry of Defense released what it claims is footage from the head-up display (HUD) of one of its F-16 fighters showing an incident that occurred on August 27, 2020, in which six Greek F-16s were supposedly warded off by Turkish Vipers. According to a statement from the ministry, the Greek fighters launched from Crete and were heading towards southern Cyprus when they approached an area in which Turkey had previously declared a restricted zone for a naval exercise.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense said the Greek jets were removed from the region and local media reported that the Oru Reis was also active in the area at the time. The supplied HUD footage shows F-16s in a turning fight at close quarters and includes several tone alerts indicating that the Turkish pilots AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile (AAM) was locked on to the opposing F-16. The full story behind the incident is unclear, but encounters of this kind are not uncommon over the contested waters of the Aegean. However, by posting the video now, the Turkish Ministry of Defense seems keen to display its willingness and ability to take on Greek airpower to protect its interests in the region.

The most recent altercations between Greek and Turkish forces, and the soaring rhetoric that has come with them, have been met with concern among the wider European Union, of which Greece is a member. The German Defense Minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, has called for the situation in the Aegean to be defused and criticized the latest rounds of potentially provocative naval exercises staged by both countries in the area. Kramp-Karrenbauers words suggest theres now a wider recognition that another incident could put Greece and Turkey on a more serious collision course again, including in the air.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan on August 28, 2020, to talk about developments in the eastern Mediterranean. Stoltenberg stressed dialogue and de-escalation and the two discussed deconfliction mechanisms to prevent further incidents. For NATO, any tensions between Greece and Turkey threaten the solidarity of the alliance, potentially diminishing its ability to confront common security challenges.

Were urging everyone to stand down to reduce tensions and begin to have diplomatic discussions added U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. It is not useful to increase military tensions in the region.

After examining the background to the latest standoff, lets look at the key combat aircraft types that make up the two countries respective air arms.

The two countries air forces are spearheaded today by Lockheed Martin F-16 Viper fleets, which have now recorded three decades of service in Greece and Turkey. In both cases, the fighter jets were primarily purchased to replace aging F-104 Starfighters and F-5 Freedom Fighters.

The Hellenic Air Force (HAF, or Elliniki Polemiki Aeroporia) received 170 F-16s of various types between 1989 and 2010 and, with a large-scale modernization program underway, the Viper will remain the backbone of the air arm for many years to come.

HELLENIC AIR FORCE

A Hellenic Air Force F-16C Block 50 in the markings of 341 Mira and armed with AGM-88 HARMs.

Greek Vipers were acquired via Foreign Military Sales (FMS) channels, through the Peace Xenia program, which included four distinct phases.

Peace Xenia I provided 34 single-seat F-16C and six two-seat F-16D Block 30 jets delivered between 1988 and 1990.

Peace Xenia II added another 32 F-16C and eight F-16D Block 50 aircraft. These jets are capable of night attack missions with the LANTIRN targeting pod and have AGM-88 High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) capability, making them suitable for the suppression/destruction of enemy air defenses (SEAD/DEAD) mission.

Peace Xenia III provided 40 F-16C and 20 F-16D Block 52+ jets, all equipped with conformal fuel tanks for extended range. These were delivered between 2003 and 2004.

After scrapping plans to purchase the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Greek government instead opted for another Viper order, under Peace Xenia IV, to replace the veteran fleet of A-7H/TA-7H Corsair II attack jets. The deal covered 20 F-16C and 10 F-16D Block 52+ Advanced versions, also sometimes referred to as Block 52M aircraft, and was signed in December 2005.

The HAFs aging F-16 Block 30s are now consolidated with a single squadron, 330 Mira, and the jets have undergone the Falcon UP service-life extension, work being undertaken locally by Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI).

Of the 150 or so Vipers still operational, the bulk is divided among eight operational squadrons based at Araxos, Lrisa, Na Anghialos, and Souda-Chania, but the HAF also maintains a number of rotational detachments on islands in the Aegean. All HAF F-16 squadrons maintain a full air-to-air capability and undertake quick reaction alert (QRA) readiness duties to counter potential Turkish airspace violations, despite the fact that some are specialized air-to-ground squadrons.

The Collins Aerospace DB-110 reconnaissance pod is available to Greek F-16s for reconnaissance missions, and additional weapons options include the AIM-120C AMRAAM, AGM-154C Joint Stand-Off Weapon (JSOW), Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), and reportedly Wind Corrected Munitions Dispensers (WCMD). Unusually, the HAF has opted for the pan-European IRIS-T as the primary short-range AAM for the Viper, rather than the AIM-9X Sidewinder.

Eyeing a longer-term modernization for its Vipers, Greece selected the F-16V upgrade that will bring 84 aircraft all of them Block 52+ and Block 52+ Advanced jets to Block 70/72 standard, including the AN/APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR) with active electronically scanned array (AESA), Raytheon Modular Mission Computer, remodeled cockpit including the second-generation Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS ), and the Link 16 data link, among other enhancements. Most of the work will be undertaken by HAI in Greece. There have been suggestions that the remaining 38 Block 50 jets could also undergo an upgrade, bringing them to a so-called Block 50+ Advanced standard, but this hasnt been contracted. The fate of the Block 30 aircraft is unclear, but they could be sold off, or perhaps used as aggressors for air defense training.

TURKISH MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENSE

A Turkish Air Force F-16 pair heads out for a training mission, led by an F-16C Block 50.

On the other side, the Turkish Air Force, or Trk Hava Kuvvetleri (THK), is the worlds third-largest Viper operator, with a total of 270 aircraft delivered in successively more capable Block 30, Block 50 and Block 50+ configurations.

Local industry also plays a significant part in the Turkish Viper program, with involvement from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) from the outset, including local assembly of aircraft and production of center/aft fuselage sections and wings.

