Is the wealth of information about your individual health risks worth the anxiety of knowing?

DNA testing kits have made it possible to access previously unmined information about your health. As a huge advocate of preventative medicine, Ive explored the pros and cons of accessing this wealth of information to see whether your spit is worth the price tag and the consequences.

Firstly, what is it? Companies like 23andMe offer a home-based saliva collection kit you spit in the tube and send it to the lab. From there, your DNA is extracted from the spit and a process called genotyping analyses the DNA.

You then receive a report with your health predispositions (diseases you are more likely to get due to your genes) and your carrier status of certain diseases, such as cystic fibrosis.

The most obvious benefit of getting your DNA tested is identifying your personal health predispositions. For instance, the report might indicate youre at risk of getting type 2 diabetes, or heart disease. With this information, you can make changes to your lifestyle to help prevent these diseases from occurring, such as quitting smoking, drinking less caffeine or eating less sugar.

Despite these benefits, it is important to consider the emotional stress of receiving unfortunate results. Finding out you are at high risk of Alzheimers has a huge emotional impact on an individual and their family, especially as there is little you can do to prevent it.

Personally, I wouldnt want to know Im at high risk for a disease I cant do anything about I think the anxiety the knowledge would cause wouldnt be worth the information.

Its also important to note that genealogy results arent definitive. For instance, they may identify the gene that can cause high cholesterol, which in turn can increase the risk of heart disease. However, the test doesnt take into account any other personal or environmental factors, such as your diet, exercise and lifestyle. Without input from your own family doctor or a genetic counsellor, the results cannot be taken as gospel.

The uses of genealogy DNA databases extend beyond personal use for health and ancestry information, and this is the part where I begin to question the safety of using these kits. Although companies have rigorous privacy policies, they do still keep your DNA and information in a database in order to identify future clients that may be within your family tree.

This data is vulnerable to hackers, but also to police and immigration officials. The CBSA uses genealogy DNA testing in an immigration setting to ascertain a persons identity, such as the country they originate from.

From the uses we know about, to those yet to be found Im not sure I want my DNA in a database with unknown potential.

There are also important financial implications that accompany genetic testing, such as the fact that some insurance companies now say you must disclose any genetic risk information you are aware of, which can mean higher premiums for health, life and travel insurance.

Having mused over the idea for several weeks, with my mouse hovering over the Add to Cart button more than once, Ive decided genetic testing is not for me, for now. I personally dont think you should need a genetic test to tell you to live a healthier lifestyle to exercise more, eat more greens and get better sleep.

84 Positive COVID-19 Cases Linked to Vancouver Fruit Processor – OPB News

UPDATE: (2:53 p.m. PT) Health officials in Clark County announced Tuesday that 84 people have tested positive for COVID-19 as part of an outbreak at a Vancouver fruit processor, Firestone Pacific Foods.

Sixty-nine employees have tested positive for COVID-19, four of whom arent Clark County residents. Another 15 people identified as close contacts of those cases have also testedpositive.

A total of 165 employees and 83 close contacts have been tested, with additional testing of employees and close contactsexpected.

The outbreak prompted Washington to pause Clark Countys request to move to Washingtons Phase 2 of reopening. It may be the largest non-health care-linked cluster of coronavirus cases in the greater Portland metroarea.

In total, 510 people have tested positive in Clark County and 25 people havedied.

The most recent available data from the Washington Department of Health show 19,265 confirmed coronavirus cases in the state and 1,050 knowndeaths.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 18 new coronavirus cases and one presumptive case in the state Tuesday. The states total number of known positive and presumptive cases is3,967.

Presumptive cases are people who have not tested positive but have COVID-19 symptoms and have had close contact with someone confirmed to be infected with thevirus.

Officials have reported no new coronavirus-related deaths for the second day in arow.

In Oregon, 148 people are known to have died fromCOVID-19.

Due to data reconciliation, one case originally reported as presumptive in Josephine County was determined to not be a case. Two other cases one in the 30-39 age group and one in the 70-79 age group were also determined not to becases.

Durango hatchery takes first spawn from rare cutthroat trout rescued in 416 Fire – Fort Morgan Times

DURANGO, Colo. After nearly a two-year wait, Colorado Parks and Wildlife hatchery staff and biologists in Durango have spawned a new lineage of Colorado River cutthroat trout that were rescued from a remote stream during the 416 Fire in 2018.

This marks a major milestone forCPWs on-going species conservation work in Colorado, and the result of decades of work by dedicated biologists, researchers and field staff.

Fertilized eggs of the San Juan cutthroats will hatch by mid-summer; some of the fingerlings will be placed in back-country streams in the southwest area of the state and others will be held at the Durango hatchery to start a sustainable brood stock. Now, the hatchery staff and biologists will continue the long-term effort to restore these native trout to their home waters.

Im thrilled that weve gotten a spawn from these fish, its been a long process and weve got a lot more work to do, said Jim White, aquatic biologist forCPWin Durango.

