BioTime Announces Third Quarter 2012 Financial Results and Recent Corporate Accomplishments

BioTime, Inc. (NYSE MKT: BTX), a biotechnology company that develops and markets products in the field of regenerative medicine, today reported financial results for the third quarter and year-to-date period ended September 30, 2012 and highlighted recent corporate accomplishments.

Financial Results

Net Loss

Net loss attributable to BioTime for the third quarter of 2012 was $5.0 million or $0.10 per share, compared to a net loss of $3.7 million or $0.08 per share for the same period of 2011. For the nine months ended September 30, 2012, net loss attributable to BioTime was $15.4 million, or $0.31 per share, compared to $11.2 million, or $0.23 per share for the same period of 2011.

Revenue

Total revenue, on a consolidated basis, was approximately $1.0 million and $2.7 million for the third quarter and year-to-date period ended September 30, 2012, respectively, compared to $1.2 million and $2.8 million for the same periods of 2011. Total revenue was effectively the same as prior periods, but license revenue increased based upon our subsidiary LifeMap Sciences subscription and advertising revenue for GeneCards, which was offset by lower grant revenue recognized due to the completion of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) grant in August 2012.

Expenses

Total operating expenses for the third quarter of 2012 were $6.8 million, compared to $5.4 million for the comparable period in 2011. Research and development expenses for the second quarter of 2012 were $4.6 million, compared to $3.5 million for the comparable 2011 period. General and administrative expenses for the third quarter of 2012 were $2.2 million, compared to $1.9 million for the comparable 2011 period.

Total operating expenses for the first nine months of 2012 were $20.4 million, compared to $15.9 million for the comparable period in 2011. Research and development expenses for the first nine months of 2012 were $13.3 million, compared to $9.8 million for the comparable 2011 period. General and administrative expenses for the first nine months of 2012 were $7.0 million, compared to $6.2 million for the comparable 2011 period.

Regenerative medicine raises hope

Even as regenerative medicine emerges as a new hope for many, doctors caution that it takes time to get a new discovery from the research lab to patient treatment.

As an example, one type of regenerative medicine, treatment of blood cancer disorders, has taken about 50 years to develop, said Mayo Clinic heart specialist Dr. Andre Terzic,director of Mayo's regenerative medicine center.

"We want to make sure that we are not creating a hype in the society but that we are really offering hope for patients, and ultimately definitive solutions," he said.

Yet it might be hard for people awaiting cures to contain their excitement.

"It has clearly gone from science fiction into rigorous science, and now from science it's going into practice," Terzic said. "It's not yet a broadly-offered servicebut it's in the phase of rigorous clinical trials."

Dr. Stephen Russell, Mayo Clinic's associate director for translation, says"we can't just take what we did in the mouse and apply it in the clinic."

"What we have to do is we have to develop a clinical protocol, we have to scale up the manufacture of the product that we're going to use, which may involve the scaled culturing of cells from a patient," he said.

Human research studies must pass muster from the Institutional Review Board at Mayo as well as from the FDA.

"That process with your foot hard on the accelerator is probably a two- to three-year process," Russell said.

Fat-derived Stem Cells Hold Potential for Regenerative Medicine

PHILADELPHIA As researchers work on reconfiguring cells to take on new regenerative properties, a new review from Penn Medicine plastic surgeons sheds additional light on the potential power of adipose-derived stem cells - or adult stem cells harvested from fatty tissue - in reconstructive and regenerative medicine.

Reconstructive plastic surgeons have clinically integrated "fat grafting" into different surgeries for years, for breast, facial, and other reconstructive and restorative surgeries, with good success. Now, researchers are beginning to understand the power that fatty tissue holds. This new paper, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, enforces that adipose-derived stem cells can be routinely isolated from patients and, once molecular methods are worked out, may be useful for a multitude of regenerative medicine applications.

"The opportunities for regenerative medicine interventions based on adult stem cells are tremendous. It is critically important for us to better understand the biology of these cells so that we can develop novel, safe and effective treatments for our patients using their own cells." said the paper's senior author, Ivona Percec, MD, PhD, assistant professor in the division of Plastic Surgery in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Many groups are looking into different modes of isolating and modifying these cells for their regenerative properties, including experts at Penn's Institute for Regenerative Medicine and around Penn Medicine. For example, Dr. Percec's team is conducting translational research into the mechanisms controlling adipose-derived stem cells, and how they contribute to the normal human aging process.

Stem cells can undergo multiple divisions without differentiation, making them useful tools for cell-replacement therapy. Embryonic stem cells can convert to any cell type, whereas adult stem cells, like the stem cells derived from fat, can differentiate into many, but not all, cell types. A person's own fat tissue could then potentially be converted into cells specially designed to repair damage to the heart, cartilage, blood vessels, brain, muscle, or bone.

As regenerative medicine techniques are refined, experts will continue to explore the utility and benefits of stem cells derived from adipose tissue.

AxoGen, Inc. Announces Third Quarter 2012 Financial Results

ALACHUA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

AxoGen, Inc. (AXGN), a leading regenerative medicine company dedicated to advancing the science and commercialization of peripheral nerve repair solutions, today announced revenues for the third quarter ended September 30, 2012 of $1.98 million, a 74% increase over revenues of $1.14 million in the third quarter 2011.

Compared to last year, we delivered solid top-line growth during the quarter despite cash constraints and the distraction of raising capital, commented Karen Zaderej, Chief Executive Officer of AxoGen. In addition, to remain in compliance with covenants imposed by our former lender, we carefully managed cash and chose to defer certain sales force growth and marketing activities.

Ms. Zaderej continued, As a result of the recent financing with PDL, we paid off all bank debt and eliminated the restrictive lender requirements. This will allow us the flexibility to develop and expand our sales force and invest in significant marketing efforts.

Revenues

Revenues for the period were $1.98 million, a 74% increase, compared to $1.14 million for the same period in 2011. These results were due to expansion of sales and marketing efforts versus third quarter 2011 and focused on the development of new accounts as well as penetration into key accounts.

Revenues decreased 1.5% compared to second quarter 2012 revenues of $2.01 million. This is the second year in which the third quarter has been relatively flat compared to the second quarter. While this may suggest seasonality in peripheral nerve surgery, it is important to note that in both of these quarters there were material corporate transactions that may have distracted operations. In addition, during the period, the Company made personnel changes in certain sales territories, but did not increase the size of its direct sales force.

Gross Profit

Gross profit for the period increased to $1.44 million from the reported third quarter 2011 results of $10,000. The favorable results reflect increased revenues and lower manufacturing cost in 2012 and exclude an inventory write-off of $0.83, which occurred during the third quarter 2011.

The gross profit margin for the period increased to 73% compared to 0.9% for the same quarter last year.