The Turkish Viper procurement took place in four phases: Peace Onyx I to IV.

Under Peace Onyx I, Turkey received 136 F-16Cs and 24 F-16Ds, of which the first 44 were completed to Block 30 standard. The next 116 aircraft within Peace Onyx I were Block 40-standard jets that included the provision for LANTIRN pods. Deliveries took place from 1987.

Peace Onyx II covered 60 F-16C and 20 F-16D Block 50 aircraft, which were delivered between 1996 and 1999. Like the HAF Vipers, Turkish F-16 Block 50s were provided with the AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missile.

The Peace Onyx III contract provided the Common Configuration Implementation Program (CCIP) upgrade. As well as adding more sophisticated weapons and sensors, this improved logistics support and reduced life-cycle costs. Lockheed Martin provided a total of 163 CCIP kits for Turkeys surviving F-16C/D Block 40/50s. After modernization, the aircraft featured APG-68(V)9 multi-mode radar, color cockpit displays and recorders, JHMCS, Link 16 data link, Sniper targeting pods, and new weapons, including the AGM-84K Joint Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response (SLAM-ER), AGM-154A/C JSOW, AIM-9X, and CBU-103/105 Wind Corrected Munitions Dispensers (WCMD). Other weapons available to Turkish Vipers include the AIM-120 AMRAAM as well as the AGM-65 Maverick TV-guided air-to-ground missile.

The most recent Peace Onyx IV program provided another 14 F-16C and 16 F-16D Block 50+ jets, which are known to be compatible with the 1,300-pound Roketsan Stand-Off Missile (SOM) for standoff precision strike, as well as other indigenous weapons. These aircraft were delivered between June 2011 and December 2012.

More recently, TAI has set about upgrading 35 of its oldest Block 30 Vipers. This is based around a service-life extension using kits supplied by Lockheed Martin. The status of this program is currently uncertain, with reports that the U.S. Congress may have blocked the contract in response to Ankaras purchase of the S-400 air defense system.

Today, the THKs F-16C/D fleet is operated by two squadrons at Balikesir, two squadrons at Bandirma, two squadrons at Diyarbakir, one squadron at Eskiehir, one squadron at Konya, and two squadrons at Merzifon. Units are assigned particular roles, among them air defense, SEAD/DEAD, tactical air support for maritime operations, close air support, reconnaissance, and aggressor.

Eskiehir is home to 113 Filo, a former RF-4E operator, which is assigned the DB-110 reconnaissance pod that is used with the F-16, four of these pods having been acquired.

Greece: 153

Turkey: 245

The Hellenic Air Force also operates the Mirage 2000 multi-role fighter, having acquired two distinct versions of the delta-wing jet. The first order was placed for 36 single-seat Mirage 2000EGs and four two-seat Mirage 2000DGs and deliveries began in 1988. Although being used primarily for air defense, these aircraft can be armed with the AM.39 Exocet anti-ship missile.

HELLENIC AIR FORCE

The HAF subsequently obtained a further 15 new-build Mirage 2000-5BG/EG (Mirage 2000-5 Mk 2) jets and brought 10 of its earlier aircraft to the same standard. One reason for adding the more capable Mirage 2000-5 Mk 2 may have been to match the beyond-visual-range capabilities of Turkeys F-16s armed with AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles. The French-made jets are armed with the MBDA MICA missile, available in both radar-guided and infrared-guided variants.

The Greek Mirage 2000-5 Mk 2 jets also have an important long-range conventional strike role with the MBDA SCALP-EG cruise missile. A first airframe upgraded by HAI took to the air in 2005 and the first new-built fighters from Dassault began to arrive in Greece in 2007.

The HAFs Mirage fleet is divided between two squadrons based at Tangra, and the jets also conduct rotational detachments to islands in the Aegean.

As well as both flying the F-16, Greece and Turkey are among the last operators of the F-4 Phantom II. However, both countries have now retired their reconnaissance-configured RF-4 fleets.

The Hellenic Air Force has a single unit operating F-4E fighters that were upgraded to Peace Icarus 2000 standard under the Avionics Upgrade Program (AUP) between 1997 and 2001. Stationed at Andravida near the west coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, these jets are multi-role-capable, but its thought they now focus on air-to-ground missions.

HELLENIC AIR FORCE

Among others, the AUP added AN/APG-65Y radar, inertial navigation system/GPS, AN/ALR-68(V)2 radar warning receiver, color multifunctional displays, a new head-up display, and hands on throttle and stick (HOTAS) controls. The Rafael Litening II laser targeting pod provides day/night precision targeting and weapons include laser-guided bombs, AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles, AIM-120 AMRAAM, and AIM-9 Sidewinder.

While 33 of the 36 Greek F-4Es that underwent the AUP remain operational, its thought that around 20 are actually available for operations at any given time.

Turkeys Phantoms also underwent a significant mid-life upgrade, emerging as the F-4E Terminator 2020. The modernization involved Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) and covered 54 airframes, including structural and avionics work. The upgraded avionics include an Elta EL/M-2032 multi-mode radar, digital glass cockpit, wide-angle HUD, and HOTAS controls. The jets can be armed with the Israeli-made Popeye standoff missile, as well as the indigenous Roketsan SOM for use against land and sea targets. Other stores include the HGK 500-pound INS/GPS-guided bomb, KGK 500-pound or 1,000-pound glide bomb, and the LGK-82 an indigenous version of the 500-pound GBU-12 laser-guided bomb.

While both countries have made efforts to acquire new-generation fighters to modernize their fighter arms, Turkey was ejected from the F-35 stealth fighter program in response to its purchase of Russian-made S-400 air defense systems. Greece, meanwhile, has been identified as a possible F-35 customer too, and more recently unconfirmed reports have emerged in the Greek press that the country is examining a potential purchase of 18 Rafale multi-role fighters.