The story of these fish that hold a unique genetic marker goes back nearly 150 years and includes some serious biological detective work. Since the 1970s,CPWaquatic biologists have searched back-country streams looking for isolated populations of cutthroats Colorados native trout. In southwest Colorado in the 1980s and 1990s, biologists found cutthroat trout that were suspected to have unique characteristics in eight small streams. Back then, however, technology to analyze genetics fully was still being developed. The biologists kept their eyes on the fish and made sure non-native trout were not stocked nearby.

In 2012, researchers from the University of Colorado went to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History looking for preserved specimens of cutthroat trout that had been collected in Colorado. Two of the specimens they found were taken from the San Juan River near Pagosa Springs in 1874.

An analysis showed that the fish had genetic fingerprints specific to the San Juan River Basin.CPWresearchers then began a similar analysis of the cutthroats theyd found in southwest Colorado. By this time, genetic-analysis technology had advanced and in early 2018 scientists confirmed that the marker in the museum specimens matched the cutthroat trout recently found in the wild.

Biologists and hatchery staff then made a plan to start propagating the fish. The 416 Fire helped push the project along.

When the fire started north of Durango, biologists worried that ash and sediment run-off could kill the cutthroats in the remote streams. SoCPWworked with the San Juan National Forest to go into the area to capture the wild trout and bring them to a special isolation hatchery in Durango. Only 54 cutthroat were recovered from the fire area.

White and Durango Hatchery Manager Toby Mourning have been concerned because the fish did not produce any spawn last year and some of the fish died. But the turnaround this year is a major milestone for the restoration effort.

Were not getting a lot of eggs, but enough to provide some for a limited amount of stocking and some to start a captive population that will be sustainable, Mourning said.

In order to protect the fish,CPWis not providing details on stream locations. Biologists hope, however, that in a few years anglers will be able to find this unique cutthroat trout in the wild.

White explained that the work on this native is a significant conservation effort. In 2018, after the genetics of the fish were confirmed, he said: We always ask ourselves, What if we could go back to the days before mining, pioneer settlement and wide-spread non-native fish stocking to see what we had here? Careful work over the years by biologists, finding those old specimens in the museum and the genetic testing gave us the chance, essentially, to go back in time. Now we have the opportunity to bring this native trout back to southwest Colorado.

Yes, these conditions have been associated with problematic pregnancies and abnormal foetal development. After age 35, older eggs tend to have abnormal cell division where the chromosomes may fail to separate in the correct way, leading to an excess number of expected chromosomes.

For example, in Downs syndrome, the foetus has an extra chromosome resulting in what is referred to as trisomy. Cerebral palsy is associated with complications of advanced parental age, especially the mothers. These may include miscarriages, multiple births, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and genetic mutations that impact brain development. Studies have also suggested that an older couple is more likely to use infertility procedures that can increase the risk of multiples and other risk factors.

I discovered that my fiances sister has albinism. How likely is it that any of our future children develops the condition?

There is a 50 percent chance your fiance is a carrier for the albinism gene. If this holds true, then there is a 25 percent chance that your future children may develop this condition.

Yes, most physical characteristics are easily inherited from parents to their offspring. However, this could be a mixture of traits from both the donor and the recipient.

How far is the world from genetically engineering desirable traits into people and consequently having designer babies?

It is already happening on a smaller scale for certain traits, for example women or men going to sperm banks look for super straights in their donors for IVF procedures.

The world is also moving towards precision medicine, or what is commonly known as personalised medicine where everyone has their medicine tailor-made to suit their genes and condition based on their genetic fingerprint.

With technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, the future of designer babies is possible although ethical considerations in human cloning restrict such practices and may fail to promote advancements in these technologies.

Can I influence my childrens personalities or are they predetermined before birth?

To some extent yes, but personality is influenced by various factors. One component may come from the genes and the other from environmental interactions. For example, exposure to different life circumstances greatly influences ones personality.

My four-year-old twins are very different. My son has a real mean streak. Hes always been like that. His sister is kind. I have been responsible for their upbringing so far. Are character traits in the genes?

The difference could be in their genetic makeup. As we know, we inherit half of our genes from each parent and different personality traits could arise from this. In addition, the contrast in their personality could emanate from their daily interactions with the external world, such as from observations.

As a geneticist, do you think psychopaths are born or made?

I think it is a mixed bag of fortunes here. Psychopaths could result from nature and nurture. Several studies have pointed to the existence of genetic abnormalities in psychopaths, whereas other cases have risen purely from their upbringing. I have read a bit about genetic testing for couples, and I am considering it before we start a family. My question is, if they find something worrying (my sister died of sickle cell anaemia) can it be prevented because we know beforehand?

It may not be prevented in its entirety, but may help in early management of the outcome. It may also help in decision making whether to proceed and have children in the full knowledge that they may develop an inherited condition from parents. For your case, you could be a carrier for sickle cell disease and this prepares you to seek genetic therapy such as stem cell transplants to correct the abnormal red (sickle) cells.

I did the BRCA gene test and I have the mutated gene. What are the chances I could get ovarian or breast cancer?

A mutated BRCA gene is only an indicator of higher risk of developing either ovarian or breast cancer. It does not mean that you already have the cancer. It helps you prepare to seek and make a plan for testing and monitoring of signs of the development of these cancers so that preventative or management measures can be instituted. This may help in following a lifestyle that can reduce the chances of accelerating the development of the disease.

