May 2007 Cancer patients are traveling to China hoping that controversial gene therapy Gendicine may prove a miracle cure. But western scientists are very reluctant to back the therapy which remains available only in China.

Expanding earlier research, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine cardiologists have begun a pilot study using adult stem cells to repair heart function in Doberman Pinschers with a common heart condition. Researchers hope to build on their results to further explore the technique in other breeds of dogs

Researchers have completed the study by using skin biopsies from patients with the rare genetic disease Friedreich Ataxia (FA). The discovery will allow for the development of new treatments for FA and related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease

http://www.bbc.co.uk Bang Goes the Theory's Liz Bonnin recently used mitochondrial DNA to trace her ancestry right back to the earliest humans. It's a subject co-presenter Dr Yan Wong knows plenty about, and a great excuse for him to meet up with his old tutor Prof Richard Dawkins. The pair collaborated on a book, The Ancestor's Tale, and here they chat about one of its main themes: how lineages of different genes can reveal surprisingly different histories.