It was expected that the Turkish Phantoms would be retired with the arrival of the F-35, but with Ankaras expulsion from the Joint Strike Fighter program, its possible the THK F-4s will continue in service until around 2030, by which time the next-generation TF-X fighter may be available. Today, the F-4Es serve with a single squadron at Eskiehir.

Airborne early warning (AEW) is a critical function for modern complex air operations and both Greece and Turkey contribute to NATOs E-3A Sentry Component, which maintains a pooled fleet of the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft at Geilenkirchen Air Base in Germany. The component also has forward operating bases at Aktion in Greece and Konya in Turkey. However, both countries have also established independent airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) capabilities.

HELLENIC AIR FORCE

The EMB-145H combines the Ericsson Erieye AESA radar with the Embraer EMB-145 bizjet airframe.

Greece opted for its own AEW&C solution in 1999 when it ordered four Embraer EMB-145H aircraft from an Embraer, Ericsson, and Thales consortium. The aircraft are equipped with Ericsson Erieye AESA radar. These aircraft also have a signals intelligence (SIGINT) capability using Elettronica ALR-733(V)5 electronic support measures (ESM). The Greek aircraft has five workstations and the mission crew typically comprises a radar operator, mission commander, SIGINT specialist, and two weapons controllers.

Prior to the delivery of the EMB-145H aircraft, the HAF leased a pair of S 100B Argus AEW&C aircraft from the Swedish Air Force for a two-year period as an interim solution. The EMB-145H aircraft have been operational at Elefsis, west of Athens, since 2009. Using the Link 11 and Link 16 networks, the Embraers can exchange data with airborne, naval, and ground-based assets.

BOEING

A pre-delivery shot of the fourth and final 737 AEW&C for Turkey.

Turkeys airborne early warning and control fleet is based around the Boeing 737 AEW&C that was acquired under the Peace Eagle program and is sometimes referred to by the local designation E-7T. The aircrafts primary sensor is the Northrop Grumman Multi-Role Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) surveillance radar. The impetus to acquire the aircraft seems to have been to fill the gaps in airspace coverage over Turkeys mountainous territory, where ground-based radars wouldnt necessarily detect high-speed, low-flying targets.

The Boeing 737 AEW&C was selected in 2000 and four examples were eventually ordered, the first provided by Boeing, while the remaining three were outfitted by TAI. The project experienced a number of delays, including as a result of a breakdown in relations between Ankara and Israel, the latter which was to provide the Elta ESM system. The first aircraft was finally delivered to the air force in 2014, six years late. Today, the four aircraft are stationed at Konya and as well as working with fighters and monitoring airspace over the Aegean, the fleet has been used to monitor movements along the Syrian border including reportedly tracking Wing Loong II drones operating over Libya. Unlike the HAFs EMB-145H, the 737 AEW&C can use inflight refueling to extend the duration of its missions.

With most combat operations anticipated to take place regionally, the Hellenic Air Force has a fairly modest tactical transport fleet. It also lacks an organic air-to-air refueling capability, meaning fighters would have to be refueled on the ground, perhaps at forward-located island airstrips. The air force operates around seven older C-130B/H Hercules airlifters, plus two more H-models modified for electronic intelligence (ELINT) missions. Surviving Hercules underwent an Avionics Upgrade Program (AUP) between 2005 and 2010, including modifications to the INS/GPS, autopilot, weather radar, and digital engine controls. A partially glass cockpit and revised electronic warfare system were also included.

The HAF also flies eight more modern twin-turboprop C-27J Spartan tactical transports, delivered from 2005, although these have experienced limited availability in recent years. Mainly employed for airlift, the Spartans can also be used for medical evacuation and maritime patrol.

In contrast to the HAF, the Turkish Air Force has an aerial refueling capacity using seven KC-135R Stratotankers, which can deliver fuel via their boom or a boom-to-drogue adapter. For its transport needs, the THK relies upon around 16 C-130B/Es (airframes that are even older than those operated by Greece) and a diminishing number of Transall C-160Ds, as well as smaller CN235s, 42 of which were ordered and two of which have been adapted for ELINT duties.

The Turkish airlift fleet is also in the process of modernization through the induction of the A400M, and the last of 10 examples are scheduled to be handed over in 2022. Two C-160Ds have been adapted for communications jamming and can reportedly also undertake communications intelligence (COMINT) missions.

Both nations include fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities and, although these are assigned to their respective naval air arms, there is some crossover as Greeces P-3 Orion aircraft are operated by Hellenic Air Force flight crews working alongside naval mission crews.

The Hellenic Navy ceased operations with its five P-3Bs in September 2009 before a mid-life upgrade and modernization program was launched, Lockheed Martin being awarded a $142-million, seven-year contract covering reactivation of one aircraft plus hardware and software for the other four. The first refurbished P-3B was handed over by HAI in Tanagra in May 2019.

LOCKHEED MARTIN

Official handover of the first refurbished P-3B to Hellenic Navy officials in May 2019.

The aircraft are initially undergoing an interim upgrade, but its planned for them to be brought up to full P-3HN standard that should provide another 20 years of service. This also includes an indigenous tactical mission suite, the Maritime Mission Integration and Management System (M2IMS). The Greek Orion fleet is stationed at Elefsis. Once back to full strength, the P-3 will provide Greece with a long-range maritime patrol capability to monitor the Mediterranean, and especially the Aegean, including the Aphrodite gas field off the coast of Cyprus.

Turkish MPA capability rests not with its air force but with its naval air arm. After the retirement of the veteran S-2 Tracker in the early 1990s, the Turkish Navy was left without a fixed-wing MPA capability until the launch of the Meltem project at the end of that decade. This has provided six MPA-configured CN235M-100 twin turboprops, acquired under Meltem I, and then outfitted with the Thales AMASCOS-300 (Airborne Maritime Situation and Control System) under Meltem II. For ASW missions, the aircraft can be armed with Mk 46 torpedoes.