Is there a genetic explanation as to why children, especially firstborns, look like their fathers?

Well, it is not always the case. Physical characteristics of the offspring sometimes might be a mixture of both the mothers and fathers characteristics. There are, however, extremes where a child may look like a copy of either parent. A child is a result of the union of genes of a mother and father, and the strength of expression of these genes may differ.

There is conflicting information out there about genetically modified foods. What are the facts and fiction on this?

Genetically modified foods refer to food items whose source material production, be it plant or animal, involves intentional mixing (manipulation) of genetic material not naturally found in the pure/natural breed.

Tale of bubonic plague in pumas revived by southern Yellowstone study – Sports and Weather Right Now

BILLINGS Before the COVID-19 pandemic, way back in the 1300s there was a pestilence known as the Black Death, also called bubonic plague.

Estimated to have killed millions during several outbreaks, the bubonic plague is caused by a bacteria known as Yersinia pestis.

Although the new coronavirus pandemic has captured headlines and attention around the world over the past two months, bubonic plague has again reared its head, this time in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Recently published research by Mark Elbrock and his associates showed 47% of the 17 cougars that were captured and had their blood drawn in the southern GYE tested positive for exposure to the plague.

This suggests that: (1) Y. pestis may be present at higher levels in the GYE than previously assumed, Elbrock wrote in the Cambridge University Press, noting that the disease was also found in four of 11 mountain lions that were necropsied. His co-authors were Winston Vickers and Howard Quigley.

The study is not the first time that exposure to Y. pestis has been found in Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem cougars. In 2006, a study co-authored by Roman Biek and Toni Ruth, along with others, tested blood from 150 cougars collected over 15 years and found relatively low exposure to the bacteria less than 20%.

Ruth also found Yellowstone cougars in 2004 and 2005 that had succumbed to bubonic plague. When captured in the winter, they were infested with fleas. The animals died in the following summer.

Its a relatively common bacteria found in wildlife, more so in southern drier areas, said Dan Stahler, leader of the Yellowstone National Park Cougar Project.

The bacteria is commonly transmitted by fleas that infest rodents, everything from mice to ground squirrels. The cougars, along with other predators like coyotes, are exposed to the virus when they catch and eat infected animals.

Felines, including bobcats and lynxsee, tend to be more susceptible to Y. pestis than canines, Stahler said. For some reason, bears appear impervious to such infections, he added.

Being aware of contagions is why Stahler and his team approach any dead animal cautiously while conducting wildlife research.

Anyone in contact with animals needs to have such diseases at the forefront of their mind, he said.

Not to be fearful, or to panic, but its important to screen for it and be careful of it, he said.

In humans, bubonic plague causes enlarged lymph nodes in the armpits, groin and neck. It can also be accompanied by fever and muscle aches, along with other flu-like symptoms. Unlike COVID-19, it cant be transmitted from an infected person to others via respiratory droplets. Bubonic plague is also easily treated with a vaccine if caught soon enough.

According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks website, detailed data on the distribution of plague in wildlife in Montana is not available, although it is believed to be present throughout the state. The most recent human case of plague in Montana was in 1992 when a hunter contracted the disease from a bobcat. In 1987, a hunter was infected after skinning an infected antelope.

Across the United States, only about seven people a year are infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More prevalent in the Southwest, the United States saw spikes in human infections in 2006 and 2015, according to the CDC.

Prairie dogs are another species that is often infected by bubonic plague. In trying to reintroduce black-footed ferrets across the West, outbreaks of plague have repeatedly frustrated scientists efforts. Prairie dogs are the main food source for the ferrets, which also use the rodents dens as their living quarters.

The incidence of plague seems to increase in years with cooler summers that follow wet winters, Stahler said, possibly because those conditions are more conducive to flea survival.

Yellowstone National Parks cougar study continued this winter with the capture of seven cougars. Eight of the big cats are wearing GPS collars, allowing researchers to track their movements.

Soon-to-be published research based on a graduate students work on noninvasive genetic testing, like hair samples, is being used to provide insight to the parks cougar population. Stahler said the work shows that in the Northern Range of the park, which includes the Lamar Valley, there are about 35 to 45 cougars, a robust population.

The research team also continues to collect data via remote camera traps, which also will help with population estimates of the secretive animals. At one elk calf carcass, five lions were photographed feeding over several days.

We had one cool trigger where a mule deer went racing by and was then followed by a cougar, Stahler said.

Another series showed a whitetail deer racing past a camera near Hellroaring Creek, soon followed by a wolf. The wolf later walked back past the camera.

Unfortunately, the parks winter predator study was cut short in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stahler said. Yellowstone National Park was closed to the public on March 23.

In the big leagues hes known as a dependable reliever.

Once a star pitcher at Wright State and now a stalwart of the Houston Astros bullpen, Joe Smith is awaiting the start of his 14th Major League Baseball season.

Hes appeared in 782 games and is known for his unique delivery, a cross between sidearm and submarine style.

But its his pitch off the mound even more so than on it thats especially impactful.

Were just trying to bring some good into the world, he told me the other day when discussing one of his charitable involvements.

Smith and his wife Allie LaForce the former Miss Teen USA, an Ohio University basketball player and journalism grad and now a TNT sideline reporter known for her coverage of the NBA and college basketball March Madness are the highest profile sports couple in the Miami Valley.

They live in Bellbrook in the offseason, though their careers have them travelling around the country much of the year.

At present theyre ensconced in West Palm Beach. Smith went to Florida for spring training and was joined by Allie when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the sports world over two months ago.

Since then they have been doing some real relief work.

With the help of the Athletes and Causes, the nonprofit organization that runs their charitable ventures, they became the driving force of the Project FRONTLINE effort that has delivered over 15,000 meals from restaurants struggling through the coronavirus closures to over-taxed doctors, nurses and hospital staff.

Were just trying to say a little thank you to those people who are making sacrifices and risking their lives for the rest of us, Smith said. At the same time were getting local restaurants involved and giving them some revenue so hopefully they can pay some employees and keep their doors open.

While the couple made a considerable monetary commitment to the venture, they also got support from other pro athletes and celebrities people like fellow Astro Josh Reddick, former big leaguer Johnny Damon, Cleveland Cavalier Kevin Love, Portland Trailblazer CJ McCollum, Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona, celebrity chef Michael Symon and others as well many everyday people.

Theyve helped hospitals in six states and especially in and around Houston and Cleveland, where Joe had two pitching stints and where Allie, who grew up some 40 miles away in Vermilion, once worked as a sports anchor and reporter at Fox affiliate, WJW Channel 8.

Their effort caught the imagination of many and spun off in some unlikely directions.

A woman from Oberlin called and said, I dont have a restaurant, but I have 1,000 orchid plants Id like to donate. Do you think nurses would want one? Allie said.

We had them shipped to our (Athletes and Causes) headquarters in Tampa and they gave them out. And we heard stories how some nurses were in tears knowing someone cared about them.

While immersed in this project, theyve continued work with their signature HelpCureHD Foundation.

The HD is for Huntingtons Disease, the congenital disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain and erodes mental capacity and physical capability.

There is no cure and it is usually fatal.

Joes grandmother died from HD complications in 2006 and his mother, Lee, a former elementary school teacher in her early 60s, was diagnosed with it eight years ago and for the past 2 years has lived in an Alzheimers facility near Cincinnati.

Theres a 50 percent chance that Joe and his sister Megan could inherit the disease.

When he and Allie began the foundation, the goal was to raise awareness and provide financial backing for research. In recent years the focus has switched to helping families attempt costly in vitro fertilization with genetic testing that would help them end up with HD-free embryos to be implanted.

That not only would guarantee an HD-free child, but it would stop the devastating disease from continuing its generational chain.

They had planned to do the process themselves in April, but precautions against COVID-19 prevented those medical procedures. Thats made it especially tough this month since May is Huntingtons Disease Awareness Month.

They want to help families because the costs are steep. Smith said they already have spent $47,000 in their own attempt and it can be $8,000 with every doctors visit.

Were lucky because I play baseball, but few families can afford that, he said. And a lot of its not covered by insurance. Itd be emotionally devastating to know you couldnt help your child or future generations just because of finances.

He said HD is like a combination of Alzheimers, Parkinsons and ALS:

Its the Devils Disease.

A true love story

And yet something quite angelic has been happening, Allie said:

Joes dad cant get in to see Joes mom, so he sits outside of her window every single day just so she can see him. Hes an incredible man and its a true love story.

Joes mom really isnt talking anymore, but she gets up and sees him out there and they have lunch together.

Although she said Joes mom is losing her memory and motor skills, she likes those visits. Nurses will hold a phone up to her ear and Mike, her husband of 39 years, talks to her.

She always been her sons biggest fan and over the past couple of years the family has taped his night games and played them for her the next day.

That makes these days without baseball especially tough for her.

Allie said there were times when his moms condition first began to worsen that Joe struggled with being away from her to play baseball:

He got to a point where he was questioning: Why am I playing the game? He wasnt feeling any fulfillment at the core of himself.

But then when he found that our foundation could help families get HD-free babies and change a familys future, he realized the platform and the financial capabilities he had with baseball. He started to feel a new fulfillment. That made the game worth it again.

Smith said he knows some peoples beliefs dont allow them to go along with this and thats fine But for me, this is a chance to get rid of a terrible disease.

Youre not changing eye color or height or anything else about the human being. Youre just knocking the Huntingtons gene out.

They had 24 families in their program when the pandemic put everything on hold. But recently they got word that two families one in Ohio, one in Houston have HD-free pregnancies.

That was a really rewarding moment, Smith said. Thats what were trying to do here. Were just trying to bring some good into the world.

Giving back

With their round-the-calendar careers she covering basketball and football, he playing baseball Allie said these have been the first weekends theyve had off together since they married in 2015.

While she said it was awesome for their relationship, they were even more intent on looking out for others.

I think it has to do with both of our upbringings, she said. In my hometown, my parents would run steak fries to raise money if somebody in our high school or community was in need. I can remember working at them growing up.