Finally, the Turkish Meltem III program is now providing a more advanced MPA capability, based on the ATR 72-600 twin-engine turboprop, outfitted by Leonardo. The work has been subject to delays, however, and the first of six aircraft was reportedly still undergoing final tests in April 2020, having made a first post-conversion test flight back in 2014.

GSK and Sanofi begin coronavirus vaccine trials in the UK and US – Business Leader

International pharmaceutical giants GSK and Sanofi have today announced that they have begun clinical trials of their coronavirus vaccine.

The two firms have revealed that 440 adults would be given doses of their vaccine at 11 sites across the US. The results are scheduled to be published in December with more trials scheduled to take place over the next few months.

The Anglo-French partnership uses the same protein-based technology as one of Sanofis influenza vaccines.

Thomas Triomphe, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Sanofi said: The initiation of our clinical study is an important step and brings us closer to a potential vaccine which could help defeat COVID-19. Our dedicated teams and partner continue to work around the clock as we aim to deliver first results in early December. Positive data will enable a prompt start of the pivotal phase three trial by the end of this year.

This follows the news last week the British firm AstraZeneca also began clinical trials in the UK.

The trial, called NCT04507256, will evaluate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of AZD7442.1 The trial will include up to 48 healthy participants in the UK aged 18 to 55 years and is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), part of the US Department of Defense, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Mene Pangalos, Executive Vice President, BioPharmaceuticals R&D, said: This trial is an important milestone in the development of our monoclonal antibody combination to prevent or treat COVID-19. This combination of antibodies, coupled to our proprietary half-life extension technology, has the potential to improve both the effectiveness and durability of use in addition to reducing the likelihood of viral resistance.

A new 500m funding package will be invested in next generation testing technology and increased testing capacity, the Health and Social Care Secretary announced today.

To date, large-scale COVID-19 testing system has carried out more than 16 million tests and this new funding for quick result test trials and repeat population testing will help take the programme to the next level.

A new, community-wide trial in Salford will launch imminently to assess the benefits of repeat population testing. Existing, promising trials in Southampton and Hampshire, using a saliva test and a rapid 20-minute test, will also be expanded using the new funding.

By using this cutting-edge technology to widely roll out rapid tests, chains of transmission will be broken almost immediately by delivering on-the-spot results. Successful trials will then be expanded and rolled out more widely.

The funding will also be used to further extend capacity for existing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing across the country. All positive results will be passed to the NHS Test and Trace system, to trace contacts, prevent further transmission, and save lives.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: Testing is a vital line of defence in combating this pandemic. Over the past 6 months we have built almost from scratch one of the biggest testing systems in the world. We need to use every new innovation at our disposal to expand the use of testing, and build the mass testing capability that can help suppress the virus and enable more of the things that make life worth living. We are backing innovative new tests that are fast, accurate and easier to use and will maximise the impact and scale of testing, helping us to get back to a more normal way of life.

I am hugely grateful for the work being done on this national effort to strengthen our ability to tackle this virus. While we work on a vaccine we must innovate our way out of this crisis.

Trials across the country will now be launched or extended, with the latest starting in Salford today.

Committee rejects owners case to throw out 15 year Milton Keynes landfill site’s life extension plan – Milton Keynes Citizen

Energy Dept. looks to save what critical infrastructure parts that it can – Federal News Network

Some old pieces of the nations critical infrastructure are too difficult or expensive to replace, but they can be preserved and improved. Thats the tact the Energy Department is taking in a program called Rapid Encapsulation of Pipelines Avoiding Intensive Replacement, or REPAIR program. Its out of the Energy Departments Advanced Research Projects Agency. ARPA-Es REPAIR Program Director Jack Lewnard joined Federal Drive with Tom Teminfor the details.

Tom Temin: Dr. Lewnard, good to have you on.

Jack Lewnard:Thanks, Tom. Glad to be here.

Tom Temin:Well, tell us about first of all, what the process that youre looking to establish here, rapid encapsulation of pipelines. What is that?

Jack Lewnard:Yeah, its a good question. The nations natural gas distribution infrastructure is about 2 million miles of pipes. And some of these pipes are quite old, some of them over 100 years old. Replacing those pipes is a challenge. The main cost is actually the cost of disruption and excavation. So our goal is to offer an alternative. Instead of excavating the old pipes, we want to go in and essentially rehabilitate those pipes in place using robotic tools. And that way we can avoid the entire cost of excavation. And the disruptions associated with that.

Tom Temin:And when you mentioned 2 million miles of pipe then, that sounds like its not just the transport interstate of natural gas, but also each line to every dwelling and every down city streets also?

Jack Lewnard:Thats correct. And repair is really directed at those ladder lines, the so-called distribution system. This is the low pressure system that connects to 75 million meters, residential customers, commercial accounts. And thats where we find these legacy pipes. Were particularly concerned with the older cast iron pipes. Those were installed between about 1850 and about 1930. And then after that, when they started putting in, what at that time were modern steel pipes, those steel pipes at that time were not cathodically protected. In other words, they werent protected against corrosion. And those pipes were installed between about 1930 and maybe about 1970. So I want to emphasize this is a small fraction of the nations total distribution system, maybe only about 3% of the pipes. But they account for a majority of the leaks and PHMSA, and the state regulators have long sought to replace those pipes. And the utilities are actively working to do it but we need a lower cost method, because a $1 million to $10 million a mile its really just too expensive to replace them all at once.

Tom Temin:Sure. And when something does go wrong, thats the occasional house blowing right off the foundation, right?