And when I was Miss Teen USA, I was like 16 and went all over the country raising over $100 million for different charities.

Smith continues to embrace the Wright State program which he joined as a walk-on out of Amelia High School near Cincinnati. He became the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year and in 2006 was a third-round draft pick of the New York Mets.

His career took him to Cleveland, the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, Toronto, back to Cleveland and in December of 2017 he signed with the Astros. He suffered a ruptured Achilles in a workout the following December and pitched just 25 innings in the latter part of last season, but still had a 1.80 era.

This past December, three months shy of 36, he re-signed for $8 million over two years.

He said he was impressed with the Astros from the start:

When I walked into that clubhouse in 2018, it was unbelievable. Everybody was looking for ways to give back to the community. A lot of it had to do with the way (Hurricane) Harvey hit the city (in 2017.) They understood what people were going through and tried to help anyway they could.

Now Project FRONTLINE which sent hundreds of meals to places like the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital and Texas Childrens Hospital is continuing that communal embrace.

Back to baseball?

As restrictions are being eased across the nation, preliminary talks have begun about baseballs return this season. Last week Major League Baseball presented a 67-page proposal to the Players Association that addressed some issues.

Its going to be different, but the feeling I get from everybody (players and management) is that they all want to get back on the field and start playing, Smith said. But there are so many questions to be answered:

Whats spring training going to look like? And the regular season? Where will teams play? What will travel be like? And then theres the economic issues.

And one thing cant be overlooked here. It takes a lot more than 25 young guys running around to play baseball.

We have four coaches who are 70 years old and technically in that high-risk category. There are trainers, front office people and so many others in that group, too. We need to keep them safe.

And weve got guys in our league who are literally taking care of their families. Some have 10 people living with them. Some have their parents living with them. God forbid, you bring the virus home because one of your teammates was careless.

But on the flip side, theres also a woman in her early 60s for whom hed certainly like to be back on the field.

For all her physical struggles and cognitive issues, his mom knows exactly what hes doing, Allie said:

She knows if he had a good game or a bad one. She knows how many batters he faced. How many strikeouts he got. She loves her son so much. She knows just what hes doing.

She knows his pitch.

She knows, in so many ways, he and his wife Allie are just trying to bring some good into the world.

With the trucking, towing and manufacturing industry employing more than 5 million women and a growth rate of 22 percent annually, she decided it was time for clothing that women in those industries would want to wear.

I started my company, because I was a woman in the towing and trucking industry and found that wherever I searched, there was nothing that fit me, Gaglione said. There are no small sizes and everything was made in one size.

The existing market for safety wear is mostly for men and does not provide materials or fits that most women would find comfortable. A poor fit can cause women to face a higher risk of injury or death think baggy clothing caught in machinery which can also increase insurance risks.

In 2017 alone, Gaglione said, there were 250,000 accidents due to ill-fitting safety wear. Gaglione said she knows of some companies that sell pink safety wear, but much of it doesnt comply with the American National Standards Institute, which establishes various safety standards.

She not only made her clothing compliant with ANSI, but comfortable. All her garments are inspired by typical yoga pants, as she got her start by simply sewing on reflective gear to her yoga pants and leggings. She eventually made her own designs for women of all sizes.

Every time we come out of a downturn, the investment in technology actually speeds up rather than slows down, said Brinkman. The companies that are going to come out of this stronger are the ones that are already making plans and looking for new opportunities for their businesses to take advantage of as the economy recovers.

Brinkman is looking forward to coming away with two or three ideas to put to use as well as two or three things that push him to think harder about what hes doing.

I just think this is an exciting time for us, I think its going to be an opportunity for all of us to show what Wisconsin can do, both in terms of our ability to open responsibility but then also to take advantage of the new opportunities that are coming along in this new economy, he said.

The states unemployment rate soared to 14.1 percent in April, reaching a level not seen since the Great Depression.

According to a release from the state Department of Workforce Development, Wisconsins unemployment rate in April was 0.6 percent lower than the national rate of 14.7 percent.

The massive increase comes after the state was experiencing near-record low unemployment rates, with 3.1 percent in early March. More than 385,000 private-sector jobs were lost over the course of a single month, according to DWD.

The economy has taken a pretty severe hit in a very rapid manner, said DWD Chief Economist Dennis Winters in a media briefing today.

He explained the states unemployment rate approached 10 percent in the Great Recession of 2008, just under the national rate at the time. Winters also said the state didnt see current levels in a previous recession in the early 1980s.

The closest is the Great Depression when they figured the unemployment rate was around 25 percent, he said, adding that the depression of the 1930s built up over the course of months and years. This is a totally different phenomenon.

In early April, DWD had projected the states unemployment rate could reach as high as 27 percent. But based on the most recent information, Winters said the odds of that are less than 50 percent at this point.

Since the unemployment statistics are delayed by several weeks, Winters said they likely wont reflect the impact of the stay-at-home order and business restrictions being lifted until early July.

After peaking in early April, the number of initial unemployment applications in Wisconsin has since leveled off, according to the DWD website. But the daily totals are still in the thousands, and much higher than the same time last year. Between March 15 and May 16, DWD received 549,147 initial unemployment applications.

Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce President & CEO Kurt Bauer said a prolonged shutdown due to COVID-19 would likely be a much greater threat to the state than the virus itself.

Now is the time to return to the policies that delivered the strongest economy, lowest unemployment and largest budget reserves in Wisconsin history, he said. Wisconsin must reduce taxes, cut job-strangling red tape, and enact liability reforms that protect employers from costly and frivolous lawsuits.

Gov. Tony Evers says the state will dedicate $100 million from the federal CARES Act to help long-term care providers, emergency medical services, and home and community-based services.

The money is the latest chunk of the federal funding that Evers has rolled out to help various industries impacted by COVID-19. Hes now announced plans for more than $1.4 billion of the nearly $1.9 billion sent to the state.

The $100 million will be doled out in two parts. The initial phase will support immediate needs with a second release the administration says will be more targeted to additional needs of providers. In both cases, the money will support expenses directly related to COVID-19 and unexpected costs such as overtime and changes to sanitation procedures.

On a call with reporters today, Evers said the state will use how much Medicaid funding applicants receive as a basis to help divvy up the $100 million.

Evers acknowledged needs outstrip the amount of money being made available, noting he had earlier called for state money to help the facilities. But Republican lawmakers rejected his legislation that included the money.

Certainly, we will look at it, Evers said of additional state funding. But we also want to use as many resources as possible from the federal government.

Earlier today, Assembly Minority Leader Jim Steineke, R-Kaukauha, chided Evers in a letter for not providing money to long-term care facilities.

Following the announcement, Steineke said the money was better than nothing. Steineke added he heard frustrations from those in the long-term care industry that they hadnt been consulted by Evers and said providing state money isnt an option because Wisconsin is fundamentally broke.

While its a significant amount of money, in the long run its going to fall well short of what the needs are, Steineke said.

A professor in the UW-Madison Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, David OConnor, is working to develop a COVID-19 test to be used in institutions such as nursing homes or large workplaces.

OConnor was a panelist in the Wisconsin Alumni and Research Foundations third COVID-19 edition of its event series Crossroads of Ideas titled Where do we go from here?

He is anticipating federal guidelines are going to change on patients needing to be symptomatic for a test, as his lab is aiming for this test to be used for pre-symptomatic people.

He is working with Profs. Dave Beebe and Tom Friedrich to develop a colorimetric test for the virus, SARS-CoV-2 that causes the disease, COVID-19. OConnor said that one of the testing limitations right now is that it needs to take place in centralized labs with fancy equipment. But in this rapid test, a swab sample that has the viruss nucleic acid or RNA would cause the material in a tube to turn yellow; if not, pink.

We imagine that a truly rapid test would need to be deployed to nursing homes, said OConnor, noting that there are 15,000 nursing homes in the nation. You can imagine having a device that can be deployed at nursing homes, at any nursing home that has ongoing cases, it could be, having their people tested every day.

Deployment of the test would depend on a pending grant with RADx, a government program thats designed to accelerate the development and deployment of tests like this, according to OConnor.

If it gets funded, RADx will do rapid development over about a four-week period to see if it would be feasible for commercialization on a scale of millions of tests per week. If so, they aim to have it available by the end of the summer highly ambitious, especially from where we are now, he said.

Looking ahead, OConnor doesnt know how COVID-19 will behave in the winter.

A lot of people who believe they were infected last winter, were infected with something else, possibly influenza B, possibly something else, he said adding that probably only 1 percent of people in Dane County had it last winter, and they would have been classified at a higher than average risk level.

With most people having not been infected, certainly around here, its going to be an open question what happens next winter.

Also in OConnors Laboratory, investigators lead CoVen, an international collaboration developing COVID-19 animal models to test vaccines and treatments. The group has also been responsible for sequencing SARS-CoV-2 genomes from cases throughout Dane and Milwaukee Counties to understand how these viruses are moving through Wisconsin.

Gentueri Inc. contributes 55,000 COVID-19 testing kits a week to the states lab capacity and is developing new testing kits that can be used in the workplace.

Gentueris main business is working with laboratories to improve result quality and lab efficiency by advancing collection, preservation and processing of biological samples with kits. They make sexual assault kits for the Wisconsin Crime Lab, collection kits and genetic testing kits.

In mid-March, after predicting a slowdown in business, Nagy decided to expand Gentueri from four employees to 25 and pivoted to produce COVID-19 testing kits that include the nasal swabs and Viral Transport Media material that keeps the virus alive in the sample for the lab for local laboratories.

We realized that there was a shortage of the kits out there, and the fact that were a biological sample collection company we figured we have the expertise to make these, said Randy Nagy, president and CEO of Gentueri.

After a call to the state hygiene laboratory, company officials sourced the materials they would need for the kits, purchased a machine to make the kits and started producing the kits. Theyve since expanded to help other states in need: Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Nebraska, Michigan and Kansas.

According to Nagy, what employers are looking for now is a way to test their employees to make them feel safe. With expertise in sample collection, Gentueri is developing a CollectEject Swab Kit that uses an oral sample rather than the long thin swab taken high up in the nasal cavity.