Jack Lewnard:Well, thats the most dramatic situation. But generally, what you have are a lot of chronic leaks and those chronic leaks, in aggregate have a negative impact on both the environment and theres a certain cost associated with that. And so what you really have is a kind of a low-level ongoing maintenance problem. And it would be a lot better if there were a cheaper, more cost-effective and faster way to repair those pipes than to excavate. Thats so disruptive, its so expensive it ultimately becomes quite a burden for the utility customers to bear those costs.

Tom Temin:And give us a little detail on how you envision this working because the pipes are in dirt. And so somehow the robots have to get the dirt away and put something around the pipe like fiberglass or what, epoxy or something?

Jack Lewnard:Yeah, so the trick here is to avoid doing as much excavation as possible. So its very well known in the gas utility industry to do a minor excavation to access a pipe, and then you can do whats called hot tapping or cut a hole into the pipe. And from there, you can insert a robotic tool and this is commonly done with inspection tools, and they will literally crawl around inside the pipe with cameras and other instruments and gather information from inside the network. What wed like to do is extend that and now put in robotic tools that can essentially put a coating on the inside of the pipe. And that coating is intended to be a structural coating, and provide sufficient mechanical support that the pipe can now be rehabilitated with a life extension of up to 50 years.

Tom Temin:Got it. Were speaking with Dr. Jack Lewnard. Hes program director of the repair program at the Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Energy Department (ARPA-E). And the $33 million, its coming through ARPA-E and not through some regular Energy Department-type of program. So it sounds experimental. And so are you trying this with certain locations to see if it can be proven out? And how will the locations be decided?

Jack Lewnard:Oh, so we are actually starting a little bit more basic level. Were going to start essentially in the lab. Weve awarded 10 teams and they have a diverse set of approaches. We have two teams that are looking at straight up polymer coatings. We have two teams that are looking at polymer fiber composite coating, similar to what you see in a Boeing 777 jet very strong because of the added fibers in there. And then we have two teams that are looking at cold spray metal. This is metal that would be essentially fine powders that are impacted onto the surface and adhered. And one team thats actually looking at sintered metal for the inside of the pipes. And so what theyre going to do is spend the first roughly year or so demonstrating proof of concept that they can actually make their techniques work in this highly constrained geometry inside of a pipe. Theyve got to get in there, theyve got to show that they can, you know, create this deposition on the inside walls, and then cure or otherwise perfect that, that coding, and then in the second and third year, therell be further developed that with the idea that well then finally have a demonstration in a test piece of pipe. I have to emphasize this is a very novel approach. The coatings that were looking at dont exist, the robotic tools dont exist. So theres a lot of new stuff here. But thats classic ARPA-E, you know: High impact but high risk.

Tom Temin:And these teams are academic or are they industrial? Or who are some of the recipients?

Jack Lewnard:Yeah, we actually got a very broad response. We have national labs participating. We have five universities who are primes but even those universities are generally working with private companies and national labs. And then we we have three small companies who have also, are getting awards.

Tom Temin:And just a detail question: These pipes are what a couple of inches across in diameter?

Jack Lewnard:Well, the distribution system ranges in size from some of the older pipes that were put in back in the 1800s. Some of those pipes can be 48 inches, basically four feet in diameter, some even a few larger than that. The majority of the pipes are in the 12-inch to 2-inch diameter. And for repair for this early stage were targeting pipes that are 10 inches and above, just to allow some flexibility for the technology developers to have some space. I would be ideal to ultimately have robotic tools that could go down into 4-inch-and-below-size pipes. But just to keep the problem tractable at this point, were targeting 10-inch and above pipes.

Tom Temin:Right so this wont be able to transfer to, say, heart surgery anytime soon. But my other question was not the you mentioned the pipes are often corroded or, you know, in some ways deteriorated. Will the grantees be using pieces of deteriorated pipe? Because you have to know that itll transfer from say brand new steel to steel thats been in there for 40, 50 years.

Jack Lewnard:You and theres actually two types of pipes I want to emphasize. The first type is cast iron. So, you know, cast iron pots, I think people have a vision of kind of a very rough surface. These were the pipes, state of the art of the 1860s to about 1930. And cast iron is still used in water pipes, but not in gas pipes anymore. So thats one type of pipe that we have to be concerned with. The cast iron pipes generally are fairly thick, but they do have a very rough surface. And then the other is the so-called bare steel pipes, which are older steel pipes, you know, produced by techniques that arent used today. Those will generally be fairly clean and smooth on the inside. The corrosion is really on the outside of those pipes. But in both cases, were looking for techniques that can work with with each one of these materials. And they do have different surface properties.

Tom Temin:Got it. I guess corrosion on the outside, you can pretty much bet will eventually make its way inside.

Jack Lewnard:Thats correct. And that is one of the challenges. And then of course, that leads to leaks. So one of the things we want to do is make sure that the coatings that we impart on the inside of the pipe are fully mechanically able to carry the loads of that pipe. Because we assume that over the next 50 years, that outer pipe skin, if you will, will continue to deteriorate. So one of the goals of repair is that the pipe coating that we put in, be able to act as essentially a brand new pipe inside of the old pipe. And we assume that that old pipe just deteriorates away and is no longer providing any kind of mechanical integrity to the pipe system.

Tom Temin:Almost like a snake shedding its skin?

Jack Lewnard:Thats exactly right.

Tom Temin:Dr. Jack Lewnard is program director of the Repair Program at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, ARPA-E. Thanks so much for joining me.

Jack Lewnard:I very much appreciate your interest in the program.

Brainstorming.com Launches a New Collaborative Idea Building Platform – PR Web

Everything weve ever created has been accomplished on the shoulders of others. Its how people achieve progress. Our platform turns this into the simplest idea iteration process.