This allows an individual to easily collect a sample themselves and send it to a lab for automated processing, said Nagy.

We see a big opportunity there and that will go until there is a vaccine available, he said. This pivot has given us exposure to the genetic testing world. We can help the community and the laboratories with their immediate problem. Were not only doing it ourselves, but helping other companies in the end to provide their services as well.

DHS is conducting 376 facility-wide investigations across the state, 77 more than last week.

Long-term care facilities account for 165 of them, followed closely by 148 non-health care workplace investigations.

Long-term care facilities in the state are reporting 205 deaths due to COVID-19, making up 42 percent of total deaths in Wisconsin due to the virus.

These include nursing homes and assisted living facilities, such as community-based residential facilities and residential care apartment complexes.

Thirty-two of the investigations are in group housing facilities including correctional facilities, homeless shelters, dormitories and group homes that have identified 21 COVID-19 deaths, or 4 percent of the states total.

One hundred and twenty-nine of the states COVID-19 deaths were not linked to group housing facilities, but 132 deaths are categorized as unknown, meaning they may or may not have occurred at these facilities.

According to DHS, the unknown category exists because relevant information has only been collected since April 8.

About 18 percent of confirmed COVID-19 patients who have died in the state were over 90 years old, while another 24 percent were between 80 and 89 years old. Another 28 percent were between 70 and 79, and 16 percent were between 60 and 69.

DHS is also conducting investigations in healthcare facilities (17) and other settings (14).

A majority of the investigations are taking place in Milwaukee (69) and Brown (60) counties.

All 72 counties in Wisconsin have at least one confirmed case of COVID-19 after Langlade and Taylor counties had a case overnight.

DHS reports the states COVID-19 death toll at 487 up six from the last count.

The states number of confirmed cases also rose since the previous count by 472 bringing the cumulative case count to 13,885. The positive tests results account for 5 percent of the total tests received Thursday, which is a good percentage, DHS Secretary Andrea Palm said in a briefing.

An estimated 58 percent have recovered from COVID-19, while 4 percent of patients have died. Thirty-nine percent are still in a 30-day waiting period of symptom onset or diagnosis.

Counties reporting deaths include: Milwaukee (269), Brown (29), Dane (26), Waukesha (24), Kenosha (21), Racine (20), Rock (14), Ozaukee (11), Walworth (11), Grant (10), Outagamie (5), Clark (4), Fond du Lac (4), Richland (4) and Washington (4).

Door, Richland, Sauk and Sheboygan counties report three deaths each. Jefferson and Marinette counties report two deaths each.

Adams, Bayfield, Buffalo, Burnett, Calumet, Columbia, Dodge, Iron, Jackson, Juneau, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marathon, Marquette, Monroe, Polk, Waupaca and Winnebago counties report one death each.

Hospitalizations in the state are up.

Of the states 13,885 confirmed cases, 16 percent have been hospitalized and 4 percent have received intensive care, according to DHS.

And the Wisconsin Hospital Associations hospital dashboard reports 398 COVID patients in hospitals statewide, up five patients from Wednesday and 46 more than a week ago. WHAs statewide patient data shows an upward trend in hospitalized patients since May 6.

DHS Secretary Andrea Palm said its safe to say the uptick in hospitalizations right now is not a result of the end of the states stay-at-home order.

This is because hospitalization lag time is longer than the testing lag time and hospitalization isnt required until a patient has been infected for a while and symptoms get bad, usually three to five weeks post infection, according to Palm.

DHS reports that 292 of the total COVID patients are in southeastern Wisconsin, which has also seen an increase in hospitalizations since May 6.

It is why we have built and worked on this surge capacity, not only at the regional level with hospital systems across the state, but also through our alternative care facility in Milwaukee and the one that we have started here in Dane that we would be able stand up quickly if we needed to, Palm said.

The state is slowly moving up to reach its capacity of 14,140 tests per day after a total of 9,365 came back Thursday, the most of any day.

As White House officials reportedly pressure the CDC to raise the bar for how states count COVID-19 deaths, the state Department of Health Services says its only including cases that had a positive test and for which the virus caused the patient to die.

If they tested positive for COVID-19 by a confirmatory test (for example, a PCR test that detects the virus causing COVID-19, not an antibody test), and COVID-19 is listed among the primary causes of death or among contributing causes of death, they are counted as a COVID-19-associated death, said Elizabeth Goodsitt, a spokesperson for DHS.

According to a report from the Daily Beast, members of the presidents coronavirus task force have been seeking changes to the tallying process that would likely lead to fewer deaths being reported. The report cites five unnamed CDC officials and says President Trump has used hypotheticals in which someone who has the virus dies from an unrelated cause such as falling down the stairs, and is still counted as a COVID-19 death.

Other states are using varying methods to calculate the total death toll attributed to the virus, a report from the Washington Post shows. But in Wisconsin, health officials only count it as a COVID-19 death if the disease is listed among the primary causes of death or contributing causes of death.

Goodsitt said if health officials have reason to believe a death wasnt linked to COVID-19 at all, based on the assessment of a medical provider or medical examiner, then its not counted in the states tally of virus deaths.