MARIBOR, Slovenia (PRWEB) September 01, 2020

Brainstorming.com has launched a new collaborative ideation platform intended to help people share and upgrade each others ideas. The company believes that each of us has strengths and weaknesses. combined however, there is synergy and there is great intellectual power. The platforms goal is to bring together communities of creative individuals and help focus their collective intelligence on specific problems.

The launch of the platform is a natural evolution as the company aims to advance the frontiers of science and make our technologies catch up with our ambitions.

Companys founder, Darko Savic, explained that the platform matches people by field of interest rather than expertise, helps them bridge the different paradigms, and keeps the destructive human behaviors like trolling, bullying, posting nonsense, at bay. Different minds look at problems from different perspectives. What may be obvious to one person, can spark a revelation in another brain that is wired just a little differently. The focus is on having the thought process move from mini-breakthrough to breakthrough. This should result in productive collaboration between people who tolerate each others shortcomings and build upon each others ideas.

He further elaborates that everything humanity has ever created has been accomplished on the shoulders of others. Its how people achieve progress. The brainstorming platform turns this into a focused idea iteration process.

Just as YouTube is a general-purpose video sharing platform, Brainstorming.com hopes to be a general-purpose brainstorming platform where people share and upgrade each others ideas. Within the sea of random videos, there are some concerted efforts to do good for the world. A YouTube example of such an effort is the Team Trees campaign where people came together to combat climate change. Analogous to this, is how Brainstormings Longevity team intends to use the Brainstorming platform to advance ideas in the field of human life extension.

Initially, they are starting with a narrow focus audience interested in the science of biological longevity. They expect that with time, as the user base grows, the topics would organically diversify and encompass whatever people want to brainstorm about. They plan on establishing dedicated focus teams for each of the humanity impacting fields like artificial intelligence, climate preservation, bio-engineering, space travel, entrepreneurship and others.

Controlled Intelligent Packaging, Preservation and Shelf-Life Extension Market Will Generate Record Revenue by 2026 - The News Brok

What I Learned from the Glucose… – ScienceBlog.com

My fasting blood glucose has been creeping up over several years. (My fasting blood sugar is around 110, and HbA1c=5.7; fasting insulin=3.1, triglycerides=91.) Recently, I tried a continuous glucose monitor for the first time, to see what I could learn about eating and exercise habits that affect my blood glucose. The experiment led me to some reading and thinking that was worthwhile, but the results themselves were disappointing, limited (first) by flaws in the technology and (second) by wide variability that I could not trace to any of the usual behavioral correlates.

Why concern ourselves with blood sugar?

Insulin is generated in the pancreas after we eat, with a cascade of effects on the body. The primary short-term effect is to prevent glucose levels in the blood from getting too high, by notifying the liver of the need to pull glucose out of the blood and store energy as fat.

Loss of insulin sensitivity is a primary hallmark of human aging. Most of the known life extension strategies in lab animals have to do with insulin in one way or another. For example, the worm genedaf-2is the worms only insulin receptor, and mutating (weakening) thedaf-2 gene doubles the worms lifespan. Life extension benefits of exercise and caloric restriction are thought to work, at least in part, through the insulin metabolism.

But glucose is also dangerous, and as we get older we are poisoned by excess sugar in the blood. High blood sugar leads to [list fromMayo Clinic]

So for long-term health, the name of the game is to keep blood sugar down with as little insulin as possible, hence preservation of insulin sensitivity is the target. Metformin is a well-studied drug for keeping blood sugar down without insulin. I have been taking it (irregularly) for the last several years, intermixed with berberine and Gynostemma(Chinese name: jiaogulan =).

This reasoning plus direct evidence for life extension in rodents and indirect evidence of life extension in humans has led me to take metformin, though it is not without side-effects.

Long-term effects of metformin

Metformin is a credible longevity drug, statistically associated with lower risk of cancer, heart disease and especially dementia in humans. Six years ago, this studylaid the foundation for metformin as a longevity drug with the claim that people taking metformin had lower all-cause mortality, despite the fact that a population of type-2 diabetics was being compared to a healthier population. This finding inspired Nir Barzilai to raise support for theTAME study.

But metformin has its risks. A long-time contributor to this site, Dr Paul Rivas pointed me to evidence thatmetformin can interfere with exercise metabolism. Paul notes his personal experience with loss of peak performance while taking metformin. My own experience is consistent with this, though I have never done a rigorous A/B comparison. This study, demonstrating a small but consistent decrease in peak performance, appears to me to be well-designed and analyzed. A plausible mechanism is the interference of metformin with mitochondrial function [ref, ref].This article claims that metformin suppresses synthesis of ATP, which is the reservoir of energy for immediate use in all cell types. Ben Miller has done the most direct and most recently relevant human experiments in this area and his findings suggest the intriguing possibility that metformin blocks exercise adaptations almost completely in about half of individuals, but not at all in the other half. (If you want to know which half youre in, youll have to wait for next years study.)

For the majority of Westerners who exercise little or not at all, metformin may show reduction in long-term risk of age-related disease; but there is no data I know of on the subset of people who do vigorous exercise, comparing metformin to no metformin. Does metformin block the health effects of exercise?Rhonda Patrick citescredible referenceson this subjectas fast as she can get the words out, and her conclusion is that exercise is a better anti-aging program than metformin, and you really cant have both.

Do glucose-control herbs also blunt the benefits of exercise?

I wrote a few years ago listingbotanical alternatives to metformin. Much less research has gone into these herbs, so we must think theoretically about interference with benefits of exercise.

Berberine works by a mechanism of action that overlaps metformin. Both metformin and berberine promote AMPK (which in turn promotes sugar burning). Both metformin and berberine inhibit mitochondrial Complex I (slowing the conversion of sugar to usable energy). There is tentative experimental evidence that (unlike metformin) berberine does not inhibit adaptations to exercise [ref, ref, ref].

Gynostemmais a Chinese herb popularized by Life Extension Foundation in their proprietary compound calledAMPK Activator. Inanimal modelsand in humans,Gynostemmasuppresses blood sugar and blood cholesterol. Like metformin and berberine, it works through AMPK,which appears to be a good thing. It isanti-inflammatory, and has a history in China as cancer therapy, supported bymouse andin vitrostudies. In rodent studies,Gynostemmahas a beneficial effect on strength and endurance [ref, ref, ref]. Theone studyIve found on human diabetes shows modest benefits after 12 weeks. The only counter-indication that I have seen is that itincreases insulin release (in vitro), which I believe to be pro-aging.

Is it more important to suppress postprandial spikes or to depress fasting glucose levels?

HbA1c is a standard blood test for diabetes. It isrelated to average blood glucoselevels over the previous 90 days (= the half-life of hemoglobin in the blood). But the glycation of hemoglobin (as measured by A1c) happenspredominantly during the brief glucose spikes, rather than the much longer periods of average glucose levels. So it might be fairer to say that A1c summarizes peak glucose events over a 90-day period. And we might guess that the long-term health risks of high blood sugar are similarly more sensitive to the peaks than to the average.

I believe that apoptosis is on a hair trigger as we age, and part of the reason for this is too much p53.This studylinks P53 activation to postprandial glucose spikes, rather than to high average glucose levels. This studylinks deterioration in endothelial function (related to arterial disease) with glucose spikes. The same paper lists ROS and oxidative stress as additional risks.

For a long while, it has been established that high fasting blood sugar is associated withcardiovascular risk. Of course, there is also association withobesity and T2 diabetes, but for these, it is natural to think of fasting blood sugar as the result, rather than the cause.

Chris Kressersays the best indicator of metabolic health is blood glucose levels 2 hours after a meal. If you can bring your blood glucose down to normal within 2 hours after eating your insulin sensitivity is good. For me, unmedicated, it was 3 hours after dinner, but less than 2 hours after breakfast. Either berberine or metformin tamed the after dinner spikes within 2 hours.

Kresser claims that these guidelines from the American Diabetes Association are not strict enough, and that statistics show increased future risk of diabetes even for people in the ADA normal range. But he citesPetro Dobromylskyj, who makes an exception for anyone on a low-carb diet (how low isnt specified). Paradoxically, low-carb diets are claimed to be healthy, even though they decrease insulin sensitivity. I have been unable to make sense of this.

Kresser emphasizes that all numbers should be interpreted in the context of a persons other lifestyle and health indicators. In people who are active and not overweight, he is not inclined to worry about statistics in the prediabetic range. (I take comfort in this personally, and who can say if Im fooling myself?) But I can learn something from the way my glucose stats respond to medications, eating and exercising, whether or not I believe the absolute levels are concerning.

Writing inScience Magazinelast year, Charles Piller reviewed the ADA guidelines and found a consensus in the opposite direction that they were probably too strict, and unnecessarily worrisome to a great many people. By ADAs definition, 80 million Americans are pre-diabetic, which is 40% of the adult population. The conflict really is not over the statistics but the interpretation. You can say either People with A1c levels above 6 are at increased risk of progressing to diabetes or equally well, Most people with A1c levels less than 6.4 will never develop diabetes. Both statements are true.

As promised: my experience

The Freestyle Libre was very easy to use and set up. I followed the instructions and used a spring-loaded device to insert the monitor behind my biceps. It was painless. Theres a tiny wire that goes a few millimeters into the skin and an adhesive covering with a button containing the electronics.

The wearable button stores data for up to 8 hours. The other part of the kit is a reader that downloads data every time you bring the reader within an inch or two of the button. As long as you take a reading every 8 hours or less, you wont lose any data. And you can do it as often as you like, to get real time feedback on your glucose state.

The wearable button ($45) is meant to last two weeks, and then it must be discarded. My insurance (Blue Cross Medicare Advantage) wouldnt pay for it because I didnt have a diagnosis of diabetes. I found this out only after several trips to the drug store, interspersed with phone calls to Blue Cross, where I got repeated assurances that it would be covered. The reader ($85) can be reused. Apparently, it doesnt do anything that a cell phone app couldnt do, but Abbott (parent company of Freestyle) has arranged it so that you can only use the cell phone app if you purchase the reader.

To analyze historic data, you can use capabilities built into the phone app, or plug the reader or cell phone into a computer, using a USB cable. The data is uploaded to aweb sitecontaining analysis tools and an option for creating a CSV file for more detailed manipulation in a spreadsheet. (The download button is not so easy to find, but I called Abbotts tech support number, and connected without excessive wait time to a friendly and knowledgeable technician.)

My intention was to vary the glycemic content of my meals, my exercise schedule, eating and fasting schedule, and the medications I was taking (metformin and berberine) to learn what I could about glucose management. The first day I fasted, and I was concerned to see that all day my fasting glucose ranged between 110 and 120. (For reference: the standard healthy range for fasting glucose is 70-100. Below 70 is hypoglycemia. Above 100 is pre-diabetes and above 125 is type 2 diabetes.)

I ate a meal, and glucose shot up to 179 before bedtime, only gradually coming back down during the night. As it turned out, 179 was my high for the week.

The data is cut off after 10 days, though the monitor is supposed to have a lifetime of 14, because it fell off my arm. I looked for patterns in my data, and was able to learn only four things:

(In a long phone support session with an Abbott representative, they acknowledged the reality of my experience: that the monitor can loosen over time, resulting in readings that are anomalously low. They were happy to replace the monitor, and advised me against long periods of swimming. )

Unresolved

I was left wondering all the things I wanted to discover at the beginning of my experiment.