For example, if a patient died from an overdose or a car accident, and they were not ill, or there was evidence that their illness did not contribute to their death, they are not counted as a COVID-19-associated death, even if COVID-19 is detected, Goodsitt said in an email.

The first thing Wilkinson talked about was the importance of doing your research. Gather information from both your and your partners relatives to learn about your familys health history.

Also, she said to track your menstrual cycles if youre not already doing so. Also consider taking an ovulation test or fertility test if theyve been irregular.

Wilkinson said you should also be gathering your medical records into one location, especially if youre been seeing different physicians in the last five years. Contact their offices to obtain your medical records. If not, make a list of any health events or significant medical activities. Its also a good way to be sure youre up to date on vaccines.

Lastly Wilkinson said that genetic testing is incredibly important for everyone to have. Parents may have genetic conditions that can be passed onto unborn children. Leading health organizations recommend carrier screening be offered to all women who are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. Tests kits are available online and can be done right at home.

That way you can do everything you need to do to prepare for that next appointment, she added.

Could a patent get in between you and a Covid-19 test? Yes – The Guardian

Imagine if one company held a patent covering all methods of testing for Covid-19 antibodies. The company could charge monopoly prices for its tests and prohibit competitors including non-profit and university labs from manufacturing or administering their own. If the company made itself the countrys sole supplier, it would struggle to meet demand. The company would profit, but Americans would face waiting lists, confusion and inequitable access and the virus would keep spreading.

Would a patent holder ever exploit an outbreak of life-threatening infectious disease in this way? Yes. In 2001, the United States faced a credible threat of an anthrax outbreak, yet Bayer refused to license its patents on ciprofloxacin (Cipro), the most effective antibiotic treatment for anthrax, to competitors, even as Bayer itself struggled to supply the nations antibiotic stockpile.

It may seem outlandish to imagine one patent creating a wide-ranging monopoly on diagnostic testing, but it happened. In the 1990s and 2000s, biotech companies obtained and enforced broad patents on medical diagnostics that gave them near-total control of testing for particular conditions. One company obtained patents on methods of diagnosing people at high risk of developing breast cancer and attempted to eliminate testing at competing laboratories by sending cease-and-desist letters; another became the sole provider of genetic testing for many neurological and endocrine conditions, including muscular dystrophy and Alzheimers disease.

By 2011, the American Medical Association submitted an alarmed amicus brief to the US supreme court, lamenting that [i]t is hard to imagine how the clinical diagnostic community will continue to provide quality patient care and how physicians will continue to practice medicine in an ethical and effective manner under a patent regime that permits broad patents on the bodys natural responses to illness and medical treatment.

The supreme court listened. Between 2012 and 2014, in a trio of important cases Mayo, Myriad and Alice it confirmed that if a patent is directed to an abstract idea, natural phenomenon or natural law, it must claim something new and attributable to the inventor an inventive concept to become eligible for patent protection. A patent cant broadly claim a fundamental building block of knowledge like the human bodys antibodies to Covid-19 and tack on ubiquitous, conventional technology like using a needle to draw a blood sample containing those antibodies. These supreme court decisions helped restore patent laws traditional balance between inventors incentives and public access to technology.

The United Statess innovation economy has grown under Mayo, Myriad and Alice, with benefits to healthcare and not just diagnostic testing. For example, in 2013, Justus Decher developed a telehealth product that enables patients to consult with doctors remotely. A few years later, Decher was accused of infringing an older patent so broad it covered the basic idea of remotely consulting patients even by telephone. Fortunately, a court invalidated the patent under the supreme courts Mayo and Alice precedents. Dechers and other telehealth technologies have provided an important lifeline in the Covid-19 pandemic.

Freed from overbroad patents on fundamental knowledge, we see an explosion of efforts to build and disseminate new tools to fight Covid-19, including 3-D printed and open source masks and ventilators and clinical trials on dozens of potential treatments and vaccines. While the US lags on deploying diagnostic testing, inventors are busily inventing: the FDA has authorized dozens of different Covid-19 tests. Some inventors may be motivated by the patent incentive companies can still get patents, just within limits. But much is driven by altruism, love of science and the reputation that comes from inventing something that saves millions of lives. Today, no one company monopolizes Covid-19 testing, and all benefit.

Yet some patent holders and their allies are unwisely threatening this balance. Last year, with support from the largest pharmaceutical and biotech industry trade groups, Senators Chris Coons and Thom Tillis proposed a bill that would undo Mayo, Myriad, and Alice, expanding limits on patent eligibility. Pro-patent voices are now using the Covid-19 crisis to push the Coons-Tillis bill, asserting that broad patents on now-patent-ineligible subject matter are necessary to incentivize invention of anti-Covid technologies, especially diagnostic tests. That ignores evidence that the biggest problems we face are global shortages of unpatented basic supplies like nasal swabs and a failure of federal government coordination, not a shortage of inventive activity.

Congress should reject these efforts to undo the traditional balance and expand the scope of patent eligibility. The current legal standard may not be perfect, but it is working. In the Covid-19 crisis, Congress should focus instead on policies that give healthcare workers, other essential workers, patients, and all Americans the resources they need.