The thing that impressed me most was the natural variability of blood sugar, changing from hour to hour, uncorrelated with either food or exercise. I trust the body knows what its doing. Le corps a ses raisons que la raison ne connait pas.*

I hope to try the monitor for 2 weeks again when swimming season is over.

In the meantime, I am taking a modest, common-sense approach. I am going to leave out metformin but continue daily exercise and low doses of berberine andGynostemma, lightening my evening meal and ending the days food 3 hours before bedtime.

Walking burns calories (pulls sugar from the blood) 3 to 5 times as fast as sitting, and walking after a meal feels like a natural and pleasant thing to do. My doctor recommends it. Im going to try walking half an hour after breakfast and dinner, pending my next experiment with the CGM.

Cameco and Bruce Power support launch of Centre for Next Generation Nuclear Technologies and announce contracts that support innovation and isotope…

PORT HOPE, ON, Aug. 20, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cameco and Bruce Power announced today a series of initiatives highlighted by the creation of a centre for next generation nuclear technologies to leverage their existing partnership to help restart the Canadian economy, protect the environment and fight diseases like COVID-19 around the world. In addition, further to the Bruce Power Life-Extension Program and the existing long-term supply agreement, Cameco and Bruce Power have announced the additional supply of 1,600 specialized fuel bundles for Unit 6 scheduled for restart in 2024.

The two companies are industry leaders in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Canada, directly and indirectly employing 27,000 workers and creating $9-12 billion of investment annually in the Canadian economy. Bruce Power, Cameco and the entire Canadian nuclear industry remain at the forefront of science and innovation in the production of GHG emissions-free power and cancer-fighting isotopes.

Throughout the pandemic, Bruce Power and Cameco have been able to ensure the safe and reliable supply of GHG emissions-free electricity to millions of people in Canada, and will now leverage one of Canadas largest infrastructure projects, the Bruce Power Life-Extension Program, to help rebuild the national economy through innovation, including exploring project acceleration and other opportunities.

To expand on their important inter-provincial partnership, as founding members of the Nuclear Innovation Institute (NII), Bruce Power and Cameco are proud to announce the launch of the NII Centre for Next Generation Nuclear Technologies to identify post-COVID economic, environmental and health-care opportunities.

The new centre will focus on next generation nuclear technologies by advancing the existing expertise of suppliers, regulators and operators to support future economic, environmental and export opportunities for Ontario, Saskatchewan and beyond. Innovations in nuclear energy will help support new technologies like small modular reactors (SMRs), cancer-fighting isotopes and hydrogen development by using infrastructure investments that will drive the economy now and power the world of the future. It will also look at how the current Bruce Power site output can be further enhanced with new technologies and as foundational enablers.

Todays announcement, along with the existing long-term arrangements between Bruce Power and Cameco, opens the door to assist the provincial governments in both Saskatchewan and Ontario with getting the economy back on its feet after six difficult months working to protect and keep people safe in both provinces, said Mike Rencheck, President and CEO of Bruce Power. Were extremely grateful to Premiers Ford and Moe, and the members of their respective governments, for realizing the positive impact that the nuclear industry has on the lives of Canadians.

Our focus, through the Centre, on next generation nuclear technology is anchored on the basis of building from our existing assets including life extension and efficiencies, partnerships and supply chain. This has the potential to fully leverage existing assets, reducing the need for more costly new generation in the future, creating a foundation for new medical isotopes and a hydrogen economy all while laying the foundation for new nuclear such as SMRs.

Cameco and Bruce Power will also be expanding their role in support of the production of life-saving medical isotopes. With its facility in Cobourg, ON, Cameco will contribute its expertise to the development of Bruce Powers new Isotope Production System being developed by its partner IsoGen that will help produce Lutetium-177, an isotope used to treat prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. Bruce Power aims to begin harvesting Lutetium-177 in 2022. Cameco is a key supplier of materials in the production of Cobalt-60, which is produced in partnership with Ottawa-based Nordion, used to sterilize medical equipment and treat breast cancer and brain tumours.

Medical isotopes and leveraging our existing infrastructure in a post-COVID world are an important part of the future of nuclear, and Bruce Power is a leader and innovator in this sector, said Tim Gitzel, president and CEO of Cameco. I am proud that Cameco is able to contribute to this important work, especially now when the need for sterilized medical supplies is so high.

Were pleased to have our Ontario and Saskatchewan Premiers join us in celebrating our announcement today as the strength of the nuclear industry is grounded in meaningful relationships across the industry and across provinces..

Through their work on the Retooling and Economic Recovery Council, Bruce Power and Cameco focused on helping to ensure their communities had the tools they needed to endure the pandemic and now the focus has turned to powering the recovery.

The Life-Extension Program will continue to be a key economic driver and today will see a new arrangement for start-up fuel to be provided by Cameco when Bruce Powers nuclear reactors are ready to return to service following Major Component Replacement, beginning with the Unit 6 reactor. Cameco will supply 1,600 specialized fuel bundles for the safe restart of Unit 6, scheduled for 2024. This builds on the existing fuel arrangements between the two organizations announced in 2017 which was estimated to be worth $2 billion at the time and over the life of the contracts.

This new initiative will help drive Ontario-made and Canadian-made innovation for these emerging technologies and support our provinces economic recovery, said Ontario Premier Doug Ford. I want to thank Bruce Power and Cameco for this important investment, as well as for their generous community and PPE donations to support our front-line heroes and those in need over the past few months.

Working together, we will ensure our communities can recover and our economy can come roaring back.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe also offered his praise for the strong partnership.

The announcement today from Cameco and Bruce Power underscores the importance of Canadas nuclear industry, which is world class in every respect, from mining to research to power production, said Premier Moe. In Saskatchewan, were grateful for the contributions Cameco and Bruce Power are making every day to Canadas economic and social well-being.
